MBB Game 3 vs Bucknell - 11/13/2019 7pm
Re: MBB Game 3 vs Bucknell - 11/13/2019 7pm
I heard it pronounced Shoot-uh. I have a co-worker with that last name.
Hughes redshirted last season. If he's not good enough this season, it's a waste of a scholarship. Given how much we rely on guards, I doubt Hughes will play much if Kante, Schutte, and Trueheart are available. The eight players who have played at least 11 minutes and Trueheart makes nine, and the tenth most minutes at the end of the season could be negligible. In our first eight seasons in the CAA, our tenth most minutes was over 100 every season except for 2006-2007. In our ten seasons after that, our tenth most minutes was only over 100 twice. In 2017-2018, Matija Radovic was tenth with 261. In 2012-2013, Shaquille Stokes was tenth with 198, and thirteen players including the four thieves played at least 116 minutes.

Edit: Bucknell has more players with at least 1,000 points, 43 to 37, but their leading scorer is Mike Muscala with 2,036, and Hofstra has 7 players with more than that. Pemberton is 12 points behind Leroy Allen and 14 points Frank Walker. If he passes both of them, he will end tonight 11th in career points. Buie is 14 assists behind seventh place Stokes, who had 377. Passing Stokes would rank Buie third among Hofstra players in the CAA behind Jenkins, who had 489, and Green, who had 463. In two seasons, Green had over two-thirds of Claxton's record of 660. Green had 773 career assists.

I had already stated this about Hughes Evan in one of my prior posts and I'm glad I'm not the only one perturbed and confused as to what his status is on this team. I thought he looked lost when he was on the court at the scrimmage at Hofstra. Someone said he was coming off an injury to his eye or something like that. It's a waste of a scholarship that we could have used to get us a player in the post that this team desperately needs because of our lack of size.EvanJ wrote:I heard it pronounced Shoot-uh. Vision issues can be serious. Some players may get worse from high school to college for basketball reasons, but health or other off-the-court problems that coaches can't be expected to identify could hurt performance in basketball, classes, or anything else. We averaged 33.4 rebounds last season and allowed 33.0. This distribution would produce 28.7, so we have to hope for more. If we hardly use the bench and Ray and Buie combine for 4 to 6 rebounds, we'll be very reliant on our top three rebounders.
Kante: 7.0 (guess)
Coburn: 5.0 (increase from 4.0 last season because he'll get more playing time)
Pemberton: 4.8 (same as last season)
Ray: 3.0 (increase from 2.2 last season because he'll get more playing time)
Buie: 2.7 (same as last season)
Trueheart: 2.2 (same as last season)
Schutte: 2.0 (about the same amount per minute as Dwyer last season)
Others: 2.0
Edit: Here are predicted margins that all expect us to lose:
Sagarin and its components: 2.57, 2.93, 0.84, 5.19
KenPom: 2.78 (using 3.13 for home court that the Sagarin uses)
Vegas Insider line: 2.5 (ESPN doesn't have a line)
Kante: 7.0 (guess)
Coburn: 5.0 (increase from 4.0 last season because he'll get more playing time)

I agree with you FD; and have a similar scout report for KS as I would - I give this kid credit because he certainly looks (both physically and skill level) better then he did last years. I think he is capable of giving us minutes. I am pleasantly surprised.Flying Dutchmen wrote:He’s been better than I thought, not a bad athlete. Kind of similar to Sabety but not as aggressive, with a little more defensive touch. I think we should have sets with Schutte at the 5 and Kante at 4.
However - as of now I'd think his name is pronounced "Kevin CAN"T SHOOT-yet" - but I believe that his stroke from the line is better then some of the other bigs we have and I hope that is continued improvement gives us a solid sub this year (and the next two).
My vote is I like the little I have seen of KS.

http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2019 ... knell.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Bucknell" that is short because he is working on something else. He has KenPom predicts Bucknell to win 78-75.
We are starting the same starters. Bucknell is starting Paul Newman (center), Andrew Funk (guard), Bruce Moore (forward), Ben Robertson (forward), and Jimmy Sotos (guard). It's a team starting four guards against a team starting two guards. https://bucknellbison.com/sports/mens-b ... /2019-2020 has Bucknell's statistics, and they are starting the same starters. Their scoring leader is a bench player, John Meeks, who averages 17.5 points and 26.0 minutes. He's played more minutes than Newman and Robertson.
Edit: The video at https://watchstadium.com/live/hofstra-at-bucknell/ hasn't started and https://bucknellbison.com/watch/?Live=72&type=Live has audio.
Edit Again: The video has started playing commercials, but nothing from the game.

I've noticed on my feed that when it is full screen it's been pausing but when I keep it normal size it seems to be fine. Anybody have any idea what happened with Schutte there? Had a wide open basket and it looked like he hurled the ball 15 feet in the air.

Basically yeah. Not quite Shoot on that first syllable, but very close...EvanJ wrote:I heard it pronounced Shoot-uh.

We went down 10 to down 3 to calling timeout down 25-15. Pemberton missed two free throws by shooting too long, and he hasn't scored.
Edit: We're down 25-18. Bucknell has more rebounds, 22 to 9. The good news is that they have more turnovers, 9 to 1. Bucknell has at least two travelings and at least one offensive foul.

Can only go up from here. They look like 5 guys running up and down the court with no idea. I'm afraid Silverio will be a chucker, guy just catches and heaves too much. Pemba could not be playing worse. Only guy with any life so far is Schutte.
To be fair Bucknell has not played well either. So many turnovers.

Awful Pemberton can’t buy a basket. No rebounds the only one who is scoring is Jalen. Looks like Joe emptying the bench had Butgesd, Hughes and Miranda in a one point. Also putrid from the FT Line. No boxing out disgusting

Down 6 at half, 38-32, definitely a sloppy half, the main issue has been rebounding though.

Re: MBB Game 3 vs Bucknell - 11/13/2019 7pm
Yes we r getting killed on the boards they’re getting too many O rebounds and getting second chance points. We could use Trueheart in this game. They don’t protect the ball and have turned it over numerous times. Bucknell that is. We should be winning this game missed 5,6,7 FT??
Re: MBB Game 3 vs Bucknell - 11/13/2019 7pm
That's what happened. We scored 8 in the last 1:31 to halve the deficit and trail 38-32. We've used ten players, who are everyone except Gibson Jr., Trueheart, Cramer, and Klementowicz. Buie is the only double-digit scorer on either team with 12. Coburn is tied with Jimmy Sotos with 9. Coburn has all 3 of our made threes, and he leads us with 4 rebounds. We have only 3 assists, with 2 by Buie and 1 by Pemberton. For Bucknell, Paul Newman has 6 points on 3-4 shooting and 8 rebounds. Kahliel Spear has 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. It's really hard to have all of those in a half. Nobody has 3 fouls, but six players have 2, with Kante, Schutte, and four Bucknell players. Kante committed his second foul with 10:51 left, and Schutte committed his second foul 28 seconds later, which got Hughes in with 8:52 left. Coburn has 2 blocks and Schutte and Hughes have 1. Bucknell has double the rebounds, 32 to 16, and we would be winning if you took out second chance points, which are 10 to 2. Bucknell has more turnovers, 11 to 2, but our points off turnovers advantage is only 6 to 2. Buie has 3 of our 6 steals.Hof_Judge99 wrote: Can only go up from here.
Edit: I typed that at halftime. We went up 39-38, and Bucknell leads 40-39.
Edit: Coburn made a three to go up 44-40. It was farther behind the line, but I thought it would go in and it did. We're on a 20-4 run. Pemberton made a 3 with 19:11 for his first points.
Edit: Bucknell leads 54-52. They made 4 of 8 threes so far this half, which accounts for 12 of their 16 second half points. Jimmy Sotos has 17 points, with 8 in the second half. Buie and Coburn have 14.
Edit: We called timeout down 65-55 after a Pemberton turnover. Bucknell is on a 25-11 run.
Edit: Pemberton scored 2, and Bucknell made their fourth consecutive three (meaning no missed threes in between, they did attempt twos in between) to go up 68-57, which is 1 short of their largest lead. There's 7:33 left.

Of course the defense is bad but man Bucknell CANNOT miss a 3. The Harlem Globetrotters couldn't do this.

Joe's defense was basically hoping they would miss open 3's. They got one with ease each time down the court.Hof_Judge99 wrote:Of course the defense is bad but man Bucknell CANNOT miss a 3. The Harlem Globetrotters couldn't do this.

They lost 86-71 to a team who was averaging 65.5 points. Bucknell made 15 of 28 threes including 11 of 16 in the second half. It was the first time we allowed a team to make at least 15 threes and make more than half of their attempts since a 97-81 loss at UMass on December 20, 2008, which was 355 games ago. Buie scored 19, with 11 of them being free throws. He had a career-high 11 made, a career-high 14 attempted, and his 3 misses tied his career-high from when he made 1 of 4 in a 77-61 win at James Madison on February 22, 2018. He had 3 assists, 3 steals, and 3 turnovers for a bad assist/turnover. Coburn scored 14. He made 4 of 6 threes and missed all 4 twos. He led us with 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Ray scored 12. He was tied for second on us with 6 rebounds, led us with 4 steals, and even blocked a shot. He tied his career-high in steals previously done in a 90-84 win hosting William & Mary on February 15, 2018. Pemberton had 10 points by shooting field goals 4-12, threes 1-5, and free throws 1-4. He had 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Those were our four double-digit scorers. Half of our other six players scored. Schutte had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 block. Kante had 5 points by shooting field goals 2-3 and free throws 1-3. He had only 2 rebounds. His 18 minutes were 1 more than Schutte. Kante, Schutte, and Hughes combined for 52 minutes, so there must have been. Miranda scored his first 5 career points without missing a shot. After making a two, he banked in a three. I wonder if he's the first Hofstra player to bank in his first three-point attempt, but I remember something unusual happening last season that could have been that, albeit we didn't have any freshmen then. Silverio (12 minutes), Hughes (7 minutes), and Burgess (6 minutes) did not score. Silverio missed 1 three, Hughes didn't shoot, and Burgess shot 0-4 with 1 of them a three. The bench played 46 minutes, and it would have been fewer if not for Kante's foul trouble. We managed to have nobody with more than 3 fouls.
Jimmy Sotos led all scorers with 24. He, Andrew Funk, and Walter Ellis made 4 threes and combined to shoot them 12-20. Funk and Ellis did not make any twos or free throws. Sotos had 3 assists and 3 steals, and Ellis had 3 assists. Paul Newman scored 8, and his 14 rebounds were as much as the next two players on either team combined. Kahliel Spear had 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 blocks in 18 minutes. Ben Robertson only scored 1, but he had 6 rebounds and led all players with 4 assists.
After Bucknell doubled us in rebounds 32 to 16 in the first half, we had 1 more rebound in the second half, 17 to 16. Bucknell had over double the assists, 19 to 9. We had double the second half turnovers, 8 to 4. Bucknell finished with more turnovers, 15 to 10, but more points off turnovers, 10 to 9. Bucknell dominated bench points, 16 to 11. We had small edges in fast break points, 4 to 0, and points in the paint, 32 to 30. Here's the shooting:
Field goals: Hofstra 24/63 = .381, Bucknell 31/67 = .463
Threes: Hofstra 6/19 = .316, Bucknell 15/28 = .536
Free throws: Hofstra 17/27 = .630, Bucknell 9/11 = .818
Jimmy Sotos led all scorers with 24. He, Andrew Funk, and Walter Ellis made 4 threes and combined to shoot them 12-20. Funk and Ellis did not make any twos or free throws. Re: MBB Game 3 vs Bucknell - 11/13/2019 7pm
It gon be a looooooong yr folks.
This staff... good Lord. Recruit like hell, but boy can’t coach worth a poop. Only know how to win with straight talent, and when the talent can’t outshoot the world, there’s zero answer and it’s an L. 7 yrs running. Guy just doesn’t get it.
Lets play guess the presser lol: we just didnt play with the right intensity. This game has to be played a certain way, and we didn’t. Blah blah blah, blame the players, never admit the coaching lacks and needs to improve.
One thing I do want to say, Schutte is proving he can be a serviceable player off the bench - don’t get yourselves all juiced up here lol, he’s not a game changer, but a pleasant surprise! He can give some decent backup minutes to spell Kante, and that’s much better than I ever thought for him. And this staff isn’t playing 2 bigs, you all know that.
Sure, it’s early, a lot of ball left, etc, but this is a really poor start. Team looks extremely unprepared for the season. And the scary thing to me is, the majority of the fix IMO lies with the coaches, and I have zero faith they can or even recognize that it’s actually on them and not their 20yr old kids playing perfect ball.
Only thing with the players I’ll say is, hey fellas, where’s the leadership? Anyone wanna step up to the plate?
So not going to spend a lot of time here, this is may be a .500 club right now if lucky - CAA should be licking their chops. Hope they figure some things out. If you don’t rebound or play D you’re gonna lose a lot of games.
Gonna see if I can bring my girls on Friday. At least a game I don’t care about, can have fun, hopefully pencil in a win.
