MBB Game 7 Rice Nov. 29 (Fri) 7 PM ET

Post by Jojogunne »

After the last two debacles, we head down to the sunny Bahamas for three games in three days at the Baha Mar Nassau Championship.

https://bahamarhoops.com/

We start by facing another Houston school, Rice (5-1). The Owls (the first of two such teams we will face this season) are off to a good start, losing only to FSU, 65-73.

Here's a season preview:

FloCollege (formerly FloHoops) will carry all games from the Baha tournament.

So, a team from Nassau making an international trip to Nassau to play a second Texas team in a row.

I don't think it'll happen, because it'll be a challenge enough just to win (ESPN has Rice with a 53.1% chance to win), but if for some reason Hofstra blows them out, the headline could be "Fried Rice."

I wonder when the last time we played consecutive games against teams from the same city other than New York City was.

Fried rice happened in politics. Tom Rice has one of seven House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump in January 2021, and he lost his 2022 primary to Russell Fry, who is in the House now. He represents northeastern South Carolina.

We led by 9, and we lead 31-28 at halftime. We led for 18:04. Aranguren committed 2 fouls in2 minutes without attempting a shot. Sanders played the whole half; Davis played 17 minutes; and Gadsden, Farmer, Graham, Robinson, Plotnikov, and Sunday played 8 to 12 minutes. Gadsden, Sanders, and Rice's Kellen Amos tied for the scoring lead with 7. Gadsden and Graham led us with 4 rebounds, and Caden Powell led all players with 5. Davis had 2 assists, and nobody else on either team had more than 1. Farmer shot 0-2, but he had our only block. We had 18 rebounds to Rice's 21. We had 10 points off turnovers, and Rice did not have any.

Way to hang on! Gutsy win to start off Baha Mar. Aranguren was a non factor, hopefully he and Sanders are featured more tomorrow.

Big game for Cruz as a leader and Michael Graham with 15 rebounds.

So we pull out the W in OT.

Wins are great, however, we need much work on offense. Very little flow, lots of one on one. We play 45 minutes and have 7 assists - not good!

Cruz played very well, not afraid to take it to the hoop. He is solid. Graham worked hard and had lots of rebs (maybe 15??)

Nice win but there is no such thing as a bad win.
The team keeps fighting. Very resilient.
How smooth is Cruz Davis?
Have we lost our free throw shooting ability? Shades of Rokas Gusys!
Trivia alert…Rice guard Denver Anglin is the younger brother of Dallas Anglin who sadly was part of the 4 players involved in the dorm theft at Hofstra many years ago. Their father Kyle played at St Bonaventure many years ago with current Rice head coach Lanier. Coach Lanier is a 1st cousin to former Bonnie and NBA all star the late Bob Lanier.

We won 68-63 in overtime. Davis led us with 22 points, and Robinson was our only other double-digit scorer with 12. Robinson led all players with 15 field goal attempts, which must be rare for a bench player. Graham had 15 rebounds, which was as many as the next two players on either team combined. Davis had 8 rebounds, led us with 3 assists, and led all players with 3 steals. On the Analytics tab, he had efficiency of 25, game score of 18.3, and net points of 12.6, all of which led all players by a lot. It was overtime, so we did not cruise to a win, but we would not have won without Cruz. Graham, Gadsden, and Sanders scored 7, and Aranguren fouled out with 2. It was the fourth time from 2004-2005 to now that we had at least six players with exactly 2 fouls. Plotnikov is the only player from a previous time that we still have, but he committed 1 foul today. Trae Broadnax led Rice with 16 points, and Caden Powell led Rice with 7 rebounds. Broadnax is the current American Athletic (AAC) player of the week. Kellen Amos led all players with 5 assists, all of which were after halftime. We had fewer rebounds for a lot of the game before finishing with more rebounds, 46 to 42.

https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=558042 has statistics that the box score does not have.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... /401716021 is the recap by AI.

We have not written a recap yet. From before the game, https://gohofstra.com/news/2024/11/24/m ... nship.aspx is titled "Owls Await Pride As Hofstra Heads To The Bahamas For Baha Mar Championship." Also from before the game, https://riceowls.com/news/2024/11/28/me ... st-hofstra is Rice's preview titled "Men’s Basketball Opens Nassau Championship against Hofstra."

Edit: https://gohofstra.com/news/2024/11/29/m ... -rice.aspx is titled "Davis Carries Hofstra To Overtime Victory Over Rice." It says Davis's 8 rebounds are his career-high. He scored as many points in overtime as Rice.

https://gohofstra.com/sports/mens-baske ... core/13418 is the box score. The bench played 88 minutes. Carlos Lopez made his Hofstra debut by playing the last 14 seconds. He is a sophomore who averaged 9.4 points for St. Francis last season. The attendance was 321.

In KenPom, we have the best defense in the CAA.

https://riceowls.com/news/2024/11/29/me ... ampionship is Rice's recap titled "Rice Drops Heartbreaker in Overtime to Hofstra in Nassau Championship."

Obviously a nice win that should have happened in regulation which could be a cause for concern moving forward. We shot 19% from 3 and only 60% from the foul line. Quite a few ill advised 3 point shots from Robinson and also Sanders. Also poor foul shooting from Jean and Graham. I don’t expect Jean to have these problems on a regular basis but Graham as has been mentioned here(Captain) could become another Gustys. IDK what his numbers have looked like in the past? Great overall game from Cruz who’s the real deal.

We should be very happy with this win against a quality opponent...yes it was ugly at times but Cruz, Graham and Farmer, with his free throws in OT stepped up big time!
On to the weakest team in the field Tarleton St.

Seems like Sanders was benched after an ill advised deep 3 early in the shot clock with a few minutes left in regulation.

Rice blew a 37-26 halftime lead and lost 68-67 hosting UNT Dallas. UNT means University of North Texas. Does anybody know of another time in any sport when we played a team that lost to a non-Division I team? Rice is 8-4, but in consecutive games they had a 77-75 win hosting 0-12 Alcorn State, and a non-Division I loss. They are 0-1 against power conference teams, and have only played three away games.

Evan I'm sure this has happened and I know in the pre-season both Syracuse and St John's lost to non D1 teams. I'm assuming you mean regular season games!

The University of North Texas is D1. It plays in the American Athletic Conference. UNT Dallas is an affiliated but related institution that is not D1. Yes, a very bad loss for the Owls.

I meant in the regular season. I remember when Le Moyne got noticed for winning an exhbition against nearby Syracuse, and now Le Moyne is in Division I.

I know that. Affiliated schools do not have to play in the same division, and there are many non-Division I SUNY schools. There are some schools where people don't know that they have non-Division I teams at additional campuses until if and when they play a Division I team.
