Iona lost to Princeton last night by 1 point after leading by 16. We have a lot of work to do before facing the Gaels on Friday.

We're 3.5 point favorites and ESPN is giving us a 73% chance of winning. Clearly we will need to play with a lot more intensity and shoot better then we did in the 1st half against Old Westbury. Maybe Aranguren will help with the inside skinny on Iona.

Pretty solid first half, quite the improvement from Old Westbury to tonight. Silas Sunday playin about as well as you can ask for. If he can stay on the floor and keeps getting minutes, he could be a HUGE asset down the stretch.

Sunday looks noticeably more in shape. Maybe its the haircut? lol

Love seeing the team push the pace, feel like they're playing a lot faster than last year. The inability to break the press continues to be beyond frustrating though.

For those at the Mack how's the crowd? Actually seems pretty decent for a change on TV

Their inability to break the press is ruining any possible enjoyment or excitement from this game. How after all these years can Speedy not coach up how to break the press?! ANYONE WANNA SET A SCREEN OFF THE BALL?!?!?

Nice win over local rival Iona. This team looks really really promising. I’m not going to get ahead of myself, but this team has some players on it. If we can get them to gel, watch out.

Agree that we might have a team here they play D and share the ball. No one on one players unless the shot clock is winding down. Very refreshing. Sanders at times seemed unconscious from three hit 5-9 for 24 points 1 turnover playing 40 minutes, 18 points for Jean 9 assists and 9 rebounds playing 35 minutes 0 turnovers, Cruz had 15 points 5 assists and 5 boards 1 turnover playing 36 minutes and at times he broke the press by himself. Super impressive kid great ball handler and can shoot. Silas Sunday benefited from the press and Iona's double teams finding himself alone under the basket for easy layups and dunks. He had 14 points,4 rebounds and 1 block. Michael Graham who picked up 2 quick fouls sat for a lot of the first half while DeCady picked up 5 fouls and fouled out in the first half. A freshman learning experience. Graham came back in the game and had a few put backs and O rebound points playing a nice game finished with 14 points 7 rebounds and 4 blocks. A nice win 90-76 but some lapses that let Iona whittle down a 18 point lead to 6. Not crazy once again with the play of Robinson who had his pocket picked for an easy layup and he didn't score a point. Made bad shots from floaters to brick three's.

Really good attendance announced as 3,347 with a lot of noise. The giveaways were effective.

https://gohofstra.com/sports/mens-baske ... core/13413 is the box score. Michael Graham had 14 points, 6 offensive rebounds, and 4 blocks, and no CAA player did all three of those in a game last season.

It was the third time since at least 1998-1999 that we had at least 90 points, at least 39 rebounds, at least 22 assists, at least 8 blocks, and at least 7 steals. The previous times were a 94-61 win hosting Jacksonville on November 14, 2014, and 102-62 win hosting non-Division I Farmingdale State on November 13, 2010. Since 2004-2005 we did that against two Division I teams, and the rest of the CAA combined to do that once against a Division I team, which was UNCW's 115-95 win hosting Virginia Military Institute (VMI) on November 24, 2009.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2024/11/8/me ... -iona.aspx is titled "Pride Sends Message With Dominant Win Over Iona."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67mKU1tMM2c is highlights.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... -iona.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Iona." The 89-62 win over Old Westbury was a unicorn score, meaning the first time we wom by that score. Our 79 points by newcomers were our most since at least 1991-1992. Our most from 1991-1992 through 2023-2024 was 77 in the 94-61 win hosting Jacksonville that I mentioned earlier. That game had Brian Bernardi score 22, Ameen Tanksley score 16, Malik Nichols scored 15, Juan'ya Green score 14, Rokas Gustys score 4, Andre Walker score 4, and Eliel Gonzalez score 2. Iona's sixteen players are all new.

We now have seven consecutive games that are not at home, and four consecutive games against teams from better conferences.

So who is the new guy??? a 6'6" forward. He's not on the roster (on the website). He was listed on the game program.

Where did he come from? Walk-on? Late transfer? Anyone know anything???

Probably a walk-on to fill out the roster for practices.

Here's another question: Have we ever had a player foul out in the first half of a game before? I assume that's happened in the college game, but it must be one of the rarer occurrences.

Once again our wonderfull local paper devotes two lines to our win. How can we expect decent crowds if that stupid paper won't even cover us.
As for the press, we did a great job in the first half, posting Silas down low...that's why he did so well getting many bunnies.

We went away from that in the second half and got a bit sloppy...we have TONS of talent on this team andcan't wait to see us jell in a month or so.

There is a good article on the IU-HU game on A Daly Dose of Hoops website. With the win, HU moves up to #155 on Ken Pom.

I noticed this guy yesterday but didn't see him on Monday so as Jojo said he's probably replacing Aiden Best as a walk on as we don't have any scholarships to offer. Also I saw Farmer in street clothes (hurt) and I'll ask this question again why hasn't Carlos Lopez played any minutes yet. He must be injured otherwise surely he would have played on Monday and should have gotten into the game yesterday with both Jean and Cruz playing with 4 fouls. Robinson playing the point has not looked good and yesterday was evidence of this. Thought Lopez could have come in the game and played the point. I didn't see anyone I could ask but would love to know what's going on.

I see he is now listed on the official roster. He is a junior and it looks like he played in HS but has not played since (based on his bio).
At 6'6" 220 lbs and fairly agile/athletic (based on his movement during pregame warmups) he could be a good addition for practice purposes.

Very early to draw conclusions, but so far I love the way we take care of the ball and lack of turnovers (not counting the 7 TOs that all seem to fall on Gadsden). JA, CD, and JS played lots of minutes and I believe had 1 turnover combined. Really good to see considering these 3 will be the ones with the ball the most.

Very impressed with Davis so far. I get the impression that early in the game he is not scoring focused and lets the other guys get points. Then in the second half when we need another scorer to emerge...there he is!

I like our starting five and assume that Gadsden is much better than we've seen and will show better in future games. I don't think Speedy would have gone after him (as a transfer) if he wasn't convinced TJ was much better than we've seen so far.

That was about the happiest I can ever remember Speedy postgame after a non conference game. Pace, energy and hustle from the team were outstanding. Handling the press and limiting fouls 2 areas to clean up going forward.

Really, really like Aranguren and Davis... those 2 seem to have high basketball IQs and might have that extra gear we've been lacking. Graham very nice fit for what Speedy wants out of a 5. Sanders can sure shoot it, but he's not gonna shoot 50% from 3 for the season. How impactful will he be on the inevitable off shooting night?

But a lot of encouraging signs overall
