Is There a Basketball Game Tonight? Charleston 2/16/17

Couldn't tell by checking theses Boards. Surprisingly we're only 2 point dogs...would be a nice win to keep the Feb momentum going!

Hofstra is starting Powers, Wright-Foreman, Pemberton, Gustys, and Bernardi.

College of Charleston is starting Grant Riller (guard), Jarrell Brantley (forward), Cameron Johnson (guard), Joe Chealey (guard), and Nick Harris (forward). http://static.caasports.com/custompages ... m#team.ind has their statistics.

We had a 5 point lead with just under 4 minutes to go, CofC then went on a 9-0 to take a 4 point lead, and the half ended with a 14-3 run to put the Cougars up 40-34. Our offense completely fell apart in the final minutes. Overall though, we're shooting 50% against the best defensive team in the conference.

The crowd looks decent on tv, at least in the parts of the arena they're actually showing.

Other than JWF (10 pts) from 2 (he's just 1/5 from 3) and Bernardi (12 pts) from 3 (4/6), no one else really doing much offensively. Rok has the third-most shot attempts, with 4 (made 3), but everyone else has a combined 7 shots.

Powers: 1 shot in 19 min and Pemberton: 2 in 16 min??? (both were SCORELESS in the half).

CAA Commissioner Joe D'Antonio is at the game. It seems like he's already been to HU more times than Tom Yeager ever was.

Reading the words "CAA Commissioner" and having it not be followed by "Tom Yeager" still sounds odd.

TV announcers just suggested that Gustys should try shooting free throws underhand. It's not just us thinking that anymore. They said that as they pointed out that he's 20-83 from the line.

How do you go to Powers there? Hardly shot the ball all game, JWF and Bernardi were hot all game. Yet Powers misses the jumper early in the possession, down 73-69...

Sure enough, out of a timeout, Bernardi then hits the 3 to cut it to 73-72.

Good comeback from being down 15, but horrible last possession that could've given us a win. We should've gotten free throws there.

Out of curiosity, anyone know how many technical fouls there are on each coach in the conference this season? I feel like we've had way too many on JAM lately, and i don't remember there being any on any other coach.
Ironically at about the same moment he picked up one, the women picked up a double technical in their game against Elon, not sure why though, since I was watching live stats for that game and had the men's game on tv. Krista was ejected, per twitter.

JWF said he was hit. The replay appears to show the same. He should have gone to the line with a chance to give HU the lead with three FTs and a great chance to tie with 2 of 3.

And as zman said (great point), after that, with :00.1 left, why did they not review to make sure who the ball was out off of and to see if any time should have been put back on the clock. Maybe it changes nothing, as it appeared out off of Bernardi, but at least take the look to make sure. As Mihalich has said all season, once again "on the wrong side of close."

Shame too, because after trailing by 20 to UNCW at home, at halftime, Northeastern rallied only to lose by 1. So an opportunity missed, and instead of being 1 back, they stay 2 back of the 6 spot.

Hofstra made 12 out of 30 three-pointers. They attempted one more three-pointer than two-pointer. It was the first time Hofstra made at least 12 three-pointers and at least 40 percent of their three-pointers in a CAA game since a 91-63 win hosting William & Mary on January 24, 2016. Hofstra has attempted more three-pointers than two-pointers in three of their last four games. Bernardi made 7 three-pointers. He is the only Hofstra player ever to make 8 in a game. Gustys had 16 points and 12 rebounds, but nobody else on Hofstra had more than 3 rebounds. Powers had 11 assists, which is the most by a Hofstra player since Green had 13 in a 77-66 win at Delaware on February 13, 2016. Green had 2 assists in games, but none were at home. The last Hofstra player to have at least 12 assists in a home game was Dwan McMillan in a 93-64 win hosting UNC Wilmington on February 25, 2012. Greer played 3 minutes, Hofstra was -5 while he played, and all his other statistics were 0. Hofstra had only 14 fouls (including Mihalich's technical) and 8 turnovers. It was the first time Hofstra lost when they had at most 14 fouls and at most 8 turnovers since an 83-74 loss hosting La Salle on December 23, 2014. Wright-Foreman got his second blocked shot of the season and Pemberton got his fourth blocked shot of the season. The attendance was 1,619.

Points per game in all games:

Wright-Foreman: 16.7 to 17.0
Bernardi: 12.4 to 12.7
Pemberton: 13.1 to 12.63
Powers: 13.0 to 12.57

The CAA has had five consecutive days and six out of seven days with two games decided by 2 points or fewer. That excludes January 30 when there was one makeup game, so there couldn't have been two games decided by 2 points or fewer. Five of the last fifteen CAA games have been decided by 1, and that excludes James Madison's win by 3 in overtime hosting William & Mary tonight.

Powers has 2 points, 1 rebound, and 11 assists. In the last ten years, there have been 14 times when an NBA player had at most 2 points, at most 1 rebound, and at least 11 assists.

Brian Bernardi played one of the best games of his career last night. In addition to keeping us in the game with his three-point touch, he hustled all night long, diving for loose balls and playing strong defense. Good job, Brian.

Time is running out on his college career...lets hope he stays hot and leads us to a couple of wins done the stretch. Great kid, always gives it his all and as I pointed out to Stu, always ends up playing in the back of the zone against much bigger and more physical players.

Hey guys, just learned of this message board at the game last night and looking forward to being a part of it!

To the points above, I was sitting right behind the scorers table with a clear view of the last possession and JWF WAS fouled. The defender clearly got him on the arm. I immediately looked at the ref standing right there and he was spectating, he was not making any call. Coach said it perfectly right before he was T-ed up, the official didn't have the guts to make that call.

As for reviewing the clock and who it was out off of, I completely agree. I was even yelling "check the clock" but coach was too busy getting on the ref for the no-call. I fault one of the assistant coaches for not thinking of that and telling coach to ask for that review instead of calling it a game and going after the ref. We all know Joe gets a little heated and one of the assistants has to keep a clear mind and make a point like this.

Hell of a comeback and exciting ending. Just imagine how good were going to be next year and the year after with JWF and Eli playing together longer and getting Buie back too. Hopefully a nice quality addition or 2 and we can have the NCAA Tourney run we have all been waiting for! I think JFW has the potential to be a special player who can lead us there if he has the supporting cast around him.

Frustrating loss but if anything this team seems to never be out of a game. They always battle back when trailing. That's a good trait for a team to have. Now if we could just play better in the middle part of the game to avoid having to try to comeback all of the time, we'd have something. Unfortunately this year we have been coming up just short. Very frustrating.

The Knicks have been doing it all year. It's become known as "the fake comeback" among Knicks fans. They make the final scores look respectable, only after digging holes they never can realistically climb out of, fully. The result is 23-34 right now, a bunch of close losses included. And Hofstra, 5-11 in the CAA with a bunch of their own close losses included. While that gives hope for losing teams like the Knicks and Hofstra that they can start eventually getting over the hump, we know what Parcells used to say about what records are and what teams really are. Maybe the Knicks start winning close games and make the playoffs, and maybe Hofstra will start turning "fake comebacks" into wins this week and in Charleston next month. But chances are, the Knicks will miss the playoffs, Hofstra won't get a top six seed and will be out of the CAA tourney early. Hope I'm wrong, but when you keep losing in that same way, it's probably because although you have the fight to avoid getting blown out, you lack the talent and everything else needed to win.

Well said Wags when we had Green we won those close games that happens with upperclass leaders. With 5 minutes left in the game Greenwould have like 5 to10 points. He would then take over the game and we would win close all great players do it. Remember sitting next to Husid 80 and would tell him time for Green to take over

Welcome to the boards!
We ran into JWF after the game who said he was definitely fouled.
I would have preferred they run a play down 2 with 10 seconds left, but at least the ball was in the right player's hands to make a play on his own.
I don't want to look past the remote possibility of winning 4 games down in Charleston, but JWF, Pemberton, and the bigs are a good start to next year. I like Buie and hope he regains his quickness. They really could use a defensive stopper and playmaking PG, and an athletic 4 who can rebound. Looking forward to see what Trueheart can provide as well.
