Lol of course he went there. Butler was a solid player, but I don't think he ever jumped out as a Big East level talent. Bashir finally officially entered the portal today, he'll certainly get looks from many power conference schools.

With Bashir in, we're now down to just the 2 Towson kids remaining from the 3 CAA All-Conference Teams, the other 13 guys have all graduated or gone portaling:

1st team
Tejada (Tow) - ???
Brzovic (Charl) - Grad/Portal
Duggan (Camp) - Portal
Bashir (Monmouth) - Portal
King (Northeastern) - Portal

2nd team
Williamson (Tow) - ???
Simpkins (Elon) - Portal
Camden (Del) - Graduated
Newby (UNCW) - Graduated
Dorsey (WM) - Graduated (unless he gets a waiver for 5th yr?)

3rd team
Boyd (Charl) - Portal
Fulton (Charl) - Graduated (unless he gets a waiver for 5th yr?)
Magee (Drex) - Portal
Luster (SB) - Portal
Farrakhan (Hamp) - Graduated

In addition, all 5 members of the All-Defensive team are gone (4 transfers including D-POY Nolan Dorsey (Camp) and 1 grad), as well as 2 of the 5 members of the All-Rookie team (including ROY Pasha). 6th man Tarke (Tow) graduated, and Scholar-Athlete McGriff (UNCW) transfered.

So if and when Tejada and maybe Williamson join the party, every single player in the conference who a received a postseason honor outside of 3 rookie-team guys will be gone. Could make a real argument for Cruz and Jean then being the 2 best returning players to the league next season

Stating the obvious here, just because players are in the portal does not mean they will be leaving their current schools. Someone has to want them. And the top programs, which I assume can offer the most $$$, will have the pick of the litter.

Gadsden has entered the portal

Didn't know that Gadsden had another year left! I was already counting on him being gone (albeit due to graduation/eligibility).

I guess RJ Luis did not like that Patino kept him on the bench the last few minutes of the STJ loss to Arkansas - he is now in the portal!

Yeh, thought he was already gone...no great loss. Physically imposing and athletic, he was a big disappointment...Onward and upward!

Note that in contrast, when L.R. Cryer was 1/11 in the Sweet 16 against Purdue, Kelvin Sampson stuck with him. Cryer hit a huge 3 that made it 60-55 late before Purdue tied it, 60-60, and Houston won, 62-60.

It was 64-62, Arkansas when Luis was benched after he made two free throws with 4:56 left. It's not like that one came down to the end without Luis. St. John's lost by nine.

Brutal. I get there's no contracts so these kids can do whatever they want, but why is the school so excitedly rushing to tweet out retention announcements if the kids are bolting not even a week later? This would still suck but not feel like such an unmitigated disaster if the school hadn't announced he was staying

This is the state of college basketball. What a mess for mid
and low majors. Aside from a select few schools with deep pockets for their basketball programs the rest of the D1 schools are basically screwed, unable to hold on to their best players from year to year. A major restructuring is needed to allow-level programs like Hofstra’s to survive.

I doubt it'll happen but something that could keep things closer to what they were with the old landscape would be if the poaching schools were forced to pay a "finder's fee" based on the NIL money the poached player would receive. If someone leaves a school like Hofstra and goes to a school Alabama, and get's paid $1 million, Alabama should pay Hofstra, say 20% ($200K). If another Hofstra player received $500K for going to Tennessee, Hofstra would receive the same 20% ($100K). Schools like Hofstra would still lose some players, but they could at least bank some money from those losses and pool it together to possibly keep one of their star players later on.

In an ideal (but maybe similarly unlikely) world, if the above were possible in conjunction with team NIL caps (like professional team salary caps), that could also help to level the playing field and smooth out the curve between the inevitable haves and have-nots that we're likely to see over time if they do nothing.

Wags, I don't think that will happen. The biggest schools will take that suggestion to court.
It's a very great area because something like this hasn't been done before, but think of it as a private company going and poaching from one of their competitors and offering more money for them to come to them unless that company has a do not compete clause for their employees then the poached company has no claim even do not compete. Clauses have been up in front of courts and they've been deemed illegal in some states.

Jim Larranaga is leaving Miami. He's discussed what's going on in college sports eight of his players have just entered the portal leaving for better money.

Sorry to see him go BUT I can't believe someone better than Hofstra will pay him. He's just not that good!

He has already stepped down after their first 12 games this season. He's also 75.

Sure, it's far from Estrada leaving, but he did average 14, 5, and 4. And with over 360 other D-I schools out there, 60% of which were ranked higher than Hofstra this year, I can see someone paying him. He only needs one and he may just want a fresh start elsewhere.
