So would you rather have Wills or the kid Monmouth signed today? A 5'10 sr guard today from Texas Southern. He was their leading scorer... averaged 13.9 pts, 4.4 reb, and 3.1 ast, and shot 38% from 3 (with more than 3x as many attempts as Wills).

Or how about the kid Charleston signed yesterday? Not a star but 6'5 Jr from 20 win Winthrop. Averaged 7.3 pts, 3.1 reb, 39% from 3 (and again over 3x the attempts as Wills).

As you guys have said, we're now down to only 3 or so open roster spots, are we gonna add anyone remotely exciting? How about just someone from a winning program? Nelson BY had a major intangible impact for us after spending years learning how to win at Davidson

I don't think anyone we sign the rest of the way will satisfy some of you on these boards and I get it. I'm still behind this team and Speedy believing that they will find a way to piece it together. We really need more then anything to find a Michael Graham type post player otherwise Sunday will be on the floor for too many minutes or we will go with 4 guards. Hopefully the whole will be greater then the sum of the parts.

I don’t think we are really asking for much. It’s not like we are in the A10 or some highly regarded mid-major bball league at this point and even when we had a stacked roster that was able to compete with the big names we never got it done when it mattered by never getting to the dance.

Then, we have a horrible year last year and now this year isn’t looking good. We have a coach in speedy Clayton and I think our board has frustration because we should have the pieces to get things done and we simply haven’t.

Just remember when you say "we never got it done" WE GOT IT DONE IN 2020 and punched our ticket. People are quick to forget in a normal world we would have danced. It wasn't on us that we didn't dance so people who continue to say we haven't been to the NCAA tournament since 2001 are very WRONG. That team deserves to be recognized. As far as other years we were on the doorstep so as cyclical as all sports are and will be we had a setback last year. Let’s move on and move forward!

Of course 2020 counts. That has never been nor ever will be up for debate. It sucks that we haven't seen Hofstra play in the NCAA tournament since 2001, but that's no fault of their own. We should've seen it five years ago, just bad luck that we didn't.

However, what's ahead feels more than merely cyclical. Yes, they were SO close in 2016 and before this past season, were top-four and a legit contender in the CAA for seven straight years. But it's a different sport now. The days of bringing in guys like Green and Tanksley (who only arrived because they came along with Mihalich from Niagara), or guys like Estrada, Tyler Thomas, or Dubar, to quickly turn things around are a lot more difficult now. Still possible, and maybe they find diamonds in the rough, but it's a lot tougher since that now takes the kind of NIL money that Hofstra doesn't appear to have. And the days of recruiting someone like JWF or Buie and holding onto players like that for four years are over. If Edmead is the real deal, he'll be gone after 1-2 years. So, this unfortunately feels a lot less like a one-year aberration after a long string of contending years and a lot more like the CAA basketball version of a small-market MLB team that doesn't have the money to come anywhere near the playoffs. I don't know how that changes unless they somehow get more NIL money but that's sadly the nature of the sport now and they're caught up in it.

Even in the new world of the "revolving door" small schools can find a way to prosper but obviously its much more difficult. Small market baseball not really a good analogy because teams like Tampa were able to live off of their minor league system. But unless you consider H.S juco and the portal the equivalent to baseballs minor leagues we don't have any minor league system to tap into. No JV in this college landscape. Hofstra will now have to strive just to be competitive and maybe not have aspirations to always be in the CAA championship hunt. This remains to be seen and it's up to Speedy and crew to navigate this new world.

I was actually going to mention Tampa Bay but didn't because they are the aberration. The Pittsburgh Pirates (who used to be good and then regularly couldn't compete for a very long time due to payroll constraints) also came to mind. Yes, MLB teams have minor leagues to tap into, but Rays aside, for the most part, you're generally not contending for a title in MLB if you don't spend a lot of money, especially with no salary cap, which is the case with men's college hoops and no NIL cap.

Hofstra's aspirations are always the same as every CAA team - to get to the NCAA tournament - but only a few CAA teams (like UNCW, Towson, Charleston) are realistically positioning themselves to accomplish that. If those contending aspirations ever change, Hofstra doesn't belong in the CAA any longer and should drop down to a lower conference or even a lower division.

Possibly the more accurate reference is that the CAA and similar mid majors are now the minor leagues for the p5 schools.

Maybe the NIT will end up like the FCS championship in football. It's pretty unlikely that a mid major team will ever make a deep NCAA tourney run again, it may not make sense to have auto-bids for them anymore.

Cactus I agree I've been saying it for years
Expand the NCAA to 96 teams P5 teams only
Designate the NIT to 64 teams strictly mid majors

Could eventually be headed that way but I hope not. That would remove all of the madness from March.

Unfortunately the madness seems to be on its way out with the difficulty in building and maintaining a winning roster.

Possibly, but way too soon to say based on only one NCAA tournament, the likes of which happened once every 6-7 years while operating in the old landscape. This past season was right on schedule for that, so that can't necessarily be attributed to the new landscape yet. But if they end up going with what Stu said above, then the madness will definitely be over - I don't think they want that. Although they love having power schools for the last couple of weekend of the NCAA tournament, they know that what drives the multi-billion dollar TV contracts is having a balance between that and first-weekend upsets and madness, so I think they'll still want to maintain that balance and not have that dry up completely - which is why we may see adjustments made with NIL allocation, whether that's through contracts and buyouts for poached players or a difference in revenue sharing, or some other ways to keep mid-majors relevant enough in that first weekend of the tourney but no so much beyond that (as it's been before under the old landscape). This is all still early in the new landscape and we have to see how it plays out.

Like a lot of people especially if you have an allegiance to a non power school we love to see power schools go down. It's the old David vs Goliath story line or stretching it more the good guys vs the bad guys(money, big advantage recruiting etc.) This would be my favorite part of the tourney but if this becomes extinct I for one lose a lot of my interest in this tourney. I don't like seeing the same teams or Evil Empires prevail year after year with of course some changes in schools. Hope this will not turn into the norm. We have totally desecrated what was pure in the landscape of college"AMATEUR" SPORTS! I'm surprised that there HASN''T BEEN MORE LAW SUITS AND PUSHBACKS.

So now my question comes at what point does the team have the finalize its roster for the coming season? Does the student and I use that term mildly have to be registered at the school for classes by September 1 what is the deadline?

I think the college transfers could be here for summer session 1, which starts May 20. Any true freshmen will probably be here for summer session 2, which begins June 25.

Most athletes take several summer courses to “lighten their load” the rest of the year.

Sorry, Stu. I thought you were asking a different question. Don't know how late a player can come in to qualify for the 2025-26 season. I would guess before the fall semester begins. Classes start Tuesday, Sept. 2.

So basically, we have four months to put together the roster with anywhere from 3 to 4 more players being added
