NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
Michigan St literally decimated from Elite 8 team Izzo was crazy about. 3 graduating seniors, 3 others entered in portal (including a team captain (Holloman), another speculated (Coen Carr) and best player - Jase Richardson probably will go pro (at least test the waters). He railed about this NIL/Portal business last week. There is some speculation he will give it up - he brought in 2 portal players last year but they didn't supplant any of his players. Much more work to be done this portal season.

I posted What Izzo said last week - it's a good listen for those who haven't heard it yet: viewtopic.php?p=97844&hilit=Izzo#p97844ZMAN3 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 2:21 pm Michigan St literally decimated from Elite 8 team Izzo was crazy about. 3 graduating seniors, 3 others entered in portal (including a team captain (Holloman), another speculated (Coen Carr) and best player - Jase Richardson probably will go pro (at least test the waters). Whether you like the NIL/portal world depends who you are. Izzo will hate it because he was one of the top teams building a roster with primarily "homegrown" recruits. But Nate Oats, whose top three scorers - Sears (Ohio), Estrada (we know where he came from), and Nelson (North Dakota State) - and whose fifth leading scorer - Wrightsell (Cal State Fullerton) - took him to a Final Four last year, will obviously love it.
He's gone - mid-first round pick on most mock drafts.

Great get for UNCW when he could have left the conference. It just got a little tougher for Hofstra (and for others in the CAA not named UNCW) to compete for conference title. https://x.com/TheFieldOf68/status/1907502978665529348
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
Some interesting reporting about the transfer portal in the Chronicle:
“On the other side of this dynamic duo was Aranguren, who initially announced he would be staying with the program. Just six days later, on Monday, March 31, his agent, Paolo Zamorano, told The Field of 68 that Aranguren had decided to enter the transfer portal.”

Richardson not gone until he's gone. Bridges stayed another year and he didn't get NIL. "Fat Lady" hasn't sung YET!
FAMILY HAS $ so that's not an issue

Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
True, we never know, but it's always a risk when they stay. He can raise his draft stock (and enjoy another year of college), but his stock can also drop, and he could be an injury away from not being drafted at all. I know his family has money, but he may want to make sure now that he follows in his Dad's footsteps to become a first-round pick.
This also doesn't seem promising for a return:

I get all MSU NEWS so I saw this already - doesn't mean anything
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
He'll let Izzo know long before us

This was the guy I wanted us to get...he will be even tougher with a strong supporting cast.Wags wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 3:40 pm Great get for UNCW when he could have left the conference. Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
Coming off a good season, as their second-leading scorer on an Elite 8 team, and now losing other key guys, not knowing who may replace them next year (and how that may impact his own play), and being projected as a mid-first round pick, his stock may not be higher than it is right now. Would be wise for him to go pro now than to risk that.
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
Baltimore guy who started at Maryland and didn't play much, so a coup for UNCW to keep in in the CAA and to get him themselves rather than him returning to the ranks of the power schools off of a good season at NC A&T. Moves like this along with UNCW's coming increased investment in NIL (that they recently announced) are only going to widen the gap between them and CAA programs like Hofstra if something doesn't change for those programs.HUSID74 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 9:02 amThis was the guy I wanted us to get...he will be even tougher with a strong supporting cast.Wags wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 3:40 pm Great get for UNCW when he could have left the conference. Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
Wags, why are we assuming that Hofstra has no NIL money? We have an NIL program...and I know there are some pretty deep pocketed supports.
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
I don't agree - he's undersized and needs work on his PG skills - not going to be a shooting guard at 6'3. His stock will not drop with another year at MSU - he's got room for growth - sitting on someone's bench not going to develop as much as playing full time.Wags wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 10:32 amComing off a good season, as their second-leading scorer on an Elite 8 team, and now losing other key guys, not knowing who may replace them next year (and how that may impact his own play), and being projected as a mid-first round pick, his stock may not be higher than it is right now. Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
I don't know what Hofstra has in terms of NIL, but if it's signifcant support, where are the fruits of it? Why did Lamothe go to UNCW and not Hofstra? Who has Hofstra signed yet as we are in Day 11 of the portal besides Boyd from Pace? And why did Aranguren enter the portal after it was announced he was staying? None of that would indicate strong NIL support yet.
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
All fair. Of course, the opportunity is there for the taking right now and may not be higher for him later than it is right now. He could get hurt or not get the attention he has now off of an Elite 8 appearance if Michigan State isn't as good next year. And in the meantime, other prospects could move past him on next year's draft boards. What you're saying could definitely happen but also, bird in the hand...ZMAN3 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 11:35 amI don't agree - he's undersized and needs work on his PG skills - not going to be a shooting guard at 6'3. So let's hope Tejada or Williamson now stab Towson in the back the way Jean did us. If not, Towson and Uncw will be GIGANTIC favorites over the rest of the league. Uncw and Charleston I get, but where is Towson digging up the money for these guys?!

Towson also added a 6'6 wing from Wright State today who averaged 11 pts and nearly 6 reb a game.

They have an NIL collective: https://www.gohcollective.com/dutchPride86 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 1:07 pm So let's hope Tejada or Williamson now stab Towson in the back the way Jean did us. And corporate sponsors (see under Support): https://towsontigers.com/sports/nil-marketplace (which Hofstra has too, but maybe not taken in as much? No idea).

UNCW steals a second good player from a CAA rival, this time, from the biggest threat to their CAA crown:

Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
Campbell's Colby Duggan, who was 1st team all-conference, just committed to Charleston. This is seriously getting out of hand
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
Exactly. And we are stuck with D2 players lol. We should’ve taken advantage of the good teams we had the prior 5-6 years before this season. Now we are at the bottom looking up. Hofstra doesn’t care about athletics.dutchPride86 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 7:24 pm Campbell's Colby Duggan, who was 1st team all-conference, just committed to Charleston. They have money as well. Just look at their endowment compared to the other schools like Charleston and Wilmington. We blow them out of the water. Why would we let this happen to our athletics program.
