MBB Game 29 Sat, Feb 22 @Delaware 4 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

On Saturday, there will be just three games left in the regular season.

Delaware (12-15, 5-9) has had a rough month. Four of the Hens' five losses (Monmouth, UNCW, Towson, and Campbell) have come in February. Their only win this month came over W&M. On Thursday, the Hens host Drexel.

Delaware has a balanced attack, with five players averaging in double digits.

FloCollege will carry the game.

The last conference game ever (and possibly the last game ever overall barring and unlikely meeting in DC next month) between Hofstra and the program Hofstra has played the most in its history.

It would be a very good idea for HU and UDel to schedule each other in the out of conference part of the 2025-26 schedule. A long played series started in the 1950's should be continued. How about a series of games at the Coliseum, Barclays, or UBS with St.John's- Fordham, Stony Brook- U Albany, and HU-UDel? That has to generate more interest than the HU-Seton Hall game last November in a poorly attended Coliseum.

I believe Speedy was asked about continuing to schedule UD after our last game vs. the Hens and he didn't think much of that idea.

Yeah, that was me who asked. :) I wouldn't say he didn't think much of it, just that we wasn't sure. He smiled and said, "We'll see, we'll see" on the thought of continuing the rivalry OOC, so I think he wouldn't mind it.

I hope he'll make it to Delaware for the game. I would think so, but it may depend on how he feels with the injury. He said after that same game against Delaware here last month that going there was always one of his favorite trips, so it would be a shame for him to miss it for that reason alone.

Update: Delaware lost to Drexel Thursday night, 74-78. The Hens are now 12-16 and 5-10. They've lost their last three games (we've lost our last six), but are 8-6 at home.

https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=546423 has statistics. We lead 32-17 with 7:05 left in the half. Davis has 11 points including 3 threes. Plotnikov and Farmer started, and Parnell was the first guard off the bench, so Sanders and/or Gadsden might be unavailable. Parnell made a three. Sunday and DeCady are our other subs so far.

The WRHU/HAWC stream has only music. I am assuming that they do not send anybody to the game, so they cannot say what is happening without Flo's video.

In other CAA games, Drexel won 64-55 hosting Charleston, and Drexel led by 18 with 10 minutes left. Hampton won 83-70 hosting UNCW, and Hampton led 43-26 at halftime. Towson had a good ending to win 76-67 at Campbell. North Carolina A&T won 73-72 hosting Stony Brook to improve to 3-13 after an 0-12 start, and Stony Brook is now in last. Stony Brook could have held for the final shot tied at 72, but they shot too soon. NC A&T got the ball to the basket, and drew a shooting foul with 0.6 seconds left. NC A&T made the first and intentionally missed the second to make the clock start.

William & Mary is at Elon tonight at 7:00 P.M., and https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=546603 will have statistics of that. With Towson's win and their help from UNCW and Charleston losing, an Elon win would let Towson clinch the 1 seed. UNCW can tie Towson, but Towson finished 1-0 against UNCW.

Edit: Delaware scored 8 to go down 32-25. Aranguren scored 6, but he is on the bench with two fouls, and Parnell played more than him.

Delaware ended the first half with a dunk to decrease our lead from 15 to 1, as it was 34-33. We did not scored for 5:02 including the last 4:38 of the first half. We got going early in the second half, and we lead 48-37. Farmer made 3 threes in 2:29, and he is tied with Davis for our lead with 13 points. Niels Lane leads all players with 15, and is shooting 7-10.

Edit: After our lead went up to 12 at 53-41, Delaware went on a run to go down 55-51 and make us call timeout with 11:22 left. With 12:22 left, we committed our sixth foul, so Delaware is in the bonus for the rest of the game. Delaware has only 1 foul in the second half, and already has more free throw attempts 9 to 4. Niels Lane made a three to get to 20 points. Davis has 16, and Farmer has 15. Graham and Sunday have 3 fouls.

Edit: We are on a 6-0 run that made Delaware call timeout with 9:15 left. We have 2 steals in the last 49 seconds. Aranguren has played only 15 minutes, and I am surprised he is not playing more. He has not committed a foul since his second with 13:22 left in the first half. He has 6 points and leads all players with 6 assists.

Edit: Delaware scored 4. Davis scored 2 to go up 63-55 and tie Niels Lane for the most points, but 17 seconds later he committed his third foul.

We went up double-digits, let the lead go down to 6, and Delaware missed a three with 2:37 left and a chance to go down 3. When Delaware fouled intentionally, they needed to commit four to put us in the bonus, and Plotnikov made 2 free throws to get to 8 points. We won 78-65. We are tied for 11th with Delaware, and we swept them. Our games against Delaware had our largest and tied for our fourth largest margin of victory against a Division I team. Delaware was favored by 1.5, and KenPom expected Delware to win 70-69.

It will be very hard, but it looks possible to get out of the bottom four to avoid playing in the CAA Tournament First Round. We lost to Drexel and Hampton, so we need them above us. If we win both, Northeastern loses all three, Drexel wins at least one, Hampton wins at least one, and UNCW (our best win, currently 11-4) finishes above Campbell (Northeastern's best win, currently 10-6), we will win a tiebreaker over Northeastern based on our best win.

Edit: Davis led all players with 28 points, including shooting threes 6-9. He also had 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Farmer had 19 points, 7 rebounds, to lead us, and 3 assists. The Delaware announcers said they were not told about Parnell, who scored 10. Plotnikov made 2 threes and scored 8. Aranguren shot 3-5 and scored 6, and led all players with 6 assists. Graham scored 4, Sunday shot once and scored 2, and DeCady scored 1. Sanders and Gadsden did not play. Aranguren had early foul trouble, and without more foul trouble he missed the last 11:22. He played 15 minutes. Robinson played only the last 28 seconds of the first half. DeCady played 6 minutes. We had only seven players play more than 6 minutes. Davis, Farmer, and Plotnikov played 40 minutes. Two played the whole game, and Davis got the last 28 seconds of the first half off, so he played 40 when rounded to the nearest minute. Graham had 2 of our 4 blocks, Sunday had 1, and Farmer had 1. Sunday had 4 rebounds, 3 fouls, and 4 turnovers. Plotnikov had 3 of our 7 steals.

Niels Lane led Delaware with 24 points, and led all players with 10 rebounds, which was more than double his average. He commited 3 turnovers, and led all players with 4 fouls. Izaiah Pasha scored 12. He had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 turnovers, 1 block, and 2 steals. John Camden, who leads Delaware in scoring, was held to single-digits with 9. Erik Timko, who entered averaging 11.9 points, did not score. We defend twos much worse than we used to, and Delaware shot twos .636. Luckily they shot threes 4-20 (.200), and it is hard to win a game with 9 fewer made threes than your opponent.

Here are anayltics leaders. In efficiency, Davis had 29, Farmer had 24, and Lane had 23. In game score, Davis has 22.9, Farmer had 17.2, and Lane had 15.5. In net points, Lane had 6.9, Aranguren had 3.8, and Trent Middleton Jr. had 2.5. Aranguren was our only positive player. It adds up to a negative number for all players combined, but it makes no sense that it adds to -25.0 for Delaware and -37.3 for us.

We shot threes 13-24, which is better than we shot twos. After our fouls early in the second half, I was worried that Delaware would end with a lot of free throws, but we committed only 2 fouls in the last 12:21. We had a good ratio of 19 assists to 13 turnovers. Exactly half of our points came from threes, and we shot free throws 5-6.

Interesting that Farmer got 13 shots and Aranguren only five today. Maybe they should've been giving Farmer more shots and more playing time and shots to Parnell all along. They both came up big today. Although, it's hard to tell because Delaware doesn't play defense.

As is often the case in hoops at every level today, 3-pt. shooting makes all the difference. Hofstra 13/24, Delaware 4/20.

The series ends as conference rivals with Hofstra holding a 71-34 advantage. The Pride won the last 10, 17 of the past 19, and 23 of the past 26.

Delaware played Iona at UBS Arena in Dec. 2021 and they've played OOC games in CT and NJ in recent years, so there's no reason why this necessarily has to be the last meeting ever. We'll see. Drexel will soon become the opponent Hofstra plays most and it would take a while, but Towson could eventually move into the second spot ahead of Delaware.

Start of a seven or eight-game (depending on the seed) winning streak to cut the nets in DC! LOL

Speedy said today that they're going to try to talk to Delaware to keep the meetings going. He said he hopes today won't be his last visit to The Bob, so it sounds like they would even go back there if they had to in order to keep the rivalry going. Glad he was well enough physically to make the trip after the leg injury Thursday night.
