MBB Game 14 William & Mary Jan. 2 (Thu) 7 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

We begin our league schedule this week by hosting William & Mary.

The Tribe (6-7) have a new coach (Brian Earl), five transfers and four freshmen. They have won three of their last four games.

SR Noah Collier leads W&M with 14 ppg and SR Gabe Dorsey (12 ppg) was a CAA preseason first-teamer.

FloCollege and MSG2 will carry the game.

This will be the 25th anniversary of The Mack and five years since William & Mary spoiled the 20th anniversary, so the Pride owes the Tribe some payback.

Jan. 2, 2000: Speedy led Hofstra to a 74-46 win with 19 points.
Jan. 2, 2020: William & Mary 88, Hofstra 61

Ok time to get serious this season. We need to get off to a good start in CAA play by taking care of W&M Thursday night.
After watching us every game in the OOC season we know what we have.
I would start Graham (needs to play more) Davis, Aranguren, Plotnikov and KJ Robinson (our best 3 point shooter).
Off the bench I would give DeCady more time, spelling Graham and Plotnikov, cut back on Sanders' and Sunday's minutes and let Sanders work himself back into the lineup but honesty I have not seen very much from him.
Thoughts???

To All, Happy New Year for 2025! I hope all our friends on the message board have a great Healthy and Happy 2025! I like HUSID74's assessment of the HU team at this time. The first two weeks of the CAA season (W&M, NU, CofC, and UNCW) are not easy. Having three games at the Mack and only one on the road should help. By about 3:30 on Saturday, January 11th, we all should know how "tough" this team will be in 2025. The ESPN win projection is HU 72.6% and W&M 27.4%. KenPom is HU #177 and W&M #223.

Optimum just dropped MSG in a “carriage dispute,” so our games (as well as those of the Knicks and Rangers) may not be available to certain households until this matter is resolved.

Aren't they both owned by Cablevision?

Altice is one of greediest companies doing business on Long Island. In the NY Post article they claim they are concerned about passing along the costs to their customers. OMG. They just increased my bill for their base services significantly and now no MSG as well. They are shameless liars. Cable I understand is regulated by the NYS Public Service Commission which year after year rolls over for Altice. I'm done and will look elsewhere but there is not much elsewhere. I do not understand why Long islanders cannot join together to boycott this company because the PSC will not look out for the consumer.

It's suposed to be on MSG2 but if you have Optimum, you're out of luck.

Since when are Hofstra games on MSG? Would've been a nice surprise. Regardless, I'm in an Optimum house, but not for long if they don't give me back my Knicks!

This is their 2nd or 3rd season with a chunk of home games simulcast on MSG channels. But as an xfinity household in CT myself, hell will freeze over before I ever get MSG. If it's any solace will be the exact same broadcast on Flo, MSG wasn't bringing in any of their ppl or production value for us.

Should be an interesting contrast of styles tonight. W&M is the 2nd highest scoring team in the CAA and 34th in the country in tempo (per kenpom), but they are not good defensively. I'd like to think our defense translates well enough to slow them down some, but if we can't score 65-75 pts at home vs this team....

One key area on the defensive end, W&M makes and attempts the most 3s of any team in the conference, we actually enter conf play as the 2nd worst team in the league in 3p fg% defense

https://gohofstra.com/news/2024/12/31/m ... tribe.aspx is titled "Mack Sports Complex Turns 25 As Pride Renews Rivalry With Tribe."

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... game14.pdf is our Game Notes.

https://tribeathletics.com/news/2025/1/ ... night.aspx is W&M's preview titled "Men's Basketball Opens CAA Slate at Hofstra on Thursday Night." Daniel Dixon, who made a three to beat us, is an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... ofstra.pdf is W&M's Game Notes.

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... mstats.pdf has W&M's statistics. A majority of their field goal attempts are threes. They get 44.9 percent of their points from their bench. Noah Collier leads them with 13.8 points, and his 19.9 minutes must be among the fewest minutes by a player who leads his team in scoring. Collier, Gabe Dorsey, Chase Lowe, Keller Boothby, and Malachi Ndur started all 13 games. Five bench players have played in over 75 percent of their games while averaging over 10 minutes, and that excludes Caleb Dorsey. Caleb Dorsey averages 8.6 points in 15.7 minutes. He played in 5 of 13 games because of injury, but can play now. All 15 of their players attempted a three. Collier had only 8 of 111 attempts be threes, and he has an elite .640 field goal percentage. Gabe Dorsey (.409), Caleb Dorsey (.476), and Isaiah Mbeng (.412) shoot threes great. Collier leads them with 5.8 rebounds. Lowe is second with 4.9 rebounds. He missed his only two threes, and it is unusual to have a 6'5'' guard who has not made a three. Their statistics look better than what you would expect from a 6-7 team, but they had two non-Division I wins by a combined 102 points to help their statistics while counting the same in their record as wins by 1. They have a five-way tie for their tallest players at 6'8''.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... tgame.html is Jerry Beach's "Keep It Perky: Quinnipiac postgame."

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... -mary.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: William & Mary." The Quinnipiac game was our first overtime game without leading in the second half since a 92-90 win hosting James Madison on January 24, 2011 in which we trailed by 15 in the second half. We shot free throws 17-17, which was our most free throws made without missing in at least 45 years. Five of the last nine teams to make at least 17 free throws without missing lost. Home fans haven't distracted free throw shooters, as eight of the last ten teams to do that were away. It was the first time a CAA team made or allowed at least 17 free throws without missing since Detroit Mercy shot 17-17 in a 98-84 loss at us on November 27, 2021. The last time a CAA team made at least 17 free throws without missing against a CAA team was when Northeastern shot 19-19 in a 74-69 loss at Elon on February 1, 2020. Quinnipiac's .293 field goal percentage was the lowest by a team that beat us from 2002-2003 to now.

KenPom expects us to win 77-72 with a 66 percent chance of winning.

https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=547145 will have statistics.

Here are today's other CAA games, which are also at 7:00 P.M.

Delaware at Northeastern: https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadca ... ?id=548464

Of course that’s why I never noticed. I’m a season ticket holder so usually at the home games. Fitting that this is the one I can’t go to LOL

We had a player average at least 17 points in the last 11 seasons and 19 of the last 20 seasons. Davis is averaging 15.3, and Aranguren is averaging 14.3, so one of them will need to improve a lot to average 17 points.

We are starting Sanders, Davis, Aranguren, Plotnikov, and Graham. W&M is starting Noah Collier, Gabe Dorsey, Chase Lowe, Keller Boothby, and Malachi Ndur. Collier, Ndur, and Boothby are forwards. It is rare to start three forwards. It is also rare to average 17.5 assists while the leading player's 2.8 are only 16 percent of the team total. To compare, Aranguren leads us with 31 percent of our assists. In 2015-2016, Juan'ya Green had 48 percent of our assists.

W&M scored the first bucket then, big runs each way.
10-0 Hofstra with 8 from Sanders
Then 16-0, Tribe.
