Who's on your Hofstra Sports Mount Rushmore?

Post by RainDelay »

It's a down week with no basketball and very little else going on, let's have a fun discussion!

Pick 4 athletes to be on Hofstra Sports Mount Rushmore, for whichever reasons you see fit. I'm excited to see the variance and different options, because I'm not even sure where to go, or how to weigh success AT Hofstra vs professional success or both.

Some names that come to mind are... Marques Colston, Wayne Chrebet, Chris Weidman, Speedy Claxton, Charles Jenkins even Justin Wright-Foreman, Alex Masai for cross country...

Let's hear it

Marques Colston had 10,000 yards receiving in the NFL... are you suggesting he was unsuccessful?

To be fair that wasn't necessarily the point of the post. I stated in the original post that it could be either while AT Hofstra or after they attended the university in which case Colston/Weidman would be one of the top picks available. I'd also appreciate it if someone didn't tell ME what my own post means

I'd argue that Chris Weidman could be on either one as well...

Bill Thieben should at least be nominated. Galati and Shanahan should be locks.

Agree with some names like Speedy, JWF, Jenkins, Chrebet, Colston, don't know the other sports well enough to judge those, but I'd like to throw out a few more basketball names as honorable mentions if nothing else: Loren Stokes, Antoine Agudio, Steve Nisenson, Bill Thieben. For me, Stokes is like John Starks (maybe not the best but always two of my personal favorites because of the fearlessness and energy in how they both played every game - interesting that they both fall into that same kind of category with Hofstra and the Knicks for me and have such similar sounding names).

Sorry! I somehow missed your original post, and first saw Stu's. So I mentioned Chrebet & Colston on my own, certainly not questioning you

All good man, I think it’s two separate fun discussions! Now I think I have to come up with a strictly AT Hofstra one although I don’t know enough about the niche sports lol someone would have to help me out

Love the Loren Stokes shout - one of the most underrated players we’ve had here

Different games but the same in terms of fearlessness, energy, intensity, and focus. No other Hofstra player that I've seen -- and I have seen many (as coincidentally, today is the 30th anniversary of my graduation from Hofstra) -- sought contact in the paint despite a thin frame more than Stokes. Always admired that about his game.

Doug Shanahan was a 2 sport All American (Football and Lacrosse) and won the first ever Tewaaraton Trophy (the Lacrosse version of the Heisman Trophy). Nick Gallo was Hofstra's only wrestling National Champion He was the 1977 Champion at 126 pounds and the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 1977 NCAA Tournament. Olivia Galati was a 2-time Softball All American. Look at Bill Theiben's basketball scoring and rebound numbers. They still are some of the program's best records. I realize this was in the 1950's, but the numbers just jump off the page (48 points in a game, 43 rebounds in a game, and NBA Piston's draft choice). How about these four for the most deserving HU athletes as our Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt.

This is why I mentioned Thieben and Nisenson. They were both well before my time so I didn't see either play, but the numbers are crazy for each. I'm surprised others aren't also mentioning Nisenson - his Hofstra career scoring record stood for 43 years (before Agudio broke it) and was set in only three years (he wasn't allowed to play as a freshman) and with no 3-point shot during those years. He'd still be Hofstra's all-time leading scorer by a wide margin had he played as a freshman and played with a 3-point shot. His No. 13 is retired at Hofstra and he's in the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame, and although he didn't ultimately make the team, he was the 37th pick overall, selected by the Knicks.

I thought Charles Jenkins broke the school scoring record.

Nisenson's record stood for 43 years before Agudio broke it, Jenkins broke Agudio's record three years later, and JWF missed tying Jenkins' record by 186 points eight years after that.
