MBB Game 4 @UMass, Nov. 16 (Sat) 7 PM
It seems odd that we were in the same building as our next opponent on Wednesday and now have to travel up to their campus to play them. That's probably a first for us.
UMass (1-3) didn't look great against Louisiana Tech in the Icons of the Game doubleheader at Nassau Coliseum on Nov. 13. The Minutemen rallied late in the second half, but lost 76-66. They also lost on the road to Providence (exhibition) and West Virginia, and beat New Hampshire at home.
I don't expect this game to be easy, but I do think it is winnable.
You can watch it on ESPN+.

ESPN only gives Hofstra a 24.7% percent chance of winning. I hope Speedy and his staff tell his team that and also tell them that ESPN gave them a similar 24.9% chance of beating Seton Hall.

We're also 5.5 point underdogs in this game. Hopefully we will score more then 50 points lol!

IMO I think this game is even....first road trip for this group so that may be a factor, but our starters are experienced enough to handle all the distractions...GO PRIDE!

Tough game, we have not played UMass well over the years. I remember driving up to Amherst in ‘08 in a snowstorm just to be down double digits before I got to my seats.
Have to take care of business on the boards and we will have a good chance to win.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... setts.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Massachusetts." We are the only team to win while scoring under 50 this season, and it happened five times last season. Jerry wrote that the previous team to win while scoring under 50 was Virginia on February 17, but the Stathead Play Index found that Bradley won 48-45 on February 24. We became the first team to win while scoring at least 90 and win the next game while scoring under 50 since Akron on January 20 and 22, 2022. It was the longest it took us to reach 40 points since a 73-49 loss at Southern Methodist (SMU) on January 19, 2014.
KenPom expects Massachusetts to win 76-70 with a 70 percent chance of winning.
https://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=547829 will have statistics.
Seton Hall played another low-scoring game, as they beat Wagner by a score that could have come from Football. Seton Hall won 54-28. Wagner scored 14 in each half, and I wonder when the last time a team scored 14 or fewer in both halves was.

Excited to tune into ESPN+ on this Saturday night. The projections are too close, I’m keeping my faith in the Pride and think that if we don’t let anything get away from us early, we can take this one!
Let’s break the trend of playing down at UMass

Great start (first 10 min) to go up by 13. Next 10 min not so good. Sloppy with the rock (7 assists vs 9 TOs) and forcing a few drives leading to three rejections. Still up by 5 at the half.

Terrible last 8 minutes of the half, just completely wasted the hot start. Should be up way more than 5.
Thought Speedy stuck with Kijan too long there. I know he hit a couple 3s but he's noticeable out of position all the time on defense. Umass press also took us out of rhythm on offense, a concerning early season trend. Too many sloppy turnovers in general
That being said should not lose this game, but far from comfortable right now

#4 is killing us on D. Blocks anything near the rim.
Also, no points from Sanders yet.

Fouls starting to get out of hand here, gonna be very difficult to hold this lead with how this half is tracking

3 Achilles heels for this team right now, and they all just reared their head in a row as Umass ties it up: fouling, inability to secure rebounds off missed FTs (never seen a team struggle with that before like this), and sloppy turnovers against the press

We eek it out in OT. Good foul shooting 16-20 was the difference. Cruz had 21 and Jean had 20 with 11 rebs. Gadsden 12 rebs.
Its not always pretty, but the guys never give up. 4-0 on to Florida St!

Wow gutsy win! The mental fortitude this team has been showing down the stretch of games has been really impressive. Still plenty to clean up, but against these types of opponents take it any way we can get it.
Guard play speaks for itself, but I thought Gadsden was the unsung hero of this game. More I watch of him more I realize how much of an impact he makes on defense and on the boards. Sunday even affected a few shots down low late too. And big shout out to Graham coming in fairly cold off the bench in OT to make 2 huge winning plays with the putback on one end and the stop on the other

I watched the Men's Soccer game, and got to see the end of this game after that. We should get some votes in the Mid-Major Poll.
On the Analytics Tab, Davis led all players in efficiency with 23 and led all players in game score with 16.3. He tied Aranguren for our most net points with 10.2, and Massachusetts had Jaylen Curry lead all players with 10.9. The bench played 27 percent of the game, which is a lot by our standards.
Our three forwards combined for 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 10 fouls.

This team can be something special. I especially like their grit and determination to go to the basket...two things that we have lacked in the past.
This was a huge win for us because now we face two big boys!
