MBB Game 1 SUNY Old Westbury, Nov. 4 (Mon) 5 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Only 11 days until our 2024-25 season starts.

SUNY is led by Hofstra alum Bernard Tomlin, who is now in his 19th year as head coach. A standout scorer at Malverne HS, Bernard transferred to Hofstra from Utah in 1974 and was a great player for Roger Gaeckler's early teams.

Bernard holds the Hofstra record for field goals made in single game (20) and was the season scoring leader (11.8 PPG) and free throw leader (52-61 .852) in 1974-75. That year he also scored 42 points vs. Oral Roberts -- a big number in those days (no three-point line).

Bernard also had 16 points in Hofstra's 80-78 loss to UConn in the first round of the NCAAT. Was anybody else at that game?

I was there for the entire season as the Hofstra SID. The Oral Roberts game was even more incredible as Bernard only had two free throws despite being hammered all night! He should have easily scored 50 or more points.

Oral Roberts was a pretty good program back then, wasn’t it?

Here are the game notes for today's contest:

https://gohofstra.com/documents/2024/11 ... 5game1.pdf

No starters listed. However, on page 2, there are some interesting career stats for our five returning players and six transfers (table does not include our two freshmen).

Lopez appears to have been the most productive, scoring 281 points in 30 games (9.4 ppg). Gadsden (8.8 ppg) and Aranguren (8.1) are close behind.

Sanders, the former NYS Mr. Basketball, appeared in 51 games at Seton Hall, but started none and scored only 145 points (2.8 ppg).

The game will be on FloHoops.

Hofstra will be the second Pride team playing today. The IU Columbus Crimson Pride lost at IU Indianapolis in the first game of the D-I season (well, not for the Crimson Pride, since they're not D-I, but for IU Indy). Sounds like a perfect team nickname for Aaron Estrada, since it sounds like a cross between Alabama and Hofstra. Happy Opening Day, everyone!

Not a good start for the Pride. We're tied at the half against a POOR D3 team...they are hitting threes and we are chucking threes...we need to show SOMETHING at the Hoop. Hopefully Speedy gives them an earful at the half!

Any thoughts on Sunday? With his size, I’d like to see him getting minutes - hasn’t touched the floor yet as far as I can tell.

When he finally touched the floor picked up a quick DUMB FOUL.!In addition with what Decady was showing as a freshman this could limit Sundays minutes.

OW didnt really have a Center, so on D it was a terrible matchup for Silas (trying to guard at 6'5 or 6'6 guy around the perimeter). Of course on O, he should have been an absolute bucket maker. In the end he only played 3-5 minutes.

Game was a story of two halves. As already said, first half was horrible, second half much better.

Looks like we have a player in Jean Arungoren (spelling). Kid is pretty talented and smooth (both outside and driving to the hoop).

Not only Aranguren but super smooth PG Davis who was also very quick and who had 8 assists along with his 19 points without a turnover in 29 minutes. Sanders looking good in this game with 15 points all from 3 point land and as advertised Decady getting 22 minutes and scoring 11 points along with 5 rebounds and a block. We may have a freshman who's going to contribute but have to remind ourselves this was against a D-3 team. I thought Robinson once again not impressing at the PG and taking bad 3 point shots going 0-5. Somehow though he had 10 points and 10 rebounds. We'll need to play better much better against Iona.

Robinson's previous high was 4 rebounds.

https://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/202 ... tbury.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Old Westbury."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRnW9YMajWo is highlights

UNCW played an early candidate for most combined points in a game, as they defeated non-Division I Mount Olive 143-91. That is 234 points. UNCW scored 81 in the first half. UNCW scored 25 more than our record of 118.

Agree on all pts triplec, including (unfortunately) the play of Robinson (who continues to try and score instead of making plays and passes).

Robinson's best moves were drives to the basket and a couple of 10 footers but I give him credit he does work hard on defense.

Agree with a lot here

NEWCOMERS

Stared - 5 newbies - all transfers - Aranguren-Davis-Sanders-Graham-Gadsen
Aranguren - looked levelheaded and steady - and made good shot selection and was our best player last night
Davis - smooth - nice stroke -
Sanders - weird shot - not athletic looking - but had some good number
* what impressed me about these three - was how they moved the ball -all giving up decent shot opportunities - to give another a better look
DeCady - hustled all night - will be a work in progress

VETS

All off the bench
Robinson - looked bigger (slightly) and more confident - takes bad shots - played good D
Plotnikov - off night - seemed to give some energy - also was the recipient of many a Speedy glare
Sunday - my predicted starter - looked completely uninterested in the game and only saw the court in the 2nd half
Parnell - looks athletic and nailed his first shot - nice size moved well

We will the Ultimate in Guards We Trust - I think all our key guys came into college basketball recruited as point guards - Arangruen/Davis/Robinson/Plotnikov (yes he was) and Parnell (maybe not Sanders) - so hopefully moving the ball around will help us get open looks - rebounding and getting to the basket and drawing fouls might be issues - 3 and D

Last Years Keys - moving on

Carlos - Syracuse - starting and getting real minutes in their opener - against upstate rival/powerhouse LeMoyne -'Cuse wins in a squeaker
Dubar - Tennessee - out with personal situation - DNP
Barrouk (SHU) and Tomasco (Temple) - teams squared off against each other in their teams' openers - neither contributed much
Sideline Sammy - Hofstra - going big-time and moving courtside this year - Hofstra's Spike Lee - and Speedys Deputy on the other side court

I saw this! Was sitting near him and was happy to see it. He was coaching them when they were on defense in the second half. "Hands up, hands up!"

We'll see how this plays out, but seeing this new roster in person for the first time, I'm a little concerned about their size and physicality. They generally looked physically smaller (shorter and thinner) than what HU has had in the past and what they've faced in the CAA in the past - I mean, even at the guard positions - aside from up front with Sunday, which we already knew (but he doesn't actually throw his weight around in the paint on a consistent basis) and Decady. Something to keep an eye on in CAA play but I also obviously haven't seen the size that other CAA team have with their new rosters. Can't take much away from a game against a D-III team, but if last night was any indication, Aranguren, Davis, and Sanders could be a nice trio and Decady has some potential up front.

Here's a story on last night's game if anyone's interested:

Wags, Thanks for the article link. My family really enjoyed the insight into how Coach Speedy looks at the team's performance. It's funny that with the win, the ranking on Ken Pom reduced about 20 spots from the 160's to the 180's. Iona is ranked about the same location as HU, so Friday's game should be a real toss-up.
