A stat fill game on O, poor D.

Congrats to Silverio… but thank goodness he didn’t break the record. That’s all we need. This is the worst thing that could happen, he plays lights out one game and fools himself and the staff and the fanbase that he’ll play like that again - he won’t. He needs to play less, sorry. He has cost more games than he’s won. He owes HU this performance and a lot more. I really hope Speedy doesn’t keep green lighting him - his shots were again way too deep and he has no business shooting like that on this team with his skill level. Gonna suck when he does this again next game and clanks them like normal. I have no interest in his game.

Amazing to see a team play such scrappy D in some ways and allow a team to shoot 50% - bad omen. Still no roster so they get gassed every second half.

Will take the W against the worst team they’ll face in this stretch, now we’ll see what they do against a quality one.
I'm not sure what the complaint is here about it being too close - they led by 24 at the half and, yes it got to nine in the second half, but back to double that three minutes later, and they were up 20 with under two minutes left. It was a blowout win, never in doubt. It's what they should have done against a bad team and they did.

And although my sense on Silverio aligns with yours (today's game might be an aberration for him), let's see - maybe they found another shooter to help the others IF his shot selection is what it should be. Silverio can make shots when he takes the right ones. His problem (which I agree, and which I've said in other threads, is on the staff) is allowing him to take too many questionable 3s. But if he takes the right ones and contributes as a supplement to the shooting of Ray and Cooks off the bench in a controlled way, it can be a plus. It's up to the staff to turn Silverio into THAT kind of shooter. At least we know one thing - Silverio certainly doesn't lack confidence. :D And a shooter needs that.

The D was really good in the first half. They were all over the place and gave very little space. They certainly took their foot of the pedal in the first part of the 2nd half, but recovered.

Davis hit a bunch of contested 3s - he was on fire from anywhere behind the arc.

What I thought was great was the first half offense. The did end up taking a bunch of 3s but it was off a lot of ball movement. In past games it was 1-2 passed and a 3pt attempt. Today they were swinging the ball around the perimeter as well as driving and kicking.

The difference for Silverio to me today was many of his 3s were open off a great pass. Many games before he’d take a few dibbles and just launch. Today they were feeding him because he was hot.

Also from my seat it didn’t look like he took too many from distance. To me most felt like they were thrown to him while he was camping at tue line. There was one, but the shot clock was expiring in the final minutes.

All in all liked what I saw on O and D first half. As the coaches acknowledged, they just need to keep up the intensity for the full 40.

Far from a clean game, but seeing them in person for the first time, I’m feeling pretty good especially with the current lack of size

I was typing while you posted. I don't have a way of finding out what our record or the CAA record is for points in a half.
Great offensive half today, but it wasn't even the highest first-half output in the past two years - the Leap Day, Senior Day home game was, when HU led JMU, 61-33, at the half on 2/29/20. However, Hofstra scored one fewer point that day (97) than today.

Oh I def agree, they did what they needed to today and the game wasn't really in doubt. Take the W all day. But they absolutely let them come back, and gave up 84 points to an awful team, let them shoot 50%, and let a guard torch them for 39... on their own floor  I'm supposed to be impressed with that from a team that supposedly wants to win the CAA? Sorry, that's not a strong game. A W yes, quality no. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but our standards are so low here. We need to rise up.

And there you go Wags, doing exactly what I said lol allowing Silverio to fool you! How many "IFs" you have in your comments?! lol c'mon man, you know better. He's not going to do any of those things. He's an upper classman. He is what he is. We gotta stop getting fooled. He is a streaky player, a selfish player, a wayyyyy overconfident player, and a poor decision maker.

He should be utilized in spot situations, limited action. Today was a complete aberration. An awesome one, not taking it away from him, said congrats. Big game. But this is not an indication of any kind. He remains a huge risk. I'm not interested in anything more than strategic use - of which I DO think he can be quite helpful. Great points P97, both on ball movement in general and Silverio's effectiveness off the pass rather than the dribble. That right there might be something they can play off of - again in spot scenarios, but a potential benefit none the less - IF they can keep him from launching on his own all the time.

But I don't trust this staff to do that yet... not benching him after that awful play was weak sauce. Gotta help guys like that get it through their stubborn heads.

There are TWO legit stars on this team, and neither is named Omar. And yet he's out there acting like the big dog every game. It's dangerous. This is NOT what I mean when I say I want 'dog' or 'edge'. This is arrogance. Or foolishness. Either way, no thanks.

Let's see what they got next game - Princeton isn't going to roll over for a butt kicking. Let's see if HU is ready to play for real now, or still jerking around. Let's see if we have leadership yet, or still padding stats. Hoping to be there for this one, see them for the first time in person. Perhaps I'll feel differently like P97 mentioned 8-)

Gotta agree Polito.
In most situations (referring to OS), I would like to say I hope to be proven wrong. Of course, in this case, we already have a couple of years of proof. :(
And yes, we gave up too many points to a one man team. I like the scrappy hustle on D that Cooks had shown today. Nice game from Estrada - looks to me like they want him to be more of a point guy who can also score. So far this year, its been Estrada scoring without the assists, or burgess with the assists and no scoring. Appears that Estrada can do both (I'm happy with that).

Assuming that our center was asymptomatic (and I have no info regarding his condition), I would think he should be back for Wednesday against Princeton.

If they're not relying on Burgess for assists, and he's not going to shoot much, he will play less than Silverio. Silverio will be the sixth man, and seventh if Iyiola comes back. He's averaging 21.1 minutes, and he will probably average over 15. Silverio is shooting threes .432, and he is tied with Cooks and Ray for the team lead with 19. For Silverio and Cooks it is 2.7 per game. For Ray it is 3.8 per game. He missed two games, and players must play in 75 percent to qualify, so he will qualify if he plays in the next games. Going into today the CAA lead is 3 per game.

Edit: The article said Cooks had 5 steals. I didn't look at steals in the box score. He had 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals, and was probably our first player to do that since Claxton had 24 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals in a 90-57 win hosting New Hampshire on February 18, 2000. I don't have information for 2001-2002, but we were a bad team and I doubt we had anybody do that in that season.

I'd agree if they struggled to win this game. But when a team leads by a lot for most of the game and scores nearly 100, giving up a lot of points will happen sometimes. Not too concerned about the D in this one because almost half of their points came from a very good player. No one else on Detroit really hurt them. And they've shown good D in other games this year so it's not part of a trend. It's more an aberration in a high-scoring game in general.

You're misreading me on this one - we are basically in agreement. Heck, I was the one on here years ago warning caution with Silverio because of his numbers at URI and his start with HU, saying I didn't see what everyone else was predicting or more to the point, wishfully thinking for him. So I have been beating the drum for years about what you are saying with Silverio now.

However, he can make shots when placed in the right position to do so. By no means am I lobbying for him to take 15 3s like he did in the Houston loss off of this Detroit game. But he has shown at other times - in spots - what he showed against Detroit, that if he's put in the right position to make shots, he can. That means they have to have a short leash on him and only allow him to take good shots instead of the shots he wants. They should actually do that with everyone, but especially with Silverio. If they do, and he can make 2-3 3s on a limited amount of shots all coming with good shot selection, that can be a plus off the bench. That's all I'm saying.

I listen to one post after another about Silverio bashing and clearly I know this is not personal and he has put this on himself. However if you listen to Speedy talk about him especially in yesterdays post presser guys you'd better resign yourself to seeing A LOT OF SILVERIO. He's going to get a lot of minutes, he will be the first guard of the bench and he can contribute and be a plus for us. I have already seen Speedy yell at him in real time after taking & missing a long three against Molloy. They're not going to let him try to be a Steph Curry but watching him this year he has upped his game I know some will hate to hear this but his stats prove otherwise exception Houston game. Also lets play the converse here and say for some untoward reason he can't play who comes in to do what he has been doing?? I want somebody to enlighten me please. Just going with what I've seen that's all.

Agree with what you said triplec. Speedy clearly stated in the press conference that Silverio is his sixth man and he wants him to come in and score. He does not want him taking bad shots and I heard the same thing vs. Molloy...Speedy clearly told Silverio that that one shot was WAY too far out.

Looking forward to getting the big guy back although I did hear he might not be ready for Princeton...fingers crossed.

This is really a default situation. Speedy and his staff know the deal with Silverio but they feel the need to have at least some production from somewhere on the bench, and aside from what they're willing to put up with in Silverio, where else would that production come from on that paper-thin bench? Cramer? Maybe, but not consistently enough yet this year and obviously not the position Silverio's filling in for. Burgess? Was showing progress before this year but has been kind of the odd man out with better guards added to the mix this year. Carlos? Too raw and young to take on a sixth man role. Is it ideal? Far from it. But it's what they have. So, Silverio's the default guy to fill that role, love it or hate it, and they have to somehow make that work a little bit, especially in games here or there when Cooks or Ray might be off.

Silverio is a good spot shooter when he is wide open. He was wide open basically the whole first half when he shot. This caused him to light it up. In the second half they covered him better which limited his shots and maybe he took 1 or 2 that probably weren't advisable. But having him in there during the 2nd half caused Detroit to have to cover him tighter which allowed Cooks to score more. Yes he isn't new and we can all say what will stop him from chucking long range or guarded 3's going forward but this is also his first year with Speedy as the head coach. We are barely into the season; let's see if Speedy can hone in his shot selection and let him be the 3rd option on the floor that the other team has to guard when he hits a few shots.
