Did he play both baseball and basketball at Hofstra? This old article mentions how he almost pursued college football http://web.yesnetwork.com/news/article. ... =news_milbHofstraHockey wrote:I thought this was one of your trick questions! He was a scholarship basketball player at Hofstra. Left after his freshman year though after he was drafted by the Mets.

Re: John Rooney
The fact that he is lefthanded will make a HUGE difference when it comes to what teams and scouts think of him. Lefties don't need Syndergaard power, even still to this day. If he's able to get hitters out, they'll overlook the velocity.

Re: John Rooney
What's Rooney's velocity? 89-92? He's a big dude, there may be some projectability in his frame that could be appealing to teams, especially from the left side.HofstraHockey wrote:The fact that he is lefthanded will make a HUGE difference when it comes to what teams and scouts think of him. Rooney's currently the 181'st draft prospect according to mlb.com, I think Cards posted his bio earlier in the thread:

MLB draft starts tonight.
Re: John Rooney
Rooney goes to the LA Dodgers in the 3rd Round of the MLB Draft.
He was ranked at 181 but was the 104th overall pick.
Projected bonus at this level is just over $500,000.
Nice job John!

Re: John Rooney
Rooney is what you call crafty lefty. He is in the mold of a Jimmy Key If he approaches that level he will have a nice career

LBP Teddy Cillis was taken in the 33rd round by the Royals. He's been a first team All-CAA player the past two seasons as a utility player, both hitting and pitching fairly well.
Re: John Rooney
What does LBP mean?

Over slot. Good for him. Good for the program, long term. Shows you CAN be a pitcher and be successful up north.
