Hofstra vs James Madison 1/9/22

Post by triplec2195 »

I'm a bit surprised this topic hasn't been posted already; https://gohofstra.com/news/2022/1/7/men ... unday.aspx

This is JMU first conference game after not having played in almost a month. Of course we come off that pathetic loss vs W&M a game that has left a bad taste in our mouths for much too long. Hopefullly our starters have been able to rehab and we come out healthy and hungry. We're a 1.5 favorite in this game from what I've seen with an over under of 148.5. Maybe a little surprising considering that JMU is 10-2. This is a big game for us to get back on the winning track and show we're the team to beat in this conference. Also putting that last game far into the rear view mirror.

Will be a tough one for us but if we're healthy I think we'll prevail.

10-2 including a home win over Virginia, so HU better be ready.

We'll see which might have a positive or negative effect for both teams - rest or rust - with JMU playing for the first time in 29 days, after four straight postponements, and Hofstra playing for the first time in 11 days, after three straight postponements.

HU better have a different approach than it had at W&M if the 3s aren't falling early. Relying solely on that if they're missing from 3 will burn them again. But maybe they'll make them today. They also better guard everyone. JMU doesn't have a standout scorer or two. Instead, they average 76.7 ppg with six different guys (three guards, three forwards) scoring between 8.7 ppg and 11.2 ppg and some other contributors.

http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2022 ... dison.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Hofstra at James Madison." Silverio (1-8) and Estrada (1-9) were our first teammates from 2010-2011 to now to attempt at least eight threes without making more than one. If it was a good event, I would look at older box scores from our annual guides, but I'm not going to.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=369231 will have statistics.

I'm hoping that Cooks (hip) and Dubar (ankle) are healed and good to go.

I know JRay has been playing, but I still think he has not been 100%. Hope that changed.

I'm very interested to see is Simmons is active. If he's not going to get playing time, I would like to at least see him in pregame warmups, etc. Maybe an indication hes not far away.

Starting lineup posted. No Cooks, Silverio (god help us) is in, I just hope he only only chucks a handful of wild 3s and doesn’t burn us too much.

Silverio committed his second foul 32 seconds in, and Burgess replaced him. We called timeout down 7-0. Dubar scored 2.

Edit: We scored 7 in 41 seconds to tie it at 9, allowed a three, and have our first lead at 13-12. Estrada has 7 points. He has no assists, and Iyiola, who entered averaging 0.6 assists, has 2. Ray has no shots and 2 turnovers.

Agreed. Get Caleb and Jaquan Carlos more minutes. Silverio is good when he is coming off the bench to shoot a few wide open 3's. Anything more than that doesn't work.

Can someone please explain this to me?

For a team that shoots (and misses) a lot of threes - why does the team clear out and run back to D when the shot goes up. We miss out on a ton of long rebounds. Few other teams do that - it’s no wonder we get out rebounded.

I thought they feel good about our D. Are they so afraid to get beat down the court that we basically give up on 2nd chance points? It’s a real problem IMO.

JMU up 44-43 at halftime.

Each team shot almost identically well: HU 17/30 (57%), JMU 17/31 (55%).

12 assists on HU's 17 buckets.

Anyone have the CODE to stop MORSE? He leads JMU with 17 pt on 6/8 fg, 3/5 from 3.

Ray has 13 but 3 fouls, Dubar has 12, Estrada has 10, and Iyiola has 9 and 8 rebounds. After having 2 assists in the first 15 minutes, Estrada is up to 6.

What a game. HU back up, 78-77, with 3:55 left.

21 lead changes and seven ties.

But where's the HU defense? JMU has been easily over 50% basically all game. Shooting 56% for the game now, 58% in the second half. Can't just hope to outscore teams. Let's if they get stops here down the stretch.

Nice win. Cant trust this team yet though, so I wont get too excited. Didnt like seeing Omar on the court at all though.

Nice win! We were the mentally tougher team down the stretch. They made mistakes and we didn’t.

Considering no Cooks and Jalen in foul trouble that is a nice win. Estrada and Dubar were huge. Hysterical that JMU announcers think they have a shot at an at large bid, did anyone else have trouble with the feed being really blurry? Reception seemed way worse than the W&M game. Good thing Tuesday (covid permitting) is on tv.

After struggling for about 36 minutes, the D finally did show up at the end as HU closes 11-3 to win 87-80. The offense carried the day all game.

HU survives a game that featured nine ties and 23 lead changes.

Congrats to Speedy on his first CAA win as a head coach!!!!

I like what I saw from Beybe - he's running the court really well and is starting to show a nice shooting touch. He's playing tough and hard.

Good all around game from Dstone. He was a real get!

Very disappointed in JC. I know he's only a freshman, but man, he has been more of a liability than a contributor.

Omar... well.......

Closed the game out on a 8-0 run.
Outrebounded JMU 35-27
Turnovers HU10 and JMU19
Assists to Turnovers HU 19-10 JUM 16-19
Kudos to Iyiola with 15 ponts and 15 boards
Estrada 20 points 7 rebounds and 7 assts
Dubar with 19 and 4 and 4
Ray played only 29 minutes because of 4 fouls
Not pretty but a gutsy win. I will take it.
