Game 16 at UNC Wilmington on January 30, 2021 at 1:00 P.M.

Post by EvanJ »

https://gohofstra.com/news/2021/1/28/me ... -uncw.aspx is titled "MBB: Hofstra Heads South To Take On UNCW." I just went on the UNCW forum of CSNBBS, and they did not start a topic about playing us yet, but they said leading scorer Jaylen Sims is out for the season, and they have at least five players injured or who left school. A fan said they should redshirt Shykeim Phillips even if he can come back, and somebody responded that the NCAA gave all players another season of eligibility, so redshirting doesn't help. Bethea is in the same situation. Can somebody clarify whether a freshman redshirting before playing gets four seasons of eligibility with the redshirt not mattering because everyone gets another season, or if players can redshirt this season and play for five seasons after?

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... ame16b.pdf is our Game Notes. The statistics comparison to "opponent" on Page 2 is wrong, so maybe it was leftover from Towson.

Jalen Ray is 25 points behind Rokas Gustys and 27 points behind Juan'ya Green and Brian Bernardi. Hopefully Ray will be 25th by the end of Sunday. Coburn has 887 points for us, so hopefully he will get to the 900s on Saturday.

https://static.caasports.com/custompage ... M#team.ind has UNCW's statistics. Sims was averaging 17.6 points and 5.3 rebounds. It will mean more playing time for sophomore Imajae Dodd, who is getting fewer minutes than last season. Dodd's role and statistics are like Dan Dwyer two seasons ago.

UNCW has not written a preview yet.

Evan, this season does not count. So if a frosh does not play, he will still have 4 seasons of eligibility left, but not 5. If he is able, nothing to lose by playing.

Right, play e’ry-body!

The W is not coming together well this far, injury riddled, covid impacts, and not getting the results desired, esp in the post. Feed the ball inside and attack that lane with a vengeance, exploit that weakness HARD, early and often, and the permiter should become wide open for the taking - then it’s a focus on knocking down the good looks.

On the opposite end, HU is nearing its full compliment of players just as we enter the most important part of the season. Should be interesting to see if HU finally has and plays the full roster now that reports are everyone is good to go, would be the first time all season.

Okay.

John Bowen and Imajae Dodd combined for 19 blocks in 247 minutes, which is exactly 1 per 13 minutes. Our leading shot blocker has 10 and our second leading shot blocker has 9, but Coburn and Cramer combined to play 916 minutes, which is 3.71 times as many minute as Bowen and Dodd for the same amount of blocks. I'm not saying we can't score by the basket, but UNCW can block shots. Bowen might be among their many injuries, but Dodd has slightly higher blocks per minute than Bowen. Their top forward is Joe Pridgen, who was Patriot League Rookie of the Year and after three games got a waiver to not need a redshirt season. He averages 11.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks.

Edit: https://uncwsports.com/news/2021/1/29/m ... pions.aspx is UNCW's preview.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... 013021.pdf is UNCW's Game Notes. They want to be called UNCW.

The all-time series is tied at 22, but there have been streaks along the way. UNCW won the first 8. We won 7 in a row and 13 of 15. We won both games last season, but UNCW won 6 of the last 10. 11 games, which is one-fourth, were decided by 3 or fewer points (one possession) or in overtime. All five overtime games, including one triple overtime and one double overtime, were decided by at least 4. They neglected to label the 2016 CAA Final as an overtime game.

Newsday shows us as a 1 point underdog? Home court advantage with no fans? This seems a bit unusual!

UNCW does have fans; I believe only around 50 or so though.

Caesars Sportsbook has us as 1 point favorites.

UNCW had 25 fans for each game last weekend.

Vegas Insider now has the line and over/under make a score of us winning 72.5-71.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=319122 will have statistics.

I like "the voice of the Seahawks" Mike Vaccaro better than other announcers. Their color announcer is Marty Feurer.

50 fans seems like a lot for them. I wonder if they have a good door prize or something.

39-36 Hofstra at the half. Not nearly a big enough lead for us not to blow in the second half. Probably lose by 15-20 knowing us in the latter stages of the game.

Kramer played great in the first half. Was all over the place. Kante is feasting. Nice to see Omar, Omar, and Zion finally.

The announcer thought he saw Coburn but said it's hard to tell who he saw because of masks.

We shot twos 13/17 = .765 and threes 4/13 = .308. Ray and Kante scored 10. Kante made 5 of 6 field goals, but had only 3 rebounds. Cramer had 7 points and led all players with 6 rebounds. Green scored 5 by making a three and a two without missing. Silverio scored 4 with two made twos and two missed threes. Masic scored 2. Burgess made 1 of 2 free throws, which were our only attempts, and didn't score in the last 16:50 of the half. He shot 0-3. We have only attempted 10 free throws in our last one-and-a-half games. Schutte didn't shoot, but he had 2 rebounds in 3 minutes. Bethea committed two fouls when we had fouls to give at the end of the half. His only attempt was an air ball three. The statistics say he entered and left at the same time, and he's in the Split Box tab, but not the Visitor Stats tab. Green had our only steal, UNCW had only 3 turnovers, and we didn't have any points off turnovers. We didn't block any shots.

UNCW had only 12 rebounds, with nobody having more than 3. Joe Pridgen led them with 11 points and 3 rebounds. Mike Okauru scored 10 and led all players with 4 assists, but he shot 4-11. Ty Gadsden, who's their leading scorer other than injured Jaylen Sims, scored 6, and John Bowen shot 3-3 to have 6 points and tied Pridgen with 3 rebounds.

Ray was the only player to play the whole half. Pridgen got 20 seconds off, and Okauru got 25 seconds off. Sub forward Imajae Dodd played only 1 minute.

Unsure why Ray and Caleb walk the ball up against that weak press. We cross half-court with 21 seconds to work the ball. Push the ball up and drive. Kante cant be stopped down low. Cramer is beasting with the offensive rebounds and put backs. Also, shoutout to Omar today. Playing very well offensively. Omar comin'

May be the best game Omar has played. Excellent drive to the hoop after hitting a three.
