Pete Gillen

One of the worst announcing performances I have ever seen in my life. He went back to back with bad and awful. I dont live on Long Island, so I dont get Newsday, and I know how so many on here are critical of their Hofstra neglect, but my goshhhhhh was this guy rooting against us. Called fouls for the refs, couldnt get peoples names correct, said the same thing over and over.. So happy we won though.

That's exactly why my Dad and I used the WRHU announcers on the HAWC. So much better than trying to listen to someone who seems to be very unprepared for a national network. Yes, I realize he is a former D1 coach, but that commentary was not a good effort. By the way, the RHU announcers were very good.

Both today and yesterday he said Speedy played under Pecora. You'd think someone would correct him after the first time

I concur- he was bad to the point of being embarrassing! One cliche after another, like a watered down Bill Raftery, without any of the charm or insight. He must have called for a double team ten times! At one point he said Speedy played for Pecora. Ugh!

However...no one's going to rain on this parade!

I think Gillen was rooting for Monmouth.

Yikes, was he really bad.

Gillen, I know him a little, and this was bad. Pete is a great guy—funny, articulate, and has a high basketball IQ—but listening to him two nights in a row was painful.

He’s the kind of guy you want to watch a game with over a beer or two and enjoy it. But listening to him broadcast a game, especially one you want to embrace, he’s just not that guy anymore.

VINCENTs - great Italian restaurant
DEER PARK - is about 45 minutes from the Hofstra campus.
WORMS - the kid has more moves than a can of worms - which is not funny once, but stupid 4-5 time
MONMOUTH campus is about 120 miles from the HU campus.

Pete would be great as the MC at local basketball awards luncheon - but not to broadcast a championship game.

I am not here to bash him, and he certainly isn't taking away what WE did down in DC, but to CBS, real fans deserved better. It was painful to listen to at times. CBS - Hire that Dylan kid from HOSTRA.

I know a lot of people probably don't agree with this but if I'm watching a game that's not being broadcast from HU like last night I always shut the sound off. I just don'v want to hear all the disingenuous babble and the announcers showing their bias. I just want to watch the freakin game. After we won I turned the volume back on, lol!!

Gillen was a candidate for the Hofstra head coaching job way back when I was SID. He lobbied me hard to gain insights. Perhaps he's still pissed off he didn't get to coach here.

Hard to argue anything here about Gillen.

But I do think Dave Ryan has done an excellent job calling pxp for the CAA tourney over the years for CBSSN. He's a real pro, honestly a higher level broadcaster than anyone ESPN would likely put on the CAA if they had it. I appreciate the excitement he brings to his calls and the inflection in his voice (his call of the Buie behind the back pass for the Coburn dunk in the 2020 final always stuck with me for some reason). He's prepared and does his best to make it feel like you're watching a major tourney, all while having to manage Gillen too.

I thought he was great. He called a great game, and was very respectful to Gillen during the broadcasts. Corrected him a few times when he called Williamson, Decady. Rico Bosco from Barstool tweeted Monday night about the Pecora/Speedy mistake, but he made it both nights. I think Dave Ryan did a great job with all he had to overcome with his broadcast partner.

Im watching the Patriot League final, and the analyst is Mo Cassara. That would have been interesting if he was assigned to the CAA/Hofstra instead.

Wow, blast from the past, kinda surprised to hear he's still doing basketball things, esp analyzing.

I want Dickie V or Gus Johnson on our games, gotta hear one of them going wild for us in the moment and our diaper dandy Edmead! :)

Go on YouTube and watch the NIT game Hofstra versus Rutgers
That was one of the best broadcast team I've ever heard
They were excited for both teams
One of the best calls was midway through the second half Hofstra was down by two and did not lead in the game I believe
They stole the ball and as they were coming down the court theball was passed to Aaron Estrada, who pulled up from about 28 feet as he let the ball go. The announcer said Hofstra has not led in this game (as the wall went through the hoop) he said until now without missing a beat.
He set up that whole call perfectly
