MBB Game 5 @FSU, Nov. 19 (Tue) 7 PM

Our next opponent, Florida State (3-1), has a NET ranking of 96, but has played a weak schedule so far. The Seminoles have wins against NKU, Rice and Tarleton State (the latter two of whom we will also face), but lost by 13 to #29 Florida.
Here's a recent breakdown of FSU:
https://www.si.com/college/fsu/florida- ... d-hamilton
Do I sense the possibility of an upset in Tallahassee?
The game will stream on ACCNX:
https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/ ... c3876d1687
Looks like you have to log in using your cable TV provider info.

Looks like ESPN+ will also carry the game. On the ESPN+ schedule of upcoming games, it lists both ACCNX and ESPN+ as carrying the game.
Note that ESPN+ will also carry the Houston game.

When I looked over their roster at least in the last game I don't believe they have a starter that's under 6'7. They're big and it remains to be seen how this difference in size will play out. It could cause us issues rebounding etc or could play into our quickness and fast break opportunities.

To that point, FSU is apparently the 2nd tallest team in the country. Should make a for an interesting contrast of styles...

For the reason that triplec and dutchPride said above, this is a great test right now after the 4-0 start. As I said after the Old Westbury win, seeing this roster in person for the first time against even a D-III team, what concerned me was that they didn't look big (either height wise or that they could be physical against some CAA opponents who might be taller and stronger). That said, after the win against Seton Hall, they spoke about their physicality in practice against each other and against Seton Hall, which was evident in that game, and it's a big part of why they won that game. So we'll see, if they can play physically even if they may not look it. But the sheer fact Florida State is another level size wise that they haven't seen yet and that they won't see for most of the season, makes this a very interesting matchup for them, to see if they can handle it. If they can, it'll be a great sign for going against bigger players they'll see at times in conference play.
From the early returns thus far, we know that they at least won't back down from anyone, which is encouraging. Florida State may prove to be too big for them, especially with Bol Bowen (although he's a thin 6-10 at 195) and Ewin (6-11, 230), but we already know that won't phase HU. They'll go at FSU and will compete hard.

Although ESPN gives HU a 22.6% chance to win (and, who cares? ESPN gave them a sub-30% chance to win against Seton Hall and UMass), Hofstra actually enters this game ranked higher by the AP than Florida State.
The Pride have one AP vote, placing them tied with Michigan and Maryland at #47 in the nation. Florida State has no AP votes.
Hofstra also got some love here:

The NET is still from last season. The NET starts in December. For now, we have to use other rankings. Florida State is 142nd in the RPI, and 90th in KenPom. KenPom expects Florida State to win 75-67 with a 75 percent chance of winning.

It is our first AP Poll point since January 28, 2019 when we were on a 16 game winning streak. I wanted to find out who gave us a vote, so I used
https://collegepolltracker.com/basketball/2024/week-3 which has this week's poll, but not the ballots yet. I am hoping that by tonight our team page will say who voted for us.
https://gohofstra.com/news/2024/11/17/m ... state.aspx is titled "Pride Headed To The Sunshine State To Face Florida State."
https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... 5game5.pdf is our Game Notes.
Florida State has not written a preview yet.
We do not use our bench much, but our percent of minutes from the bench is up a little from 24.1 percent last season to 26.4 percent this season. Last season Bryce Washington and German Plotnikov had about the same amount of starts and minutes. I counted half of their combined minutes as a starter and half of their combined minutes as a bench player.
https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=546818 will have statistics.
Edit: Mike Hlas of the Cedar Rapids Gazette in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is the voter who ranked us. His 23rd, 24th, and 25th teams did not get any other points. The five ranked teams not on his ballot include St. John's, so he thinks we are the best team in the New York City area (which includes suburbs in Connecticut but should not include UConn).

Looks like it opened at that and assuming the newspaper either didn't have time to update it before printing or doesn't check.

That website compiles all the main sportsbook; has the line opening at +6.5 and now all books they track have it at +7.5

Looking at Florida State stats they're a poor 3 point shooting team at 24% and also only shoot FT at 66%. We shoot three's at 36% and FT's 76%. This could be a very winnable game for us.

Also Jerry Deng transferred there after leaving Hampton now he has been rewarded with 14 minutes a game. Nice move!

Would assume Gadsden gets the assignment to guard Jamir Watkins, who's listed at 6'7 210. I like what I've seen from Gadsden on the defensive end so far, intrigued to see how he holds up tonight against a preseason ACC 2nd team player
Though if because of FSUs size Gadsden has to guard a more traditional big and it's left to Aranguren or Sanders to guard Watkins, foul trouble could become an issue with the size mismatch

We need to hit some threes have missed open looks so far. Also need to keep Cruz on the floor.
