2021-2022 Men's Basketball Player Plus/Minus
2021-2022 Men's Basketball Player Plus/Minus
I found that the statistics for each game have the season plus/minus who every player who played. Since Cramer is our only player who didn't play, I used our team point differential and the nine known players to calculate his plus/minus. Here they are, and I can try updating it after every game:
Silverio: +109
Estrada: +99
Ray: +93
Cooks: +86
Dubar: +77
Simmons: +50
Iyiola: +45
Burgess: +36
Cramer: +35
Carlos: +0
Of CAA players who played yesterday, Towson's Cameron Holden leads at +157.
Here's the plus/minus per 100 minutes:
Simmons: +94.3 (+50 in 53 minutes)
Silverio: +21.0
Cooks: +19.2
Ray: +16.3
Estrada: +15.4
Burgess: +14.3
Cramer: +13.6
Iyiola: +13.1
Dubar: +12.9
Carlos: +0 (the numerator is 0, so minute in the denominator are irrelevant)
We have six guards above our three forwards. Did anybody expect Silverio to be above Estrada in plus/minus per an amount of minutes? There's nothing special about "per 100 minutes," and I chose it so the amounts wouldn't all be decimals.

Thanks Evan. Didn't expect it, but maybe this will quiet some of his detractors.

IDK how this is determined and statistics can be misleading but I think in terms of Omar he seems to be judged HARSHLY and is judged subjectively not objectively.

Re: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball Player Plus/Minus
As far as Silverio goes here is my take. Omar is probably playing more this season because of injuries. With Cook out and Ray inconsistant he was needed to play extra minutes. Add to that Burgess and Carlos contributing little and Speedy had no other choice. With Cook and Ray back maybe we see him used a little differently
Re: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball Player Plus/Minus
Certainly surprising. The frustration with silverio is the number of obviously really bad shots that he takes, and naturally that is the takeaway from his game most of the time. Speedy has done a good job getting this level of play out of him and at least somewhat reducing his bad shot selection.

Yes this is exactly my thoughts with Silverio. He is a great spot shooter from 3 when open but shouldn't be shooting from 5 feet beyond the arc, shouldn't be taking a fast break 3 and shouldn't be trying to dribble and take mid range shots because that isn't his game.cactus wrote:Certainly surprising. He is shooting 35% from 3 point range and when you combine that with all these crazy shots he takes that he shouldn't he probably is shooting well over 40% when taking a normal catch and shoot 3.
Overall he is shooting 38%. So he is 3rd best on our team in 3 point shooting (not counting Cramer who is 2 for 3) but 7th out of 9th (again not counting Cramer) overall in shooting. This clearly shows he shouldn't be taking 2 point shots. Yet he continues to drive and try and take these crazy shots that just don't make sense.
It seems like he is trying to be a Steph Curry type player on the floor for us which just isn't him.
Plus he directly lost us two games by making stupid plays in the final seconds.
Re: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball Player Plus/Minus
Some credit to silverio too though if that wasn't inferred from my previous post, in way more minutes than he's ever played these are his best fg% and 3p% of his career and he does play solid defense and gets rebounds.

It's the plus/minus while the player is on the court.triplec2195 wrote: IDK how this is determined

I'm with Speedy on this. I don't put too stock into plus-minus and never have.
There are times it can be telling, but it more often can be one of the most misleading stats in basketball.

Agreed. I think Speedy rolled his eyes when someone brought it up plus/minus and he rejected it immediately.Wags wrote:I'm with Speedy on this. I don't put too stock into plus-minus and never have.

Estrada: +172
Silverio: +146
Cooks: +126
Ray: +124
Dubar: +120
Iyiola: +74
Simmons: +72
Cramer: +42

Simmons is impressive considering he averages 8.2 minutes per team game. Here are the plus/minus per 40 minutes:
Simmons: +12.5
Silverio: +8.2
Cooks: +7.5
Estrada: +7.1
Team: exactly +6.5 per game
Iyiola: +5.92
Ray: +5.88
Cramer: +5.85
Dubar: +5.6
Burgess: +3.4
Carlos: -0.3
By that measure, Estrada is a little better than our average. Drexel's Camren Wynter is +3.6 per 40 minutes on a team that is +3.4.

Re: 2021-2022 Men's Basketball Player Plus/Minus
That said, there can be a good use for +/- that we don't normally see -- while I think individual +/- can be very misleading and thus, not too useful, I do think +/- for a unit of five guys on the floor can be telling. So if you have say, three guys playing with two others vs. the same three with a different two, or two of that first five playing with a different three, however it's broken down, and the +/- is very different for the five-player units vs. each other, that might be pretty telling and useful for a coaching staff. I would like to see that somewhere, but we usually don't (not that I know of).triplec2195 wrote:Agreed. I - for one - am not surprised with Silverio so close to the top - took a beating here on these Blogs most of his career and the start of this year - some of it deserved - BUT the last 75% of this season (plus/minus) he has really played well
However - I am surprised at Dubar being so low - really thought his play goes unrecognized and his numbers would've been better
I know stats and numbers can be manipulated and they are not the end all in valuing a player - but thay are always a good start.

I think DStone doesnt take enough shots and should be involved more in the offense
They should be running some plays for him

Not the end all be all of stats, however with a large enough sample size it becomes more valid. One thing that it does confirm is that the 9th and 10th players should not see a single minute of basketball during the conference tournament unless its garbage time. Its time to roll with and stick to that 8 man rotation with the top 8 names on that list. Asking for trouble with the other 2 on the floor.EvanJ wrote:Total:

3 games in 3 days though you often go deeper. They are not the clear best team like 19-20 when they barely used the bench, also no one really got in foul trouble that tournament. Carlos gave them great minutes vs Arkansas. Burgess can defend. Both are ball handlers which you can never have enough of. I would be surprised if they don't get some minutes.

The 3 games in 3 days thing is so overblown. These guys are young, not that far removed from playing many hours of AAU ball often.cactus wrote:3 games in 3 days though you often go deeper. Two years ago, they used the bench less - not more - as the tourney went on and hardly used it at all by the third game. The time to get guys minutes and experiment was long before March. Now it's about winning a championship, and that usually means putting your regular rotation on the floor as much as possible.
2020 CAA quarterfinals (18-point win):
starters played 39, 39, 36, 36, 28
bench played 7, 7, 6, 5, <1
2020 CAA semifinals (14-point win):
starters played 37, 39, 28, 40, 38
bench played 12, 5 ,1
2020 CAA finals (9-point win, third game in three days):
starters played 40, 40, 40, 37, 37
bench played 3, 3, <1
