Even if you pay players, there’s no guarantee that they will help you win.

Exactly, and if that keeps happening over time, you become Hartford or St. Francis.stuball888 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 9:03 pm But if you dont pay your players now they will leave to greener pastures
then what is left may be lesser quality and every year will be a rebuilding year
Lets face it Stu this is the new NORM and every year is in fact a rebuilding year with some years requiring more rebuilding then others. All contingent on how many players you can retain. This is a big loss considering we had the makings of a competitive team coming back with Edmeade already in the fold. The kid not only scored 14+ a game but rebounded and knows the system here and has chemistry with Davis.stuball888 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 9:03 pm But if you dont pay your players now they will leave to greener pastures

Fresh start? He played with us one season and started every game!Wags wrote: ↑ Sure, it's far from Estrada leaving, but he did average 14, 5, and 4. And with over 360 other D-I schools out there, 60% of which were ranked higher than Hofstra this year, I can see someone paying him. He only needs one and he may just want a fresh start elsewhere.

Yes, one year is a lot in this new landscape, especially with only two years left. I don't mean a fresh start in terms of getting playing time elsewhere that he didn't get here. I mean a fresh start in terms of what he may think would be a better opportunity for him overall with only half of his college career left to find that.Flying Dutchmen wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 10:15 am Fresh start? Only this past season? That's been the norm forever.Flying Dutchmen wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 10:15 am As a fan, I don’t know how you can support this, and looking at attendance this past season, we haven’t.
In college basketball these days, that's pretty good (half-joking).
Possibly but it seems he'd have already heard of better possible situations to change his mind (and may be deciding now) after it was already announced he was staying. Usually, you test the waters and the announcement of returning comes after, not the other way around. You don't usually see two announcements that someone's staying, so it would be very out of the norm for him to return now, but anything's possible.
It doesn't have to be like Estrada, Dubar, Carlos. It could be an intermediate step up, like an A10 or MVC school, or even a WAC, Big West, or Ivy school that may pay more than Hofstra, which it seems doesn't have much NIL resources (or no?). That type of step up next year could then be worked into a power school for his senior year.
That's the key to me. Clearly the agent who leaked the info to Goodman got his claws in Jean. The only question is does the agent actually have more lucrative offers from other schools, or is he a predatory asshole trying to exploit Jean and the kid fell for it? And I wouldn't be shocked at all if there actually were a10 level and lower high-major level schools interested in Jean... he was in a select small group of players in the entire country to compile that many pts, rebs, and assists.
Any of the above is possible, although the last one may be the least so - I don't think Hofstra would promise him something that they knew they couldn't deliver on, but who knows? ALL of it speculative as is the possible idea that he was ready to return until saw a fellow former Iona guard reach the Final Four. Obviously, he's not Clayton Jr. but he believes in himself, saw Clayton Jr.'s path from the same starting point and maybe believes he too can make a significant jump with improvement and on a bigger stage while getting paid more (even if that doesn't mean power conference next season).dutchPride86 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 11:33 amThat's the key to me. The only other plausible scenario besides the agent promising Jean more money elsewhere would be that Hofstra promised him X amount of money, and a week later realized they couldn't pay him what they promised

Forget it now. Committed to St. Joe's.
It was always going to be that way in this landscape. Many successful players will move up, from mid-majors to power schools, from low-majors to mid-majors, and from D2/D3 to low-and-mid-majors.dutchPride86 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 12:36 pm If you don't think Jean can land at a high-major school, just look at where some of the CAA guys are starting to sign:
- Rashad King: LSU
- Cole Hargrove: Providence
- Kobe Magee - FSU
- Yame Butler: Butler
We are the minors leagues for the power conferences now, nothing more. So I guess its logical we'll have to look into even lower levels to fill rosters now. Hell Iona just dipped down into D3 and signed a kid from my alma mater Brandeis. NEVER thought I'd see the day that happened
