But on the whole, passing and cutting as good as it's been all year. First 4 min of 2nd half will be critical don't let Towson get any closer

Jean picking up his 3rd and 4th fouls in 90 seconds not exactly what we had in mind...Cards wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 8:56 pmAgree / need to come out strong at beginning of second half.dutchPride86 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2025 8:53 pmJust like Charleston. GIGANTIC corner 3 there from Gadsden to get this back out to 5. He's shooting with much more confidence from the corners
Re: MBB Game 18 @Towson Jan 16 (Thu) 7 PM
Well that was no fun…

19 second half points. No field goals in the last 4 plus minutes.

No idea why Speedy pulled Gadsden right after that 3. And coincidentally or not Hofstra didn't make a single FG after that. Way too much Robinson, no Decady in the 2nd half, sat Jean for far too long too (4 fouls or not).
But that's not why they lost. Neither Jean or Cruz made a single FG the final 9 minutes of that game. Can't win if neither of your "stars" can make a shot. Too many offensive rebounds allowed, too many turnovers, same as always. Towson adjusted defensively to Hofstras pick and roll, Hofstra never countered. And Hofstra really lost the game at the end of the 1st half when they let Towson back in it anyway
We just don't have the guy to consistently drag the offense through the doldrums. Gonna be a lot more games like this to come

Not a bad loss considering the opponent and being on the road. Was a bad loss considering they were up 18, outrebounded (of all CAA programs) Towson (who has historically always been tough on the glass), shot almost 7% better, and only managed 21 pts over the final 23 minutes
What's up with Sanders? Played 2 min at Northeastern, didn't play the next two games after he was "going through some stuff" (whatever that was), comes back tonight in a big game against the preseason favorite, and plays 1 min? Just 6-8 pts from him tonight instead of 0 and maybe they win? How has he gone from a starter to just 3 total minutes over the past four games? I don't get it.

I didn't see this game but looking over the stats I see as a big difference in us getting called for 22 fouls and they only pick up 14. As a result they go to the FT line 23 X to our 6. Clearly the difference in this game from a points standpoint. Also Speedy in his post presser referencing Jean"his best player" said that he thought the fouls called on him were unfair. Really not trying to play the "bad ref card" but pointing out what is very evident.
It's speaking some volumes when one of your starting players in the past can get put in the game for 1 minute when you're desperate for a scoring guard and some offense. How has Sanders worked himself into the DOGHOUSE or has he??
I don't want to pile on about Robinson but he's a shooting guard not a PG. He dribbles too much and at times(often)takes bad ill advised shots. We're better off with a healthy head screwed on straight Sanders!

Going to try to find a big-picture positive here the day after what should have been a big win and was allowed to slip away for a tough loss...
Other than being defense first and trying to find enough offense to win, we kind of still don't know EXACTLY what this team is yet, especially if Sanders may once again become a key part of it. That'll come in February. So, to take a positive so far for D.C., they beat UNCW, went toe-to-toe with Charleston and with Towson on its floor, and even had Towson down big. W&M was a disaster but I'm not sure yet that despite their 5-0 start, they won't collapse before March. So, although there is a LOT to improve offensively, they have at the very least mostly been competitive, the defense remains a very reliable constant that keeps them in games (even against some of the CAA's best), and there is still hope that they can at least compete and give it a decent shot in D.C. if they can somehow just find another 8-10 points of offense.

I think this team is just about where I thought it would be at this juncture. This loss was real hard to take though. We looked like a top 20 team in the first half, firing on all cylinders and a bottom 20 team in the second.
The loss of Aranguran killed us and yes there were some ticky-tack fould but we had a big lead and we should have protected it.
Once again we'll need to bounce back against a tough team on Monday, to get us to .500. The League gets much easier after Drexel.

All of the above comments are spot on. Hard to swallow a loss when you had an 18 point lead. I also don't understand some of Speedy's substitutions as mentioned in this thread. Seems to me that the team has been out of sync since the Temple game, but not sure why.

Sanders being benched has not been an issue at all in my opinion. In fact, without him the team has actually settled into real roles and has an identity now. German and Farmer make far more of an impact when it comes to defense and effort than Sanders did. What I wish Speedy would do now is tighten the rotation even more, raising Farmer and Decdays minutes at the expense of Robinson. If you want to straight swap Robinson for Sanders though I'd be ok giving that try, cannot play both of those guys under any circumstances though.
Cruz Davis is playing though, but he has scored in double figures just once in 5 conference games. He hasnt made a single three in 3 of 5 conf games. And maybe most glaringly, after attempting 3+ FTs 9 times in non conference, Cruz is yet to take more than 2 FT attempts in a single conference game. The extra 6-8 points we need are right there, he just has to find his game again (the same way Jean seems to have the last 3 games)
The glass half full would be that yes the schedule has been brutal and these games have been close lately, but I fear this team is digging too big a hole to make up the ground to finish in the top 4 (esp with the way W&M and Elon are playing). Hell we lose the Drexel game and we're gonna be talking about if we can avoid finishing in the bottom 4, let alone the top 4

Re: MBB Game 18 @Towson Jan 16 (Thu) 7 PM
Sanders has had regular minutes in just one game (33 vs. W&M), including limited minutes in one game (19 vs. Quinnipiac), and basically not playing in four games otherwise (two DNPs, 2 min, and 1 min) since that Temple game. Seeing them having to fill that key starting role, and the effect that has on the rest of the rotation down the line, it's easy to understand why things have been out of sync - but that's only offensively. Defensively, they've maintained what they had, and if they're going to compete in D.C., it'll have to be based on defense even if the offense is improved. You obviously want to be good at both ends of the court, but having a defense-first identity and trying to add enough offense is an easier fix than scoring well but not having a good defense and trying to suddenly switch that on for March.
Re: MBB Game 18 @Towson Jan 16 (Thu) 7 PM
Perhaps, and I agree, they've not only maintained what they had defensively but have maybe even improved even more defensively.dutchPride86 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 12:40 pm Sanders being benched has not been an issue at all in my opinion. But it's still an adjustment with Sanders missing to find consistency, especially offensively. Even if we see this continue and see that Sanders isn't part of the rotation later on how he was before, and if that ultimately works out better for the team, it hasn't yet offensively. Not that Sanders wasn't inconsistent himself but I think he gave them the potential of a little more offensive firepower, and so far, they haven't adjusted to replacing that and the offensive effects that's had down the line (except for what Farmer was able to provide offensively in the UNCW win).
