Flying Dutchmen Fans

Started watching HU the year before I enrolled so I saw some of Steve Nisenson's games in 64-65. I could write a book report because I saw just about every home game except when they were "vagabonds" for a couple of years under BVK. Traveled to many road games during college years going to St.Joe's and Temple (under Harry Litwak -who looked a little like the Owl) HU played Temple at their Gym which was on the 2nd floor and was so small their zone stretched across the entire court - sat only 600 with seats only on one side.
HU had decent teams while I was there with Wandy Williams from Malverne (who I played intramurals with while he sat out because of transfer rules, Curtis Fisher who played with Wandy and became a Hempstead town official also was on that team - we lost to Don Gault's team (he was HU QB). The old ECC was great with St.Joe, Temple and LaSalle although we had next to no success against any of them.
Made the 2 NCAA tourney trips to Hartford (Bernard Tomlin's team) and the Palestra (Laurel and Co) losing a heartbreaker to ND and Duck Williams.
Although I was going to almost every HG and the local road trips, finally purchased season tickets when the Mack opened (although I never missed a game since Jay became Coach) and have been season ticket holder ever since.
I was disappointed when Jay left (understandable). There was a great debate on the boards back then about why he would leave and go to Rutgers - and then Nova swept in...
TP never should have left - he committed career suicide (said it at the time). I love the Rose Hill Gym for it's history, but I'm not a 17 year old who wants something alot more modern.
Was thrilled with the Welsh hire and then he had to go ruin everything!
Have seen many outstanding players, Wandy, Barry White (6'5 Center), Rich Laurel (incredible senior season), Tomlin, Irving, David Taylor to name some of the "oldies". You guys know the more modern ones.
I'm happy with the CAA - took along time to establish some of these rivalries - would hate to go backwards (MAAC) although I do enjoy playing them non-con.
As far as Coach goes - we are never going to win anything because he doesn't coach D (said it when he was hired), there is not enough front court depth, and he insists on playing as many guards as he can find.

I also had the pleasure of seeing Steve Nisenson excel for Hofstra. If the 3 point shot existed, his scoring record would probably never be broken. Also a 90% free throw shooter.
I was 13 years old and accompanied by my dad who graduated Hofstra in 1943. Dad was a president of the alumni association and a winner of the Estabrook award a Hofstra distinguished alumnus award, (Other winners a lot more famous than my Dad are Francis Ford Coppola and Nelson DeMille I believe.)
Every Thanksgiving morning we would watch the Hofstra - CW Post football game. Dad also grew to love lacrosse.
For my college years I lost touch with HU sports a bit since I was a D1 athlete for Columbia.
My brother, sister and I all graduated from Hofstra Law and I started to pay attention to HU again.
In fact when Hofstra plays Columbia in basketball, I live and die with the Dutchmen.
I lost my father in 2010 and since then I think my father has taken over my brain since I now watch all things Hofstra.
One of my most enduring memories of my father was going to games with Dad at 13 years old and continuing the tradition in his 70's and 80's. I think he is still watching closely from above!
