Hofstra moved up to 5th in three-point field goal percentage and 8th in three-pointers made per game, but Hofstra doesn't lead the area in those categories because Iona is 3rd in three-point field percentage and 1st in three-pointers made per game.

I don't know, we have the strangest schedule this year. Look at the schedules of the teams who we played, specifically Jacksonville, Jackson St, USF, NC ST, App St - All these teams have played each other. How do Hathaway and Mihalich create a schedule? Is this similar to what Ruland was pulling at Iona before he got fired, is that how we are recruiting better out of state? Not questioning the ethics, just curious about the process.

I'm not sure what our schedule says about our team other than we can take care of business against the weaker teams. Not to be a jerk, because we were in a similar position the past two years, but some of these teams really suck, not fielding D-1 caliber talent. The easy schedule has allowed our transfers to knock off the rust which is a good thing though, and to get a chance to run Mihalich's offensive system. Our team is more flawed than I imagined we would be, but hopefully we get Kone and Gustys back after the holiday break in the schedule and we can match up a little better with the bigger teams.

I know ZERO about the process, but I'd imagine that group of coaches knows each other from somewhere, and that's how they all end up playing one another. Little more involved than that, obviously, but you get where I'm going with it.

Stu, the only real bad loss under Joe was the one I mentioned, losing by almost 20 at FDU last year.

In terms of the SOS, I am totally for the quantity of Ws right now rather than the quality of competition. Coppin State is playing a MUCH harder schedule than Hofstra. How do you think that's helping them (aside from collecting some big checks from it)? Losing by 40 every game isn't going to get anyone to come, regardless of who you're playing. A 20+ win season, regardless if you're playing Cupcake U (a Bill Edwards term there) 30 times a year gets you into a tournament somewhere. Maybe it's the NIT? You get wins, people start showing up, your attendance is good, you get to host games. Hosting an NIT game this year would do so much more than losing to Kansas on opening night. Even having some CBI games or something, you can still mix in the occasional big time game to draw some interest and hope that you can pull an upset.

Many of these games were set in some sort of a "pod" from one of the lesser post season tournaments. Thats why we have played these schools including NC State. We also picked up a pretty nice paycheck for these games...

I have no idea or clue what type of monetary benefit we get from playing a team like NCS as part of our early season schedule. Just curious, what type of "check" does HU get, and does it go to the university, the athletic dept, or MBB team??

I heard the payout for this "Pod" of games was in the neighborhood of $150k...It's probably budgeted and is included on the revenue side of the department's ledger

All checks are made payable to Hofstra University, regardless of who actually gets the money. Some schools have their athletics dept. separate, but those are the schools that are pulling in major revenue (which is not Hofstra). After that it's just bookkeeping. From the looks of things, the basketball team gets what it needs to operate successfully- while they aren't quite on the charter plane for each trip level yet, I don't think they're necessarily being hindered when it comes to recruiting or paying coaches or forced to schedule like Coppin State or Incarnate Word does (IW was quoted in an article the NCAA put out as saying they fly Southwest so they don't have baggage fees). Those schools I believe were getting in the $350k range for guarantees.

That being said, with softball, we flew Southwest for the same reason. Doesn't seem like much, but $25 per person for ~20 people for 6 flights each year, now you're talking $3,000, which for non-revenue sports is a pretty big amount. $3,000 is the difference between getting all your girls new gloves each year or having them bring their own (which some programs do). That's big when it comes to recruiting. Softball isn't a great example at Hofstra, because they are very well funded (hell, they paid for the bullpen catcher to travel, which some MLB teams don't even do!).

Incarnate World got $85,000 plus some expenses like a team meal to play and beat Nebraska. NJIT got $90,000 to beat Michigan

I always knew playoffs paid well, and football games were over the top $$$$$, but I did not realize these preconference MBB games could be so lucrative for a school.

You mean a preseason tournament, and the games against Jacksonville, North Carolina State, South Florida, and Jackson State were part of the Global Sports Invitational, in which all five schools played the others. Appalachian State was not in the Global Sports Invitational. They played Hofstra and Jacksonville but not Jackson State, North Carolina State, or South Florida.

Ah, so Hofstra is in an exempt "tournament", so those games only count as 2 of the 29 they can play during the regular season. http://www.goglobalsportsmanagement.com ... am-events/

Sunday scores:

UCONN beats Coppin State by 21 (I guess HU showing against Coppin says something)

Wofford beats NC State (go figure!)

Florida beats Jacksonville - Jacksonville scores a TOTAL of only 34 pts
