Cascione is an all-round athlete. He was nominated for several football awards as a defensive back and running back, and he played shortstop as well. And in basketball, he was Newsday's Suffolk County Player of the Year.

https://www.smithtown.k12.ny.us/News/Mi ... ficent.htm

From Newsday:

Suffolk Player of the Year: Michael Cascione, Smithtown West, G, 6-2, Sr.

There’s a reason why Smithtown West coach Mike Agostino describes Michael Cascione as “generational.” And he isn’t wrong.

The captain averaged 24.1 points, 11.1 rebounds, 5.2 assists (with a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio) and 3.0 steals in his final season with this team, all while averaging 25 minutes per game. He shot 53.5% from the field.

Cascione, who scored 1,383 points and saw the Bulls go 81-11, win three league titles and make three Suffolk finals across his four seasons, helped them capture the first county and Long Island titles in program history this season.

“Having him on my side is the best,” Agostino said. “He’s so tough, skilled, but above all that, he’s so unselfish.”

Cascione stepping up in the big moments wasn’t confined to the championship games, either. Against teams that made or won the semifinal round — Baldwin and Half Hollow Hills West, plus two meetings with Deer Park and three with Half Hollow Hills East — he averaged 27 points.

Smithtown West played West Islip in a playoff game without Cascione. It was something Agostino hadn’t done “in a very long time,” reminding him just how uniquely special Cascione is.

“(Winning a county title) doesn’t just happen because we showed up,” Agostino said. “It happens because we worked so hard at practice for four months. He’s the catalyst for that. He checks off every box.”

Speedy can sign one more. Saving the last slot for late June or early July or is he done?

This would be my best guess at the current depth chart for this roster based solely off their past production/reported prospect profiles. Love the frontcourt size for this starting lineup and intrigued at the way Speedy can mix and match the guards off the bench to go smaller. Still concerned about depth at forward though, an injury to either DeCady or Thomas might be crushing

I would have to agree with this even though Cascione was the Suffolk player of the year and scored 27 points a game a few years back we had the kid Aiden Best from Woodmere Academy who scored 29 a game and was a good looking player but at the end of the day was just a walk on. All of these signings still probably leaves us with 2-3 more scholarships to offer.

If this recruiting site is to be believed, D1 programs can have only 15 players and 15 scholarships, but some of those scholarships can be "partial" awards:

NCAA Basketball Scholarship Limits

Starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, the NCAA eliminated most D1 scholarship limits, enabling all sports to distribute scholarships more flexibly among athletes. These changes impacted baseball (sic) recruits in the following ways:

1. D1 men’s basketball programs are allowed to offer 15 scholarships, increased from 13.

2. D1 men’s basketball will have a maximum roster limit of 15 players.

3. D1 men’s basketball, once a headcount sport, will now be classified as an equivalency sport, which means programs can now offer a mix of partial and full-ride scholarships.

https://www.ncsasports.org/mens-basketball/scholarships

The reference to "baseball" looks like an error to me.

Love to finally see some needed additions, and a needed WING! IMO these guys should provide quality depth and quality scout ability - iron sharpens iron. Eager to see how the last spot is utilized.

I remain concerned about the coaching staff and the gap of Parrotta, specifically in coaching bigs - I do not have confidence in anyone currently on staff to do what TP did to the level he did - guy routinely turned sub-par to marginal post players at best into high quality starters / impactful and productive bench support

And this is coming from someone who's been highly skeptical of the bigs we've brought in and TP's ability to get them up to par - yet he proved himself every single time - failing to see who on the existing staff is going to do that - and although I am very happy for him and imagine he absolutely deserves the boost, but I'm highly skeptical of the promotion from within being some magical value add as it doesn't add anything new to the program - zero fresh eyes, zero new perspective, zero new energy, no new strategy - without a new hire we miss out on a big opportunity IMO

That said, I suppose the counter is we maintain consistency, Speedy is still the man in charge, and the overall approach obviously produced success. They deserve the chance to show it's the right call. And as we discussed at dinner, the age of the 4-5 year patient team build is long gone. They'll have 1 season to show their way is still right. :P
