Fall Sports

Post by ProudofPride »

All of our fall sports teams deserve a big shout out today, especially the men's soccer team who just capped off Hofstra's undefeated night with a 2-1 win over a nationally ranked (#15) Syracuse team. Women's soccer finally got their first win of the season, shutting out Columbia 2-0. Field hockey beat Vermont 4-2, and Volleyball beat both Duquesne and Kent State 3-1.

Women's team have another good night, going 3-0 collectively. Field Hockey beat previously undefeated Rider 2-1. Rider is coached by HUFH jr Colby Hussong's parents, so it'll be nice for the Hofstra player to have bragging rights at the dinner table. Volleyball opened up the Hofstra-Asics invitational with a 3-1 win over Princeton. At times, the team is painfully young, but they have potential to be very good in the coming years. Women's soccer was on the winning end of the Long Island rivalry, beating Stony Brook 2-1, and extending their winning streak to 5 games. I've been largely unimpressed with goalkeeper Frederieke Mehring the past couple of games (mainly FDU and Yale), but I'm glad our offense has taken over on her no-so spectacular nights. With this win, HU is currently 2-0 against SBU, as Volleyball swept them a few days ago.

Women's soccer just lost in OT to a previously winless Boston University team… BU's best performance was their last game, a 1-1 tie against a CCSU team that Hofstra beat 4-0 a few games ago without Leah Galton. I have no words. Not the team you want to break a 5 game winning streak to.

Surprised he hasn't played either Ashley Wilson (transfer from Miss. St.) or Jenna Borresen (who played a bit early on last year), at least in the non-conference games.

O)n a positive note, Emily Mansur is doing a very good job with the womens volleyball team. After losing her front line to graduation She has mixed in some returning players and some freshmen to pick up the slack. Do I expect them to win the CAA ,no but this team could surprise a few teams. Towson, UNCW and C of C are all very good teams. Their comeback win over UC Davis was incredible.

Nice win for the volleyball team today, 3 set sweep over Georgia. Hofstra's first win over an SEC team since 2002. This team only has 2 seniors, and neither of those two seem to be major contributors to the team, so this team should be really good in the coming years.

Seemed like a great crowd for the men's soccer game last night, at least on the live video. Announced attendance was over 1000.

On the women's side of things, the team rebounded nicely after their poor performance against BU in their last game. Today, they beat Fordham 3-1. Fordham is very good this season, and prior to today, had only allowed 4 goal total. One of Hofstra's goals today was an own goal, it almost looked like Fordham's goalie dropped the ball she saved right into the back of the net, but it was actually a Fordham defender that headed it in.
Mehring was pulled with about 15 minutes left in the game in favor of Ashley Wilson, who finally saw her first minutes for Hofstra. Mehring made zero saves, but didn't have to, as Fordham didn't have a shot on goal the whole time Mehring was in goal. Ashley Wilson for the most part looked good, finishing with 3 saves and 1 goal allowed.
Next game for the women is on the 25th, and will be a huge game. It's the CAA opener at William and Mary, who's currently ranked 25th in the nation. Jill Ellis, W&M alum and head coach of the world champion US women's national soccer team will be in attendance.

Another good day for our women's team, going 3-0 on the day. Women's soccer beat Elon 2-0 on an own goal and a goal from Leah Galton, who became Hofstra's all-time leading scorer in the game against William and Mary. Volleyball played what was probably their worst match of the season, and still managed to beat Elon 3-2. They looked awful, communication wasn't there whatsoever, and they continue to have an excessive amount of errors. Credit to the young team team for pulling it together to squeak out the win. And field hockey beat Yale 4-1, the team help Yale completely without a shot until about 2 minutes left in the game. It's been the team'a Achilles heel to give up late goals, and Carys Swan went without a save (the only shot on goal was the one that scored, and Yale only made two shots total), but the team still had a dominating win, and a 6 game winning streak.

Mens and womens teams have enough firepower to contend for CAA titles. They are coached by the steady hands of Rich Nuthall and Simon Riddenhough. Now onto volleyball. Dont get down on the inconsistant play. When you lose your entire front line, the CAA players of the year and the CAA tournament MVP you need time to fit players in so they can learn their roles. Emily Mansur has done an incredible job. This team was picked to finish either 4th or 5th. I see them contending for a title. Now onto Field Hockey. kathy DeAngelis has probably her best team since she has been here. She has a plethora of international players. some who are very young. The fact that we dominated an IVY league school speaks volumes. The CAA for years has been about the 4th best conference in the NCAAs. The fact that we also will compete with Delaware for a title with sophs and freshmen playing big roles means this team should be good for years to come.

Current RPIs are pretty good! Men's Soccer is 19, putting us 3rd in the CAA behind Elon and UNCW (11 and 12 respectively). Women's Soccer is 28, first in the CAA with the next closest being UNCW at 47. Field Hockey is 21, 2nd in the CAA behind Delaware (14), and JMU is next behind us at 23. RPIs haven't yet come out for volleyball. In the national polls that came out today, Men's Soccer is 23 (NSCAA Poll), and the women are receiving votes, putting them at 32. In the NSCAA's regional polls, the men are 3rd in the Midwest Region (it makes no sense to be in that region, but whatever They were also 3rd last week). Elon is 1st and UNCW is 5th. The women are 1st in the Mid-Atlantic Poll, and were 4th last week. W&M is 4th, Northeastern is 5th, JMU is 6th, and UNCW is 9th.

3 players were recognized by the CAA. Leah Galton is the WSOC POW, Hannah Klemm is the VB Offensive POW, and Simca Schoen is the FH POTW.

There may be three fall teams having better overall years but what volleyball is doing under Emily mansir is remarkable. They lost their best three players.

I have said this all along that she is ma very underrated coach. I fear we may lose her to a bigger school in the near future. This was suppossed to be a rebuilding year. I think we were picked forth in the CAA this year. There is still a long way to go but this team is resilient. They can play poorly but still find a way to win. They have 7, 5 set victories this year. This has to do with adjustments from game to game by Emily.

In a drenching rain Hofstra field Hockey beats Fairfield University 9-1. Now fairfield is not a good team but we have been blowing out teams on our schedule. We outshot fairfield 36-3. This after limiting Yale to just two shots in our last game with zero shots until the last two minutes.

Women's soccer loses 1-2 to UNCW in overtime. The same player scored both goals for UNCW, and literally took half of the team's shots (6 of 12, with 4 of those 6 being on target). We apparently couldn't figure out to guard her better. Hofstra has the highest RPI in the conference (28) and UNCW was next at 47, plus we were receiving votes in the national poll. UNCW hasn't loss since August. First conference loss and first home loss for the team. It wasn't a bad loss since UNCW is also highly regarded, but still a very frustrating loss. The weather was pretty brutal, and Simon did say that we got the bad side of the coin flip for overtime and had to go against the wind. Beating CofC on Sunday will be crucial.
