I don't envy the ticket office having to sell the hope of being one of the better feeder schools that still (for now) has a chance at an auto-bid to the NCAA tournament just to get smacked in the mouth by a team they can't compete with because their best players transferred out.
Fans already know the deal with NIL and the portal. They're either going to buy tickets or not and don't need to be sold on anything by the box office.

If a program is a feeder school, it's because it's developing talent like Estrada or Dubar. If that talent is good enough to be key pieces in programs like this year's Alabama team, they're also good enough to be dangerous in the NCAAT for a year or two before those developing players transfer out (i.e. two years ago, Hofstra might have been a dangerous team to pull off an upset in the NCAAT in Estrada's last year, if they would have made it). If it were a program that would only get smacked in the mouth, they wouldn't be developing good enough talent to be a feeder school in the first place.

Without being able to build off the players you've developed, they can't really compete with a high major team. Bringing in some exciting players for a year or two and a first round exit is the apex for Hofstra and many of the other mid majors in the current landscape (even if I would have gladly taken that finish in many of the previous years). In the tournament it will lead to less upsets and more calls to end auto bids. Hofstra was not all that dangerous last year, but may have been this year had Estrada stayed and they added a quality big. Then maybe they could have given a 4 seed or whatever a really tough game. Also keep in mind, in this new landscape the big schools are going to get better than they were previously, as they're focusing on transfers rather than high schoolers now.

I think we all knew that being doomed to purgatory was where it was going. But it happened really fast.

It depends on who you can get, from where, and when. For instance, by the time he played his only year in D-I (after playing in D-II), Jack Gohlke was already too old to be developed and poached but for this one year, he led Oakland over Kentucky. And Kentucky wasn't ripe for the taking only because of their usual young, one-and-done type of recruits. Their top and fourth leading scorers were older transfers themselves. Those two were Kentucky's leading scorers against Oakland and they still lost.

Being lucky enough to find a D-II diamond in the rough (like Oakland did) is just one way for mids to combat being poached but there are others.

Athletic bigs don't seem to fit Speedy's system.

Not real happy with Wilmoth - Zero sense of loyalty to a program who gave him a scholarship and delivered nothing. It's not like he got a raw deal here. BULL SPIT!

Only fans are loyal. College, pro, doesn't matter. Players and coaches will always do what's best for themselves.

Not all fans are loyal and not all players and coaches are not. How would Wilmoth know what things would be like for him at HU when he never put the uniform on. He certainly would have been given plenty of opportunity here based on the current state of our roster. According to the article he has ties in that area.

Yes this annoys the average fan but I really believe that Wilmoth leaving may be a blessing in disguise because honestly what kind of resume did he bring here. He played sparingly for Butler maybe because he was always hurt and partially because there were better players getting minutes over him. I don't think we should pine over his exit because I don't think he was going to be a major piece of the puzzle.

Our program needs some good news FAST! Hopefully the dam breaks soon. Kids are probably waiting to see who comes before they commit. Right now the roster is pretty barren.

Moe Odum a sophomore guard playing for Pacific in the WCC is meeting with Hofstra via Zoom. He's from the Bronx. https://twitter.com/SSN_Hofstra/status/ ... 2104364225 Could he be our first transfer?

Moe Odum stats. Must be a dish the ball and defensive guy. Not a very good shooter (Speedy can work on that)

Maybe he’s tired of losing. Team went 0-16 in the Sun Belt Conference.

Wow - 0-16 is brutal. I'm sure thats part of the reason for transferring. My shooting comment was based on 39% and 28% from the floor and 3pt, respectively.

Bottom line is I trust Speedy's ability to ID talent and his assessment that he can improve someone's playing effectiveness and shooting ability (as we have seen over the last few seasons).

Anthony Dell'Orso has entered the transfer portal. Campbell is losing a good player here.

That now leaves just Brzovic, Trazarien White, and Landon Glasper as the only 3 returning players of the 15 that were named to all-conference teams this year
