Hofstra alum Mike D'Amato, a safety on the Jets' Super Bowl-winning team, died on Nov. 22 from cardiac arrest. He was 82.

Newsday has a detailed obituary behind its paywall, but here's an article about Mike that everyone can access:

Mike sounds like a great guy. Did anyone here ever meet him?

My condolences to his family.

Here is Hofstra's tribute to Mike D'Amato:

Making it to the NFL from a small school like Hofstra was a great achievement. But I think his success in lacrosse was just as impressive. He didn't start playing the sport until college and became an All-American.

Several years later, Doug Shanahan attained similar success in both sports. He was a lacrosse All-American and the first Tewaaraton Award winner, and also played briefly with the Jets:

Great achievement to be so accomplished in both sports. May Mike's memory be a blessing.
