MBB: Game 13 - vs. Manhattan (Sun 12/22/19 noon)

Post by Wags »

Non-conference schedule wraps up before it gets serious with CAA play next.

A win over the Jaspers and a 9-4 record would be a decent way to head into that.

Manhattan hasn't played much (four fewer games than the Pride, with a 4-4 record). This is their first game in 8 days and first on the road in 15 days.

Jaspers won at Elon, 69-64. One common opponent to date: Manhattan lost 65-47 at Stony Brook, which lost at Hofstra, 71-63.

A 73-63 Hofstra win is expected (line: HU by 10; O/U: 135.5)

https://gohofstra.com/news/2019/12/20/m ... ftime.aspx is Hofstra's preview titled "MBB: Pride Hosts Manhattan In Final Non-Conference Game; Teddy Bear Toss At Halftime." It mistaken says Nehemiah Mack has 2.6 assists per game to pace Manhattan." Samir Stewart averages 2.9. He's missed 1 game, but Hofstra lists him as Manhattan's leading scorer, so if he's played enough to qualify for points, he's played enough to qualify for assists. We are 23-42 (.354) against Manhattan, who is our fourth most played opponent behind Delaware (91), Drexel (89), and Towson (69). Our other opponent we have played at least 50 times is Wagner, who we're 35-18 (.660) against. Northeastern is our sixth most played opponent, and UNCW is our seventh most played opponent and our most played opponent who is in the CAA but wasn't in the America East.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... game13.pdf is Hofstra's Game Notes. At his current 16.9 points, he would need six more games to pass Norman Richardson for tenth. Our sixth game from now is January 9 at Northeastern, and it will have our latest start time of a game in the Eastern time zone at 8:00 P.M. for CBS Sports Network. It says something I tweeted about a couple of weeks ago, which is that we lead Division I in free throw percentage for 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 combined. After shooting free throws over .700 in five of our first six games, we shot them under .700 in four consecutive games that totaled 32-54 (.593).

https://gojaspers.com/news/2019/12/21/m ... fstra.aspx is Manhattan's preview titled "Manhattan Concludes Non-Conference Play At Hofstra."

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... /Game9.pdf is Manhattan's Games Notes. They linked to their Game Notes for their previous game, but I changed the URL to find the Game Notes for today. Their player season-high in points is only 18 by Elijah Buchanan. They play low-scoring games with 61.4 scored and 63.6 allowed. Samir Stewart leads them with 9.7 points, and Buchanan averages 9.0.

Manhattan plays 20 MAAC games, so they will have 2 fewer games than us before conference tournaments, 31 to 29. 15 of their 20 MAAC games are on Friday or Sunday.

http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2019 ... attan.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Manhattan." After having six Unicorn Scores (first game in team history with that score) in our first 11 games, our 87-72 win at Princeton wasn't even our first game with that score in 2019 as we won 87-72 hosting UNCW on January 17.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=266453 will have statistics. It shows that Manhattan has a whopping 21 players on their roster, of which 14 have played. 8 players average at least 10 minutes per team game, which is how I define significant playing time.

The Sagarin expects us to win by 12.34 (Rating), 12.44 (Predictor), 11.42 (Golden_Mean), and 13.27 (Recent). Using the home court advantage from the Sagarin, KenPom expects us to win by about 13, but Jerry Beach says KenPom predicts 73-62, which is very close to the 73-63 from the line and Over/Under. All four of the Sagarin differences and KenPom expect us to cover.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=289485 will have statistics for the other CAA game today, which is William & Mary vs. St. Francis (PA) at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in D.C. where the CAA Tournament will be. That game is at 1:00 P.M. After today, no CAA teams play until CAA games start on Saturday with four games. Travel partners William & Mary and Elon play their CAA opener at Elon on Monday December 30, so Hofstra's 5 days off between their last nonconference game and first CAA game is the fewest days rest in the CAA. CAA teams not playing a travel partner open with Saturday-Monday-Thursday-Saturday to play 4 games in 8 days. Our game after today is Saturday at 4:00 P.M. at James Madison followed by a weekday 2:00 P.M. day game at Towson on Monday December 30. Our first CAA home game is against William & Mary on Thursday January 2.

https://portal.stretchinternet.com/hofs ... Type=video has video. We are starting our usual starters.

Edit: We lead 21-18 with 7:49 left in the half. Both teams have a largest lead of 3. Buie has 2 assists, 2 turnovers, and no steals. Trueheart has our only steal. Pauly Paulicap has shot 4-4. Kante defended him by the basket but couldn't stop him, so Hughes came in until he committed 2 fouls. Then Kante came back in as opposed to Schutte.

Edit: We're on an 11-0 run to lead 27-18 and make Manhattan call timeout with 4:47 left in the half.

Edit: Manhattan is within 27-22. We have only 3 fouls. Tykei Greene, who has shot threes 3-3, and Paulicap have shot 8-11, and the rest of Manhattan shot 0-2.

Manhattan was within 27-23 when I mistakenly typed 27-22. Buie missed a three, and the play-by-play doesn't say who got the offensive rebound, but Kante scored on a shot that wasn't shown because the video showed commercials during the game. That made it 29-23. Pemberton made 2 free throws with 2:39 left to go up 31-23. It was a 1-and-1, and the first went in, out, and in. Pemberton made a three with 40 seconds left, Greene scored 2, and Trueheart made a three go up 37-25 at halftime. Trueheart's first shot was a dunk that got blocked, and that was his second shot. Pemberton had 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Kante has 10 points without a miss, 4 rebounds, and our only block. Buie has 5 points, 3 assists, and no steals. Ray shot 1-7 and has 3 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Coburn missed his only attempt, which was a three, made 2 free throws, and missed the first of a 1-and-1 to score 2. Trueheart scored 3 as I mentioned. Hughes played 4 minutes, Schutte played 2 minutes, and neither of them shot. Hughes had 2 fouls and no positive contributions. Schutte had 1 rebound and nothing else good or bad. Buie played the whole half, Pemberton got 1:42 off, Ray got 2:27 off, and Coburn got 4:07 off. Trueheart had 9 of our bench minutes. I'm assuming Silverio isn't there, and none of Burgess, Miranda, or Gibson Jr. played. We attempted 14 twos and 14 threes. Tykei Greene led Manhattan with 13, Pauly Paulicap had 8 points and 4 rebounds, and Tyler Reynolds didn't score but had 4 rebounds. Christian Hinckson didn't score, but led them with 3 assists. Manhattan shot free throws 0-2.

Edit: When I resumed watching, the second half score was 12-8 in favor of Manhattan, and we led 45-37. Neither team scored for 3:19. After having 3 fouls and 5 turnovers in the second half, we had 8 fouls and 11 turnovers in about the first two-thirds of the second half. We took our largest lead at 13 and lead 55-47 with 3:21 left. Tykei Greene made threes 56 seconds apart, has made all 5 of his threes, and leads all scorers with 25, which is a majority of his team's points. Pemberton leads us with 17.

We won 63-51. Manhattan says they play better in the second half, and the second half score was 26-26. We covered the spread, and the spread, Sagarin, and KenPom were all close to the margin, albeit the total was 21.5 under the Over/Under. Buie's 2 free throws with 35 seconds left tied Pemberton with 19 points, and Buie's steal with 28 seconds left ensured that we would cover the spread. Buie shot well at 7-13, including 3-8 threes, and 2-2 free throws. He had 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals, and a career-high 6 turnovers. After never having at least 5 turnovers in a game before this season, he's done that three times. Pemberton shot 6-16, and his problem was threes at 2-9. He made all 5 free throws. He had 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Kante had 14 points without a miss, 11 rebounds, ad 2 blocks. He shot free throws 2-2 as we shot them 12-14, with the only misses by Coburn who shot 3-5 including missing the first of a 1-and-1. Coburn made 1 of 4 field goals and scored only 5, while his 4 rebounds were also below his average. Ray missed both of his second half shots to shoot 1-9 and score 3. He was second on us with 6 rebounds, and his 4 assists tied Buie and Pemberton for our lead. The bench played 20 minutes, with no points, 1 missed three by Trueheart, and 5:11 in the second half. Buie played the whole game, Pemberton played 38 including the whole second half, Ray played 36, Coburn played 34, and Kante played 32. Complete games are not a basketball statistic, but if they were then Green, JWF, Pemberton, and Buie might have been among the national leaders while Mihalich has coached us. 3 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal were all the positive contributions by our bench. We had 13 assists and 17 turnovers as our ratio continues to get worse. We shot field goals 22-51 (.431), threes 7-25 (.280) including 2-11 in the second half, and free throws 12-14 (.857). Manhattan shot field goals 22-56 (.393), threes 6-15 (.400), and free throws 1-5 (.200). I wonder how many times a team has shot threes at least twice as well as free throws excluding if a team didn't attempt any free throws. Tykei Greene led all scorers with 25. He made all 5 threes and only 5 of 12 twos with no free throw attempts. He had 4 rebounds. Paluy Paulicap was Manhattan's other double-digit scorer with 13, and he led them with 7 rebounds. They had 13 points from other players. Elijah Buchanan had 4 points, 4 rebounds, and led all players with 5 assists, which is surprising considering he entered averaging 1.8 assists, which ranked sixth among players on either team. We had 10 more rebounds, 39 to 29. 90 of the 114 points (78.9 percent) were by 5 players. To compare, against Princeton the five top scorers had 93 of 159, which is 58.5 percent. Here are our starters' points per game changes today:

Pemberton: 16.9 to 17.1
Buie: 16.4 to 16.6
Ray: 13.3 to 12.5
Coburn: 11.8 to 11.3
Kante: 8.9 to 9.3

https://gohofstra.com/news/2019/12/22/m ... t-win.aspx is Hofstra's recap titled "MBB: Pemberton and Buie Lead Hofstra Past Manhattan For Third Straight Win."

https://gohofstra.com/sports/mens-baske ... score/9185 is the box score. The attendance of 2,257 is disappointing for a weekend against an area team.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... =401171872 is the AP recap titled "Pemberton, Buie lift Hofstra over Manhattan 63-51."

Sloppy game (17 TOs), but Manhattan played us tough. Our starters logged 90% of the minutes.

Totally agree Jojo.

I understand OS was not present, but should have CB and/or JM log a few minutes. With DB logging 38 to 40 min per game (40 min today) we will be looking at an inexperienced rookie at the point next year (assuming roster stays the same).

Both DB and EP played hard today and thier play led to the W. That being said, gotta give some props to IK. Best game this season for him, and not just because his numbers looked good. He appears to be moving better than earlier in the season. Still no speedster and certainly no leaper, but better offensive footwork and movement towards the basket. Still hoping for improvement in rebounding, but I'll take incremental improvements as long as the trend is always to the good.

I like seeing HH getting a few minutes per game. Needs lots of work (on court and in the weight room), but he seems to make a few good plays per game that make you think there's something there. Still waiting for JM to give him the green light to throw up a 3 pointer or two.

It was a good win against a team that makes you work for it - haven’t seen that much full court pressure since the Keats UNCW teams. Outcome was never really in doubt.

Pemba and Buie will continue to pace this team, but we need a few more consistent scorers to help them. Ray seems to have fallen off (maybe he is still hurt?) and Coburn’s offensive game has been lacking. Was nice to see Kante step up today.

Thought we got some more good minutes from Trueheart today - including a 3 he hit going into half that he was absolutely trying to pass off but ran out of time and heaved it up.

I like that they play HH and KS some but man do they hurt on the offensive side. KS had a pass hit him in the chest and just bounced off. Buie would easily have 3-4 more assists a game if our centers could catch a pass.

9-4 is a nice finish for OOC play - think it’s 1 win behind last year. Hopefully this team continues to gel in conference play.

All good assessments fo Sundays game.
Ray - seemed a bit "limpy" - as thought he took a knee to his thigh early in the game.
Coburn - has been off.
Buie - would easily have 3-4 more assists IF we had one big that could anticipate and catch a ball (not just the ones we see/how many does DB just shoot it as opposed passing and watching another bounce away)
Pemberton playing good ball
Kante - as others posted - is moving much better; we arguing to have to accept for what he isn't - not above the rim player, not a thunderous finisher; he has got to battle more, bang more
Hu
Oh SHT - Shutte, Hughes, Truehart - gave us nice minutes, so different are they as players, nothing spectacular - they all move well and as others like when they are on the court in combo with each other (with Kante)

No mention of the insane Manhattan block of the potential tomahawk dunk of Truehart....OUCH!!!!!

Correct. Last season started win hosting Mount St. Mary's, loss at Marshall, win hosting North Carolina A&T, loss at Maryland, win hosting Cal State Fullerton, loss at VCU, and then a 16 game winning streak.
