Game #11 vs. Stony Brook 12/10 7PM

Post by triplec2195 »

Well the game for the bragging rights on Long Island and an important game for a lot of reasons aside from the local rivalry. We come off a lopsided loss to the Bonnies where we didn't do anything well other then play badly. We need to play well here and get back on the winning track. I think for us the obvious question is what's the state of health of Jalen. We need a healthy Ray I believe to win this game which should be a close game. We are around a 5 point favorite playing at home. I wonder if anyone knows how we did with ticket sales for this game? The real ones that is! This team rebounds well so this will be something for us to focus on getting our guards to bang the boards and hopefully get penetration so we don't hang our hats on the 3 ball.

Great piece on News12 Long Island - about HU vs SB - but so much more. This should be a yearly segment - in preview to this game. Nice work Kevin Maher.

The more I hear JAM - the more I like him.

Every time I tried that News 12 link it ran a minute or so and stopped with an error.
ESPN has us as 4.5 point favs...but it all depends on whether we hit our shots and if Jalen is healthy...if not we could be in trouble.
Hope the fact that we're FINALLY at home gives us a real boost.

Seeing HU by 4 with a 142 O/U, which equates to an expected 73-69 Hofstra win.

Finally home after 9,068 miles of traveling;

Hofstra→UCLA- 2,813 miles
UCLA→Fullerton- 36 miles
Fullerton→San Diego- 103 miles
San Diego→Hofstra- 2,796 miles
Hofstra→←FAU (x2)- 2,672 miles
Hofstra→←St. Bona (x2)- 648 miles

With only three days off between the San Diego and Holy Cross games, I'm surprised they didn't just go from CA directly to FL without the quick stop home in between.

But at least they'll have a chance to catch their breath now with only three games in 18 days before starting CAA play at JMU on 12/28.

Agree Wags but I heard a few of the kids wanted to get home for Thanksgiving...
This was a killer trip both physically and mentally. I've got to believe it took its toll on the team; especially going from Roca to Olean NY!!!!!

Yes but I’m sure they’ll have a ton of schoolwork to make up and final exams to study for and Holiday travel. Not easy being a student athlete alright.

In the first 2 minutes, Ray, Pemberton, and Buie made threes. We led 9-5, but Stony Brook went on a 9-0 run to lead 14-9. We didn't score for 5:16. After Pemberton missed a three, Coburn got the offensive rebounds, drew a shooting foul, and made both free throws. Pemberton scored to go down 14-13. With 11:57 left, Stony Brook traveled to cause a media timeout. Hughes missed with a chance at giving us the lead.

Edit: We tied our largest lead at 26-22. We made 5 of 11 threes. Pemberton and Ray have 8 each.

Edit: We made our second two-pointer with 6:45 left in the half, which is almost a third of the way through the game.

Edit: We lead 30-26. Andrew Garcia leads all players with 12. He made 5 of 7 field goals and both free throws which are Stony Brook's only attempts. He has 4 rebounds, but he has 5 turnovers. Mouhamadou Gueye has 5 points and 8 rebounds.

Edit: We took our larges lead at 36-28, but Makale Foreman made a three with 45 seconds left and a three to end the half to make it 36-34. The announcers didn't say this, but since we only had 5 fouls, we could have disrupted them with a foul that would not have given free throws.

Hofstra: Ray leads us with 11. He made 3 threes, and had 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Pemberton scored 8. He shot threes 2-4, but shot twos 1-4. He had 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Buie scored 8. He missed his second free throw, which was the only miss of the 10 attempts by both teams combined. He shot threes 1-2, twos 1-3, and free throws 3-4. He had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Coburn made 1 of 5 field goals, which was a three, and 2 free throws to score 5. He led us with 4 rebounds and had our only block. Kante started but played only 8 minutes, and he had 1 foul so it wasn't because of foul trouble. He did not score and had 1 rebound and 1 assist. 5:00 into the game, Hughes replaced Kante. Hughes played 3:46, and other than 1 missed field goal, a +/- of +4, and 4 minutes, all of his statistics were 0. Schutte played the last 8:30 and was credited with 9 minutes. He made both field goals to score 4, but had only 1 rebound. He played more than Kante. Trueheart played 1:29 and didn't do anything. Silverio played 5 minutes and shot 0-3. Not only did he not score, but he attempted a lot of shots per minute played. He had 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Pemberton and Ray played the whole half. Buie and Coburn played 17 minutes.

Stony Brook: Elijah Olaniyi, who leads Stony Brook and is third in the America East with 19.7 points, hasn't scored. He played only 11 minutes because of 3 fouls, and he had 5 turnovers. 2 turnovers were offensive fouls, so his fouls and turnovers combined for 6 plays. Garcia still has 12, Foreman has 11, Gueye still has 5, and three Stony Brook players have 2.

Team Statistics and Comparisons: We shot threes 7-16 (.438), but shot twos 5-18 (.278). Stony Brook had more rebounds, 22 to 17. Stony Brook had a poor ratio of 5 assists to 11 turnovers. We had 2 fewer fouls and 5 fewer turnovers.

The poor shooting continues so far tonight...

After shooting at least 47.4% in 5 of its first 8 games this season (including over 50% three times), @Hofstra has cooled off a lot with the exception of one game* since that time:

36.1%
47.4%*
36.1%
27.6%
35.3% at halftime tonight.

Not going to go very far if they can't straighten that out again.

I’m at a point where I’d rather have 5 guards out there than Kante. Can’t watch him miss one foot shots and hand the ball to the other team anymore.

Think the staff is starting to feel the same, which is maybe why he only played 7:44 (despite just one PF) in the first half.

Olaniyi committed has fourth foul with 17:53 left, but that didn't hurt Stony Brook, who retook the lead at 43-41. The next three scores were lead changes, after which we led 47-45. We took our largest lead at 54-45 with 11:01 left. With 10:42 left, Olaniyi made a three for his first points. After allowing consecutive layups, Kante was replaced by Hughes, who was replaced by Schutte just like in the first half. Silverio shot an air ball three, and Stony Brook made two threes to tie it at 54 with 8:06 left. Stony Brook has 18 turnovers.

Edit: We haven't committed a foul in the second half, but the bad thing is that if we are losing we could have to commit multiple fouls to give Stony Brook free throws.

The first of those two 3s was off of HU's fourth airball of the night.

HU shooting 19/59. This team's shooting in a major funk over several games right now. Everyone trying to create a shot 1-on-1, off the dribble. No player movement, no cutting, no ball movement to get open 2s, only for 3s.

Ugly game, but a win is a win. I'll especially take the win over Long Island's inferior team.

We didn't make a field goal in the last 5:05, but it was still a great ending. We won 71-63. Pemberton's 2 free throws with 23 seconds left were the only double-digit lead of the game, and it last 5 seconds until Stony Brook made 2 free throws for the final score. Stony Brook didn't make a field goal in the last 4:41. We made 5 of 19 twos and 5 of 19 threes in the second half (.263), which was worse than the first half, and we scored 1 more in the first half, 36 to 35. Stony Brook scored 34 in the first half and 29 in the second half. We shot field goals 22-72 (.306), which was our most attempts against a Division I team without evertime since an 89-76 loss hosting Elon on January 7, 2018. Our 50 misses were our most misses since we shot 28-79 in that game, and that includes non-Division I and overtime games. Last season we missed exactly 30.2 field goals per game. In addition to today and that game, here are the times from 2005-2006 to the present that we missed at least 50 field goals sorted from most to fewest misses:

54: 31-85 (.365) in a 97-81 loss at Massachusetts on December 20, 2008
50: 20-70 (.286) in a 71-68 overtime win over Western Michigan in the Charleston Classic on November 15, 2008

Today was the first time in at least 470 games that we missed 50 field goals in a regulation win!

Buie led all players with 20, led all players with 6 assists, was one of five players (three on Hofstra) with 2 steals, and had 6 rebounds. Ray had 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. He shot threes 5-9 but shot twos 1-6. Pemberton had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds but shot 4-16. He shot twos and threes 2-8 each. Coburn had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, which tied Andrew Garcia for the most rebounds. Coburn shot 2-13 with twos 0-4 and threes 2-9. Kante scored 5, but shot 2-6 without attempting a 3. Schutte shot 2-3 for our only 4 bench points. Silverio shot 0-4, Hughes shot 0-1, and Trueheart didn't shoot. Miranda, Burgess, Gibson Jr., and Klementowicz didn't play. We had only 6 rebounds from forwards, with 5 by Kante and 1 by Schutte. We shot twos 10-37 (.270), threes 12-35 (.343), and free throws 15-17 (.882). We had much fewer fouls, 16 to 9, and half as many turnovers, 11 to 22. Andrew Garcia had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Makale Foreman scored 16, but he made only one-third of his twos and one-third of his threes. Miles Latimer has their third and final double-digit scorer with 10. Elijah Olaniyi had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 fouls, and 7 turnovers. He wasn't the player with the most turnovers because Garcia had 8. Jeff Otchere had 7 rebounds and 5 blocks in 25 minutes without attempting a shot. He became the second player from 2010-2011 to the present to have at least 7 rebounds, at least 5 blocks, no field goal attempts, and no free throw attempts. The prior player to do that was Illinois State's Michael Middlebrooks in a 79-70 loss hosting Manhattan on November 20, 2013.

Hofstra became the first team from 2010-2011 to the present to have a field goal percentage of .306 or lower, score at least 71 points, made 15 or fewer free throws, and win.

The first of those two 3s was off of HU's fourth airball of the night.

Silverio took three 3s and none even hit the rim. On a brighter night despite not shooting well Tareq was huge tonight with so many key rebounds. Also good to see Jalen with a pep in his step so to speak, looks like he’s over whatever injury he had. Jalen is .397% three point shooter for his career and over 40% so far this year which is really impressive especially considering he shoots from the corners so much. As dreadful as Kante is I will admit he was a lot better late in the game. I’ll gladly take the win as Hofstra is now 24-2 in their last 26 games at the Mack.
