Towson won at UMass tonight, 67-55 (were up 42-28 at halftime), which means UMass will lose to two CAA teams this season (see what I did there?).

When we recently discussed the CAA expanding to 14 members for the 2023-2024 seasons, I started thinking about how the basketball schedules might be affected. With 7 north (NU, Hofstra, SBU, MU, DU, UD, and TU) and 7 south (CW&M, Hampton, NCA&T, EU, Campbell, UNCW, and CofC) teams, there could be North and South divisions to reduce some of the travel expenses. Play 12 home and away games within the division and 7 games with the other teams. Here are some possible problems: 1) there would be an increase in the number of CAA games from 18 to 19 2) With 19 games, there could not be an even amount of home and away CAA games unless there was a designated partner in the other division to increase the number of CAA games to 20 3) reduced possible revenue from guaranteed OCC games or tournament games with the added CAA game. I think I would be in favor of the 19 CAA game setup. This could be accomplished with the elimination of any Division 2 or Division 3 games presently on some team's schedules (for Hofstra, that would be teams like Molloy and Old Westbury). Teams could also decide to remain at 18 CAA games with the elimination of one game in league. For example, this season Hofstra only plays longtime rival Drexel once. With 19 CAA games, the number of home and away games could not be equal in any season (10 home and 9 away or 9 home and 10 away). The schedule could be alternated for an odd or even number of home or away games every season. This is what the lacrosse team's CAA schedule was when there were only 5 CAA games. What do you think the CAA members might decide?

Teams could play two games against division opponents, one game against six teams in the other division, and two games against one team in the other division for a total of 20. One way is a seven season rotation. Another way is to make pairs that play twice every season. For example, the teams within each division could be ordered from north to south. That would make these pairs play twice every season:

Northeastern and William & Mary
Stony Brook and Hampton
Hofstra and Elon (slightly north of North Carolina A&T)
Monmouth and North Carolina A&T
Drexel and Campbell
Delaware and UNCW
Towson and Charleston

To EvanJ, Good suggestion about the 20 game CAA season. I think that is a very possible solution.

There are twenty days with CAA games. When some games are on Wednesday and some are on Thursday, I count that as one day. Each team gets two days off. Stony Brook and Monmouth are off for the second time on Monday, and play the last 13 times. 35 of 117 CAA games have been played. Here are the standings:

Charleston: 6-0
Hofstra: 5-1
UNCW: 4-2
Drexel: 4-2
Towson: 3-2
Stony Brook: 3-2
William & Mary: 3-2
North Carolina A&T: 3-3
Delaware: 2-3
Northeastern: 2-3
Hampton: 0-5
Elon: 0-5
Monmouth: 0-5

No other conference has three teams winless in conference.

North Carolina A&T won 90-86 at William & Mary. North Carolina A&T made their last 11 field goals. Drexel won their rivalry homecoming 77-74 over Delaware, who scored 1 point in overtime, which was with 4:43 left. Delaware had three players combine for 64 points.

Monte Ross is back in the CAA. The former Delaware head coach will become the head coach at NC A&T.

With 7:32 left, Towson leads 55-36 hosting Campbell, and Campbell has only two players with more than 3 points. It took until a basket and a foul with 4:30 left for Campbell to excced 36 points and get a third player above 3 points.
