2020 Men's Lacrosse

Post by HofstraHockey »

The schedule has been released.

https://gohofstra.com/schedule.aspx?path=mlax

For those of you that like local matchups, boy are you going to be excited. Those that like high caliber opponents.... oh boy. But there are three Big Ten opponents, 6 home OOC games (vs 4 on the road), and the three weekday games are 7PM starts (two are on the road at SB and St. John's).

I love adding Michigan and keeping Rutgers, Villanova and Ohio State on schedule, but wish we weren't playing as many low-level teams as we are. With this schedule will be very hard to get an at-large bid even if we go 12-3 in the regular season.

The CAA is a one-bid conference.

Is much harder to get an a-large bid than in past, but is still attainable if you have enough top 20 RPI wins and no bad losses. Problem is very little margin for error from us and risks of bid-thieves in other conferences.

This past season, at-large bids went to Duke, Johns Hopkins, Loyola Maryland, Maryland, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Virginia, Yale. Who do you see the CAA displacing? The big boys all play each other in conference, so their SOS is automatically higher.

Until and unless the NCAA expands the tournament field, I just don't see any mid-major conferences sending more than one team to the playoffs.

I mean you could conceivably take the Loyola or Yale spots. But not with this OOC schedule.

Loyola won the national championship in 2012 and has been to the playoffs four straight years. Yale won the championship in 2018 and lost to Virginia in the finals last year. Hard to knock them out.

I don't think any CAA team will receive an at-large bid unless the tournament field expands. But we can hope.

Well this should make the St John's matchup a little easier...

Did you read the article? Their captain is now off the team. Has to be a big loss for them.

Cra Cra story for sure - thank God the kid survived, would’ve been destroyed lives all around if he didn’t

As far as scheduling, I’m always off for playing tough national schedules in every sport – just makes it a lot more interesting as a fan, and gives your program a chance to actually make a name for itself.

Unfortunately this program is so off it’s historical track and in dire need of a pulse, at this point just win whatever games they’ve got ... I have zero faith in this program’s ability to handle anything more at this point than focusing on the conference and finally earning their way back to the NCAA tourney.

This is a sign of the times though, proud of HU for doing what they can to keep up. Facilities is a straight up arms race for D1 programs. It has enormous impact in recruiting. It's getting absurd too for the big dogs, but it is what it is.

Gotta fight to keep up or you'll get smoked. That's why the hoops practice facility was so important, and a super move by HU. It matters, as silly as it may seem.

IMO HU really needs to invest in building athlete specific dorms. This is a real thing, and any serious athletic dept needs it to compete. They have all kinds of wasted property by the rec center for years and years that should be used for an athlete dorm compound.

And it benefits the entire U opening up spots on campus for more non-athlete students.

Hope they get on that. Dorms is a major major thing in today's competitive landscape.

I don't even think they're filling the dorms as is. They could probably renovate one of the houses in Colonial Square for that. Liberty/Republic was knocked down and never replaced, so I can't imagine there's a drastic need for dorm space.

There is a photo gallery of the 2020 team being welcomed to the newly renovated Lacrosse locker room before their first practice on the GoHofstra website. Each of the approximately 40 lockers contain the player's name, jersey number, and the name of the donor. The lockers contain the new Nike uniforms, helmets, backpacks, pads, and spikes foe each team member. There is also a letter U shaped arrangement of sofas and chairs in the center area of the room. This very impressive room was funded by James Metzger and the rest of the donors. The players in the photo gallery look overwhelmed by their first viewing of the room. The HU Athletic Department, the Men's Lacrosse Team, James Metzger, and all the donors should be very proud of what they have built. It is hard to believe that the first home game is only a few weeks from now on Saturday, February 8th.

Just saw on the FanLax website that HU is hosting the Ivy League Championships on Friday, May 1st and Sunday, May 3rd. Last spring, Columbia was the site. I believe the CAA Championships are scheduled for Thursday, April 30th and Saturday, May 2nd hosted by the First Place team. The CAA Women's Championships are scheduled for Friday, May 1st and Sunday, May3rd at JMU, not the first place team.
