Hofstra vs W&M 1/10/19

Post by triplec2195 »

I wasn't going to start this topic I figured it would be better served by Evan or someone other then me but had a question to pose. I see that W&M's 2nd leading scorer Justin Pierce has missed a few games this year and didn't play in their last game. Does anyone know what his status is going into this game? I saw in Newsday this morning we're favored by three on the road probably about right. I expect a close game and I'll leave my comments right there.

I will leave the detailed scouting report to someone else as I don't know too much about them. But this will definitely be a tough test to start our road CAA slate. We always play close games verse W&M.

Always worry about the Marys, especially on their home court...He is a good coach, probably one of the underrated coaches in the CAA...hoping for a good showing and another notch in the winning streak!

Yes more then likely a tough/close game with us needing to contain Nathan Knight. Another challenge for Taylor lets hope he contains him to some degree. I've heard Tony Shaver's press conferences and he is always very honest and complimentary when he gets beaten.

I think this is a good matchup for us. I watched them against Delaware last week, and they looked mediocre in a loss.

Knight got the ball a lot in that UD game, but was somewhat ineffective. He's still their go-to guy though, with 24 and 12 boards in a win against Drexel on Saturday. I think Taylor can give him some problems, but I expect Knight gets a bunch of touches tonight.

Pierce (aka Wall St. MJ) is playing for the Tribe tonight, confirmed by Shaver.

What always makes W&M a good test for us is that they don't expect to win the game on the FT line, so it takes away our advantage that we foul so infrequently. The games we play against the Tribe tend to turn into high scoring shootouts because of that, IMO.

We have to win this one though, we're just the more talented team. I mean I wouldn't be shocked if W&M put on a shooting clinic and grabbed the win, but we have a huge talent advantage, we're a better version of their team, and we need the W to keep setting the pace this season.

Solid road test here, would expect a good game because:

They can score
They’re athletic
They’re at home
Shaver

That said agree fully with FD that HU is the better overal squad and should pull out the W - honestly wouldn’t be shocked with either a relatively comfortable 10 pt HU win, or something much closer, depending on the D and how well WM shoots.

But I’m pretty confident this first conf road test is one HU is going to take very seriously and come ready.

Pierce is playing, but Matt Milon is not. He averages 12.7 points and 2.8 threes.

I thought the announcers said Milon wouldn't play. He didn't start, but he came in. Hofstra trails 8-2. Hofstra made 1 of 9 field goals, with Taylor shooting 0-for-4, and William & Mary has blocked 4 shots!

Edit: We trailed by as much as 7 at 11-4 and are now down 15-14. Our only three is by Coburn off the background, so our last two made threes hit the backboard.

Edit: With 9:18 left in the half, Trueheart entered. Ray and Dwyer entered before, so we have used 8 players. We tied it at 19, but William & Mary has the ball up 21-19 with 7:55 left in the half. Hofstra has only 3 fouls. William & Mary has 6, so the next one will put Hofstra in the bonus.

W&M feed far superior to ours. Looks like an actual telecast of the game instead of the two angles we get. Would be nice to have something similar for our home games.

Pemberton playing smart and in control tonight. Just gave Hofstra its first lead, 28-26, on a left wing 3.

Not a bad place to be (at the last media timeout of the half now), considering they were down 11-4 and are still shooting just 38.5% (10/26).

Ray made a four-point play and JWF made a layup to go up 36-28 and make William & Mary call timeout with 1:53 left.

4-point play for Ray! He can shoot the 3 nicely at times.

Puts Hofstra up 34-28... now 36-28, after another JWF bucket. It's 32-17, Pride since trailing 11-4. Terrific way to bounce back. Started the game shooting 1/9.

Great drive by Buie, turning on the quickness, with the shot clock running down, from the top of the arc, down the lane for two.

Makes it 38-28... and that's what it is at halftime. Outstanding job by Hofstra to be up 10 at the break after that bad start.

OK - half, especially the last 5 minutes.
Not sure W&M is playing sloppy - or making them look this bad.
Seemed to play better with DD (and JR) on the floor the JT (or ST)...like how he spread the minutes out amongst JT, DD and ST...
gives us more fouls (no in foul trouble at all) spread out against or bigs
TC good start nothing after

We lead 38-28 at halftime. Since William & Mary reached 11 points, they have 17 points and 8 turnovers. Hofstra continues to avoid fouls and turnovers with 4 of each, while William & Mary had 9 of each. Nobody has missed a free throw, with 6 made by Hofstra and 1 on a three-point play by William & Mary with 18:46 left. Considering teams normally reach the bonus, it is rare to go the last 18:46 of a half without attempting a free throw.

JWF leads all scorers with 15. He shot two-pointers well, but made 1 of 5 threes. Him, Pemberton, Coburn, and Ray made 1 three each as Hofstra is shooting them 4-for-10. Pemberton has scored 9 and shot well, but he doesn't have any rebounds or assists. Coburn has 8 points, made 3 of 4 field goals, and has 4 rebounds. Taylor has missed all 4 of his field goals and hasn't scored, along with being tied with Coburn with 4 rebounds. Buie only attempted 2 field goals and has 2 points and 3 assists. We have only 2 other assists, and Buie is the only player on either team with 3.

Justin Pierce leads William & Mary with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting including 2-for-2 threes. He has 5 rebounds, but has no assists and 4 turnovers. He entered averaging 3.5 assists. Chase Audige scored 8 and is their only other player to score more than 2. Nathan Knight (2 points and 1 rebound) and Matt Milon (0 points with 5 misses) combined for 2 points. They entered combining to average 31.3, and Knight entered averaging 7.1 rebounds.
