MBB Game 2 at Marshall on November 11, 2018 at 2:30 P.M.

Post by EvanJ »

Marshall's coach is Dan D'Antoni, whose real name is Lewis Joseph D'Antoni. He coached the same high school from 1975 to 2005. From 2005 to 2014 he was an assistant coach under his brother Mike for three NBA teams including the Knicks. In 2014, he started at Marshall, where he is 74-63. His .540 winning percentage is slightly better than Mihalich's .537 at Hofstra. Marshall was picked second behind Western Kentucky in 14 team Conference USA.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2018/11/10/m ... pride.aspx is Hofstra's preview titled "MBB: First Road Trip In Store For Pride." Hofstra likes playing Marshall every six seasons. Hofstra won the only two previous meetings by 3 in Alaska on November 24, 2006 and at home on November 18, 2012.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... 9game2.pdf is Hofstra's Game Notes.

JWF is 23 points behind Apodaca for 12th in career points. Apodaca is fourth in career points among players who played at least some of the time in the CAA. He scored 103 more than Adeleke, but much fewer than Jenkins, Agudio, and Stokes. Assuming JWF stays, he will be seventh of Hofstra's 1,000 point scorers to play four seasons in the CAA. In addition to who I named already, Rivera, Gustys, and Lester did that. Pemberton should reach 1,000 this season, but he can't guarantee that he will finish at Hofstra until next season.

Marshall has not posted a preview yet. https://herdzone.com/sidearmstats/mbball/summary will have statistics. Unfortunately, Marshall doesn't use statsheet like all CAA teams do.

http://www.espn.com/watch/_/id/9986ccc6 ... s-marshall will have the game, which is part of ESPN+. You can pay monthly or yearly. It costs $4.99 per month, and you get lots of sports including many NCAA sports and soccer. It's a much more reasonable price than having to pay about $4.99 for one game or more for a monthly subscription to one school if you want to watch Hofstra play there. If you want to watch Hofstra play at Maryland, you have to pay the Big Ten $9.95 for a monthly subscription. Today ESPN+ has 85 NCAA games, which are 28 Football games, 15 Men's Basketball games, 5 Women's Basketball games, 8 Men's Hockey games, 2 Women's Hockey games, 6 Men's Soccer games, 19 Volleyball games 1 Swimming & Diving Invitational, and 1 Rugby game.

The Sagarin expects Marshall to win by 9 to 13 depending on what component you use.

Hofstra's last nine games to start at 2:30 P.M. were March 7 and 8, 2015 CAA Tournament games; a December 28, 2014 game against LIU Brooklyn at Barclays Center; a November 26, 2011 game against Cleveland State in the TicketCity Legends Classic at Rhode Island; a March 6, 2011 CAA Tournament game against Old Dominion (Jenkins's second-to-last game); March 6 and 7, 2009 CAA Tournament games; a March 5, 2005 CAA Tournament game against Drexel; and a March 6, 2004 CAA Tournament game against Old Dominion. It will be the first time since at least 2003-2004, which is as far back as Hofstra has start times for, that a Hofstra game started at 2:30 P.M. with one of the teams at home.

https://herdzone.com/news/2018/11/10/me ... fstra.aspx is titled "Marshall Men’s Hoops Prepares For Home Opener Against Hofstra."

https://s3.amazonaws.com/herdzone.com/d ... _11_11.pdf is Marshall's Game Notes. Jon Elmore made a team record 527 free throws. To compare, Hofstra's record of 639 by Jenkins, who is second in CAA history behind George Mason's Carlos Yates with 690. He has a chance to make 700 free throws, which only 22 players have done. Elmore also has a chance at reaching 2,500 points, which 62 players have done, and he could exceeded Jenkins's record of 2,513. Elmore was seventh in assists last season at 6.9 and was the only player to average at least 20 points, at least 6 assists, and at least 5 rebounds. With 602 assists, he should easily exceed Claxton's record of 660.

Edit: Marshall is 39th in the Sagarin and is the 6th best team outside the top six conferences behind Gonzaga, Nevada, San Francisco, Houston, and Central Florida.

A D'Antoni v JAM coached teams - sounds like you take the over (no matter what the number is).

Marshall is a 7 1/2-point favorite, so this would be a very good win on their home floor if HU can get it.

The -350 isn't a point spread. It's how baseball odds are done where they tell you how much you need to bet on the favorite to win 100 and how much you win if you bet 100 on the underdog. -350 means that if you bet $350 on Marshall you get your bet back and $100 profit. That doesn't make sense either because with a 7.5 point spread your profit on betting the favorite should be more than 2/7ths of your bet.

Edit: Hofstra used the same starters as two days ago. Wright-Foreman has 6 points and 6 of our 7 field goal attempts with a two-pointer by Pemberton being the other shot. Hofstra leads 8-5. Marshall has shot 2-for-9 and 1-for-2 free throws.

But little help elsewhere (17 of HU's 27). Hanging in though, down just two at the under-8.

10-2 run to give HU its biggest lead, 37-31 by the under-4.

JWF 19 on 8/12 fg (7/8 from 2); no one in double figs yet for Marshall.

Jon Elmore made 3 free throws with 0.2 seconds left to cut Hofstra's lead to 45-42. The statistics page has the correct score, but the video and the scoreboard at the arena say 45-43. I hope Mihalich or somebody else on Hofstra notices and tells a referee at halftime.

HU up, 45-42, at halftime.

25 for JWF, who is only 1/4 from 3, but 7/8 from 2 and a perfect 8/8 at the line, where only one other FT was attempted by Hofstra.

Eli 11 pts on a perfect 5/5 from the floor. That, along with JWF's 8/12 fg, has HU sitting at 65.4% (17/26) from the floor at halftime.

Very good half from the Dutch at 7 1/2-pt underdogs on the road, less than 48 hours after opening the season. Let's see what they do in the second half. Gotta win primarily with enough D (especially late), more JWF heroics, more help from Eli and maybe one more, because that 65.4% will even out in the second half.

12-0 run for Marshall to start the second half, as Hofstra has gone ice cold. Only 2 assists total for Hofstra in the game so far....

But then Hofstra answers with the next 8 to get within 54-53 by the under-12. Good resilience, especially on the road. Let's see if they can hang the rest of the way now.

Tied at 69-all with 2 1/2 to go.

Mainly been 2-man game vs. 2-man game.
JWF/Eli have 53 of HU's 69.
Elmore/Burks have 46 of Marshall's 69.
No one else in the game in double figs.

A Burks layup and an Elmore jumper made it 73-69 late, and HU never recovered. JFW missed a jumper with a chance, then Marshall FTs ice it.

HU comes up short, 76-72. Tough one.

JWF finishes with 34, Pemberton 19, but no one else with more than 7.

HU shoots just 26.5% (9/34) in the second half after shooting 65.4% (17/26) in the first half.
