Leadership, Coaching, and Talent. Let's Chat.

Post by Polito »

This is sent with love, not anger. With support, not abandonment. With hope, not despair.

Let's begin. One by one:

Leadership

The #1 glaring missing component of this squad currently. And I'm looking right at YOU PG's. This team does not need either of you to replace Greens scoring. It needs you to replace his BALL DISTRIBUTION. Start running the O and dishing the rock fellas. This team is going nowhere until that role is properly filled.

Next place I'm looking are the 2 starting upper classmen. Gustys and Bernardi, it's simply not ok for you to be compliment players anymore. That should've been clear from the minute the NIT ended. That should have been a focal point during the entire offseason. It's time to man up and lead your teammates.

Coaching

This is not last years team, and therefore is not going to out-shoot opponents while playing zero D. It's just not that kind of team this season. This team needs to RUN PLAYS. Inside/Out game should have been the tone from game 1. Matter of fact, that is exactly what was TOLD would be the strategy this year to the fans. Understood that Rokus has battled a nagging hand deal, but that is no excuse for the blind hoisting of 3's game after game. That is not a plan. That is individual...that is streetball. And it's a great way to lose a LOT of games. Put the healthy guys in, and run the system.

Speaking of, the system should match the teams skill set, rather than attempting to force the skill sets to match the system. Forcing this years team to win last years way is clearly not going to be effective. If that is the continued direction, it's going to be a looooooong losing season.

We all get this is not going to be a defensive-focused program under this regime. Totally cool to operate under a high-powered O. But that does not exonerate respecting the game of basketball and playing some fashion of D1 defense. Considering this was not going to be a team to simply outscore everyone on the planet, this should have been addressed ad nauseum in the off-season.

Run real plays, and play some D. Not demanding 25 wins. But this is a very fair expectation from this staff in guiding this program.

Talent

HU may not be loaded with 5 stars, but it has enough. Matter of fact, I see enough of it this year and next to accomplish significant goals. That is not the issue. The issue is its not being maximized.
