Women's Soccer 2016

Post by ProudofPride »

Should be an interesting season for the women's soccer team after their highly successful season last year. Obviously the biggest question mark is replacing Leah Galton. HU is receiving votes in the preseason top 25, and was picked 3rd in the CAA. They have already played two exhibition games, beating preseason #10 Rugters at their place 1-0 (Rutgers is the team that that ended our season last year in the second round of the NCAA tourney), and then they somehow lost 0-3 to Umass at Hofstra today. Have to expect the inconsistencies since they are replacing arguably the greatest player in program history, but there's still a lot to be excited about, and this team showed they have a lot of potential with the win at Rutgers. Regular season begins Aug. 19 against Buffalo at Penn State.

Jill Mulholland and Emily Agudelo are on the CAA Preseason team. Kayla Cappuzzo of Northeastern is on the CAA Preseason team. She's from Merrick, where I live, and she's played for the United States Under-18 National Team. I don't know of any famous athletes from Merrick.

If you consider professional wrestling a sport, Matt Cardona went to Calhoun.

Maybe it was different then, but now South Merrick and South Bellmore go to Kennedy, North Merrick goes to Calhoun, and North Bellmore goes to Mepham.

Yeah, I have plenty of friends from North Merrick that went to Mepham. Plus you can go to any of the three if you're enrolled in certain programs.

To all Mepham Pirates...
I graduated from Mepham HS way back in 1949 as a resident of Wantagh. In those days Wantagh did not have their own
high school and tuitioned their kids to Mepham. A great school in those days, hopefully it's still just as great.

Fall Sports 2016

Post by ProudofPride »

Changing this to a general fall sports thrread since there are now more preseason predictions in addition to women's soccer.
Volleyball's poll was announced yesterday, Hofstra was chosen as preseason #1 with 3 all-CAA honorees.
Men's soccer was just announced today, Hofstra was chosen as preseason #1 and Joe Holland is the preseason POY.
Field Hockey is announced tomorrow, we should be at least in the top 4.

Good first game for the ladies. The 1-0 score is not indicative of the game. Hofstra outshot UB 23-3, 10-0 in shots on goal. Penn State on Sunday afternoon.

Solid 2-0 over Boston University tonight, a team that also made it to the second round of the MCAA tournament last season, and ended the year top 50 in the RPI. Interesting strategy to play both goalies tonight, Ashley Wilson for the entire first half and Mehring for the second half. Both were great. Jill Mullholland scored both goals.

The team played 2 more games this weekend at the Army Invitational. They tied DePaul 1-1, and beat UNCG 5-2. All 3 goalies got playing time in the second game. They didn't play against Army, however Army is going to Hofstra this weekend, both the men's and women's teams are playing Army in a double-header at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Army West Point beat Hofstra 3-1. Before the game, Army West Point had lost all 6 of their games by a combined score of 13-1. Hofstra will lose the 1 point they had in the September 6 NSCAA Coaches Poll.

On another note, today the NCAA announced that multiple parts of 2016-2017 tournaments will be moved away from North Carolina due to North Carolina's discrimination against LGBT people. This includes the Women's Soccer College Cup and one NCAA Basketball Tournament site.

Unfortunate, but I think it's now safe to say that the wheels have officially fallen off for this team. They're 0-3 in conference play, and they're currently down 2-0 to uncw only 20 minutes into the first half. However, all 4 of the conference games so far have been on the road. I'm not sure why the caa would ever make any team play the first 4 all on the road when they only play 9 conference games.

Presidential debate for one. This team has a few flaws and they are being exposed. Now down4-1
