Game 13 @Monmouth, 12/22/21, 7 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Hofstra wraps up its Out-of-conference schedule at Monmouth on Wednesday. The 10-2 Hawks are off to their best start ever, beating both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, among others, and have won their last three games:

Looks like the game will be available on ESPN3.

Last chance to take down a local rival, arguably the best mid major in the area. They should have beaten St John’s on their home court and have beaten two P5 teams.

Thus far not getting much respect from ESPN either as Monmouth has been listed as having an over 79 per cent chance of winning.

Guess they haven’t seen our game against Arkansas.

Even though they have 4 guys that average in double figures the guy we need to keep in check is Pappas who can go off and have a big night. He's a good three point shooter and scored 32 points against us last year. This has the makings of a very good game. I wonder if Cooks plays he's a far better option then Silverio who took some bad shots in the Arkansas game and who really had a bad offensive game. I like us in this game because I think we have more scoring options and this game could be a shootout.

They have a good defense so I think a game in the hi 70s benefit us I think Speedy nightmare would be the first to 100 wins

I'm hoping they play man to man since Monmouth shoots the three ball decently and this kid Pappas can kill you from beyond the arc.

ESPN now gives us an almost 33% chance on winning, so we're moving in up!
I see the over under at about 155 for this matchup.

Havent seen any point spread yet but if you go by Sagarin we are essentially 4.5 point underdogs primarily due to the current 3 points given the home team.

Then again with COVID raging, who knows who will play or even if we'll play!

The title is wrong. The game is 12/22/21.

The NCAA made the Power 36, and the ten teams also considered includes Iona, so Monmouth has a battle to win the MAAC. In 2015-2016, Monmouth was 27-7 on Selection Sunday with wins at UCLA, at Rutgers, at Georgetown, neutral vs. USC, and neutral vs. Notre Dame. They won those five by an average of 7.2. They lost the MAAC Final to Iona 79-76 and didn't get an at-large.

In the Mid-Major Poll, Iona is 4th, Monmouth is 10th, JMU is the only CAA team in 17th, and we're the top team out with 58 points to Number 25 Missouri State's 60. 232 teams are in eligible conferences.

Neither team has written a preview yet. Hofstra normally writes previews by this close to the game.

Edit: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... /401365302 is a preview by Automated Insights.

There is a preview at GoHofstra dated 12/20. Something does not add up.

Just checked ESPN, Monmouth listed as a 6 point favorite over HU. The O/U is 146.5.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2021/12/20/m ... mouth.aspx is Hofstra's preview.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... game13.pdf is Hofstra's Game Notes. Cooks is in the Tentative Starting Lineup, but I'm not confident until the lineup is in the statistics.

https://monmouthhawks.com/news/2021/12/ ... fstra.aspx is Monmouth's preview. They are 10-2 in Division I for the first time. They have outrebounded ten of twelve teams. They are sixth of 358 teams with an .806 free throw percentage. Their seven road wins lead and are two higher than the next highest teams. All four of their double-digit scorers are fifth year seniors. George Pappas made nine threes against us last season. They won their last nine home games. They lead the all-time series 6-5 with one more point 815-814, which is 74.1-74.0 per game.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... ofstra.pdf is Monmouth's Game Notes, which are only 14 pages, and ours are 39 pages. They play great defense allowing 66.0 points, .387 field goal percentage, and .295 three-point field goal percentage. Their roster has 17 players, with 7 from New Jersey, 4 from New York, and 1 from Tennessee, North Carolina, Illinois, Virginia, Canada, and Slovenia.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... /_/id/2405 is Monmouth's statistics. They have only eight regulars, and their player with the fifth most minutes has over double their player with the sixth most minutes. Their five most used players played 77.3 percent of their minutes, which is higher than our 74.9 percent, albeit ours would be higher if Iyiola was available every game.

ESPN3 is only available in the United States. They have a link to an International Stream. I wonder how many people in all other countries combined will watch.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=369809 will have statistics.

Arkansas was a big opportunity… this one is a big game

HU can show the Hog win was no fluke - taking down MU on the road this year with their early outlook would be super win - important game here, this is the kind of top tier mid major matchup that HU needs to come out on top of - whoever wins this will gain a LOT of mid and regional attention

Let’s go fellas, ROLL PRIDE!!!

The statistics at http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=369809 have an ad at the bottom, which they didn't use to have. If StatBroadcast has an ad at the bottom for every games, I'll be annoyed, but I'll have to deal with it.

Jerry Beach hasn't written his preview yet. I want to know if beating Arkansas 89-81 was a unicorn score (the first time we won by that score) or the previous time we won 89-81, and reading his preview is quicker than looking through our Guide for the scores of every game.

Edit: It was our sixth consecutive unicorn score.

The CAA went 2-1 this afternoon. UNCW won 65-58 hosting Campbell, William & Mary lost 88-66 at Valparaiso to fall to 0-12 vs. Division I, and Towson won 69-52 at Navy. UNCW easily beat the spread where they were underdog by 4.5, and Towson easily beat the spread where they were favored by 1.5. Valparaiso covered their 15.5 point spread. At the same time as us, Charleston is underdog by 3.5 at Old Dominion.

Edit: http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2021 ... mouth.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Hofstra at Monmouth." Jerry's season standings that give players 3, 2, and 1 from each game have Dubar leading with 18, and if that was done for every team I think it would be unusal for a team's fourth leading scorer to lead in that. Estrada has 15, Cooks has 13, Ray has 11, Iyiola has 6, Silverio has 5, and Cramer has 4. It adds up to 72, which is 12 games*(3+2+1 per game). It says "The win on Saturday also marked the first time a CAA school beat a school ranked in the AP top 25 since Nov. 27, 2015, when Northeastern beat no. 15 Miami (FL), 78-77." Cooks, Estrada, and Dubar have had at least 3 steals in a game, and it's the first season we had three players do that since Charles Jenkins, Brad Kelleher, and Dwan McMillan in 2010-2011. KenPom expects us to lose 72-67.

https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/ ... 957b7efd8/ will have video.

That's what we expect without Cooks. The statistics still haven't posted the starters.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jerrybeach ... 4981422896 says that after Hofstra's flight to Arkansas was canceled, Arkansas paid Hofstra half the cost of a charter flight because they wanted to ensure that Hofstra didn't cancel. I wonder if they wish it was canceled.
