Hard to believe this team gets trounced by Stony Brook and then goes on the road without their leading scorer and beats a nationally ranked team. Did not expect this at all. When the Razorbacks cut it to 2 I thought here we go again but the team finally learned how to close a big one out. Avoided costly turnovers and hit all of their free throws down the stretch. Spectacular performance. Congrats to Speedy on his first signature win! Hopefully Cooks is OK and we get on a roll heading into conference play.

No one got to see it unfortunately. Estrada comes within 2 assists of a triple double and a huge game for Iyiola against his former team. Speedy beats one of his former NBA coaches, congrats to him and the staff. Nice to finally close one out. Hofstra is also trending on twitter which is pretty cool.

We hit our free throws at the end and lucky we did. Seems like Arkansas hit a three every time they had the ball in the last minute.

I should ask for big wins more often!

This is why those other games Vs Top 25s in Houston and Maryland mattered. While many here were so down on the the team after coming up short in those games, I think those losses prepared the team well for what it did tonight. UCLA wasn't ranked. This is bigger.

Speedy knew exactly what he was doing with this OOC schedule. Watch out, CAA.

team came out with a fire in their belly and played a full 40 minutes. Just like SBU coming off that bad loss to Wagner we came off that bad loss to SBU and took it out on Arkansas

Hofstra won 89-81. Each team scored 49 in the second half. Estrada became the fifth player this season to have at least 22 points, at least 10 rebounds, and at least 8 assists. He became the first CAA player to do that since Drexel's James Butler against us on February 20, 2020. He shot 7-12 and free throws 8-8. Ray shot 7-13 including 3-5 twos and 4-8 threes. He entered the game shooting threes over twice as well as twos, .457 to .222. He made 6 of 27 twos before today, and raised his percentage shooting twos to .282. He made all 4 free throws. Other than shots has his plus/minus of +8, all of his statistics were 2 or lower. Iyiola had 18 points (50 percent above his previous season-high of 12) and 14 rebounds (tied with the previous game for his season-high). He made 7 of 11 field goals and 4 of 6 free throws, which were his first free throw attempts since 2018-2019. Dubar shot 5-13 and was below his averages with 11 points and 5 rebounds. He had 5 steals, which exceeded his previous career-high of 3, and limited mistakes with no fouls and 1 turnover. Silverio shot 2-9 and scored 7. After being fouled in the act of shooting a three, he made the last two free throws. He had 5 rebounds. Carlos had 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists, which is good for 16 minutes, and led us in plus/minus at +9. However, he shot 1-4 and committed 3 turnovers. Burgess made a three, which was his only shot in 5 minutes, and had 1 steal and 1 turnover. It was the second time in four games that he did not have an assist. Cramer had 2 points by shooting 1-2, 1 rebound, and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He's not going to play much if Iyiola keeps playing well, although I would be fine with having them play together for 5 to 10 minutes.

Here are team statistics. We led for 35:46, were tied for 3:31, and trailed for 0:43. Our largest lead was 14, and Arkansas' largest lead was 3. Mid-majors could be expected to struggle scoring inside, get fewer rebounds, and commit more fouls against majors, but those didn't happen. We didn't shoot threes well, but we didn't need to. We attempted only 8 threes in the second half, and made 2. 22 of our 65 attempts were threes, which is our lowest percent of attempts that were threes this season. We had a higher field goal percentage .477 to .446, shot twos better .585 to .500, shot threes worse .387 to .318, and shot free throws better .870 to .846. We had fewer turnovers 15 to 11 and way more points off turnovers 22 to 10. We had more rebounds 40 to 33. We had more second chance points 8 to 6. Arkansas had more bench points 48 to 9. They had bench players score 20, 19, and 9, and their highest scoring starters were tied with 9. We had more points in the paint 44 to 26. Arkansas had more fast break points 27 to 11, and I'm surprised that a team can have 10 points off turnovers, fewer rebounds, and 27 fast break points. Arkansas had the only 5 blocks. We had more steals 9 to 7. Each team had 17 assists, and we had a higher assist/turnover ratio because we had 11 turnovers to their 15.

Arkansas had three players foul out. It was the seventh time from 2010-2011 to now that at least three teammates fouled out against us. A majority (15 of 29) of the fouls committed by the teams combined were committed by players who fouled out, and I wish I could find out how rare that is. Before today, 15 of the 309 fouls in our games were committed by players who fouled out, with two foul outs by us and one by Detroit Mercy.

The announcer don't know Iyiola has the Y pronounced like a Z. Arkansas missed a shot, and the announcer said Arkansas missed a tip after that, but the tip didn't happen in the play-by-play.

Here are how our player statistics changed:

Ray: 13.8 to 14.6 points, 4.4 to 4.1 rebounds, 3.56 to exactly 3.6 threes made

Estrada: 13.0 to 13.8 points, 5.4 to 5.8 rebounds, 5.1 to 5.3 assists, .923 to .952 free throw percentage

Dubar: 13.5 to 13.3 points, 6.1 to 6.0 rebounds, 1.3 to 1.6 steals, 1.2 to 1.1 blocks

Silverio: 12.2 to 11.8 points, .433 to .416 field goal percentage, .400 to .388 three-point field goal percentage, 3.2 to 3.3 rebounds

Iyiola: 7.1 to 8.5 points, 7.3 to 8.1 rebounds, .758 to .727 field goal percentage (needs to play four more games to qualify for statistics, would be fourth in the CAA in rebounds if he qualified)

Cramer: 6.9 to 6.4 points, 4.2 to 3.9 rebounds, exactly 1 to 0.9 blocks

Carlos: 1.2 to 1.6 points, 0.8 to 1.1 rebounds, 1.67 to 1.71 assists, 0.7 to exactly 1 turnover

Burgess: 0.7 to 0.9 points, 3.2 to 2.9 assists (so he won't qualify for assist/turnover ratio leaders that require 3 assists)

Here are how our team statistics changed:

Points: 79.5 to 80.3
Field goal percentage: .4794 to .4792/Opponents' field goal percentage: .437 to .438 (it's hard to have both of them change so little)
Free throw percentage: .728 to .752
Rebounding margin: exactly -3 to -2.2
Fouls: 13.7 to 13.3
Opponents' fouls: 14.4 to 14.8

Cooks is the only CAA player averaging at least 15 points. If he misses the next three games, he will stop qualifying. Ray (1.46), Dylan Painter (14.5), and James Butler (14.5) could increase their averages to 15+. Last season the CAA had ten players average over 15 points.

Hofstra vs Arkansas 12/18 Saturday

Post by dutchalum01 »

How good is this team? Pretty f’ing good. Had we went 2-1 against 3 top 25 teams, we’d be getting some serious national attention. We could be 3-0 but come out 1-2, which I’ll take all day. Speedy knows what he’s doing, and will continue to build this program. Guy is a winner, and will tolerate nothing less than. Cannot wait to see us play conference. GREAT to see the young guard get real minutes too. Bring on the recruits. This will def help - mark my word.

Super, big time win! That’s a helluva bounce back after the SBU debacle - ranked SEC team on the road, yep take that all day every day

I called this one awhile ago as their chance to still do something noteworthy - felt like the matchup was conducive, even despite the SBU loss - did not expect to do so without Cooks though

Very impressive, a win to be very proud of, for them of course and us all!

We’ve seen the vest and the worst of this team, they need to pull it all together and become a true TEAM - still haven’t seen that yet - sky is the limit if they can

Way to go fellas, you repped HU right tonight - enjoy it!

A very big tough test coming up against Monmouth - this team has already beaten a few but named this year and Rothstein tweeted recently they could be attractive to the A10 at some point - THATS the attention and promo that HOFSTRA needs - here’s their chance to take it with a back to back big W

Great to see the big man making an impact. As good as Kante was, Bay, who can run the floor, seems a better fit for Speedy's style.

Yes was watching the Colts beat the Patriots but this win is huge for a lot of aforementioned reasons. We shot 20-23 from the charity stripe big time. If we were mediocre from there this game might not of been in the win column. So we beat Arkansas without Cooks and almost beat Houston without Ray. Think about it for one moment that Speedy had the confidence to play Carlos against this team on the road and said in the post presser that he handled the ball better then any of our other guards. With all the experience of Burgess you would have thought he would get more of the minutes. Hopefully we can get some video of this game because a lot of us would like to see it. I listened to the coach of Arkansas criticize the play of his players and talked about us out rebounding them, out hustling his team but the one thing I thought he should of said hey yeah we lost but we lost to a GOOD TEAM. I was waiting for that but it didn't happen.

Ray moved up to second in the CAA in points per game. The CAA has statistics going back to 2005-2006, and a team never finished with the top two scorers in that time.

In typical local rag NEWSDAY fashion….
No Mention of our Big W against Top Ranked Arkansas…
But they squeezed in SB “big” win against St Peter’s and St J loss to Pitt….
As always thanks for nothin’ Newsday.

Who needs Newsday, when we’re all over other media sources and social media? We’ve gotten shoutouts from ESPN, the NCAA, amongst others.

Not to mention this Instagram story post from Chris Paul

Amazing win and arguably best regular season victory in program history given it was first time beating a top 25 AP program since 1976-77 season against #18 Southern Illinois. We also had ranked wins against Richmond last year and George Mason in 06, but neither was ranked in AP poll at time and that is poll most recognized.

I wonder if Musselman would've given Speedy such a good review on Iyiola if he knew Iyiola would have such a good game in helping Speedy's team upset Musselman's months later. Lol
