MBB Game 3 - GWU, 11/14/22, 7 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

GWU (2-0) has defeated Virginia State and Howard, but we shouldn't take the Colonels lightly. They have five players averaging in double figures, including a transfer from K-State who can score in bunches:

SI projects GWU as middle of the A10 pack, well behind #5 UMass and #6 GMU:

I know someone who is a GW grad and big fan of GW hoops, so I need this one to get bragging right back, especially after that OT NIT loss a few years back.

So Virginia state is a D2 school?? We’re coming in with a lot more impressive 2-0 record than GWU. I like us going 3-0 here.

With a 150.5 O/U, so an expected 79-71 win. They love that kind of O/U in HU games this year - 151 in each of the first two and 150.5 in this one.

Charleston also at home for an A-10 team at the same time, as a 3 1/2-point underdog to Richmond.

I hope we get to see Barrouk, Marshall and Tomasco on the court tonight. Maybe even Best and Galgano will get a few minutes.

We classically play down to our opponents and expectations in games like these. I'm looking to see Speedy get this team up and ready to win this one decisively.

Is GW this bad?

I dont know them well, but people are talking about them like they are D2 and not in the A-10.

Last season they were 12-18, 3-10 away, 226th in the NET, and 0-8 vs. Quadrants 1 and 2. A neutral site win over Wright State was the only above .500 team they beat. The best NET team they beat was a 77-76 win hosting George Mason, who was 114th. Against the NET's Top 100, they were 0-8 with a point differential per game of -16.75. At home, they beat NET 331st St. Francis (PA) by 3, and needed triple overtime to beat NET 278th Duquesne. Their SOS of 157th was bad for a team in a good conference.

I was just wondering as to why their are no WB Mason coaches reports anymore. Steven Gorchov used to host these interviews with the Coaches for most of Hofstra's sports. Speedy was a regular during the basketball season. They were well presented, informative and insightful. Also, they were in addition to the post game interviews. Anyone have any answers?

Don’t be over confident may need to go with our starters the whole game. Not a big believer in large spreads.

It’s all about matchups George Washington may present some front court problems for us which will keep them in the game so I expect it to be a very tight game with us pulling away in the last two minutes as we scored most of our points from the free throw line

http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2022 ... ngton.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: George Washington." The 83-78 win over Iona was a unicorn score, meaning the first time we won by that score. Nelson Boachie-Yiadom became our first 5 to have at least 4 assists since Jacquil Taylor on February 23, 2019, when we blew Justin Wright-Foreman's (and Taylor's, Dan Dwyer's, and Kenny Wormley's) Senior Day and lost to James Madison 104-99 in overtime. Estrada had his seventh game with at least 10 points, at least 6 rebounds, and at least 6 assists. He has the second most such games by a Hofstra player from 2010-2011 to now, which is how far back the Sports-Reference College Basketball Play Index goes. Juan'ya Green did that 11 times for us. I wonder how many times Charles Jenkins did it, as the Play Index only includes his senior season.

George Washington was picked 12th of 15 in the Atlantic 10. KenPom expects us to win 79-70. George Washington's Coach Chris Caputo was an assistant for George Mason when we beat them twice and they went to the 2006 Final Four.

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=425815 will have statistics.

Estrada putting on a show, scoring in a variety of ways. 23 first-half points on 9/11 fg, 4/5 from 3.

41-33, Hofstra at the final MTO of the half.

GW hanging around which always worries me in Hofstra hoops games. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with our three bigs and when they will return?
Estrada putting on a show. Guess the GW staff did not watch the Iona tape...LOL!

Edit...this is the first time we are out rebounding our opponent.

Feel like the team may have underrated GW too.

Played well enough to win. Estrada was Estrada. Dubar and Thomas had nice showings. ROW comes off the bench and drains a 3 immediately-Kid is playing well and has confidence. German had some nice plays. Wish I knew what was up with our bigs. We’re gonna need to get some floor time for them before conference. Crickets on that front.

RE our bigs - One thing I did notice tonight was that WW was on the floor warming up pre-game with the team. Last game he kept his warm-ups on and never ventured onto the court. I guess its a good sign that he is up and about now - maybe on the mend?? Dunno!

And how about the kid named Bishop on GW - kid had 44 pts tonight.

Played well enough to win, but should have won this game by 10-15 points. Estrada was a walking bucket tonight. Carlos was a big loss when he picked up his fourth foul. He distributed the ball extremely well tonight. NBY has to play tougher. Has to go up strong. Huge tip out on the missed FT, but just needs to be tougher IMO. Great news to hear Warren warming up. Would love to see him on the court for our West Coast swing.

Pumped to be 3-0.
